smells like CCP money all around the agitators.

The King could step up and offer to discuss the issues with these students as well! If his rule is sacrosanct, the civilian government would have to listen! But then again, he doesnt want to lose any money or power, so, nothing will change

What’s missing in most of the reporting on this issue is how deeply reviled the current king is. Most Thais respected the former king, but not this one. Everyone knows what a corrupt and heinous person the current king is, but most do not dare say so in public.

The current protests are partly in response to this king’s abuse of power.

Plaques are easier to remove than the murderous Thai military which has always blocked the road to democracy like in countless other countries around the world where people live in thrall to an ugly, parasitical ruling class presiding over their heartless "Hunger Games".

Alas, the current king prefers to frolick with his harem and toy poodle in the luxury hotel in Bavaria that is renting completely. Before the old king died, there were suggestions to bypass this one and make his sister (who is well respected) queen. Alas, the government did not opt for that.

No, its the opposite. The "agitators" want a path to democracy and freedom, free of the despotic military dictatorship with a scandal-plagued absent "King" as figurehead.

I stand with the democracy and freedom-loving Thai protesters. Down with the illegitimate, tyrannical Thai regime!

Fighto: "No, its the opposite. The "agitators" want a path to democracy and freedom, free of the despotic military dictatorship with a scandal-plagued absent "King" as figurehead."

Yeah, because Democracies are working so well these days. You have the US, where a man is doing everything in his power to shut down free and fair elections, and his attorney general who has flat out said he supported an autocracy. You have Japan, where the ruling block made it illegal to have fair representation in rural areas so that only THEY can field candidates, and who have started giving themselves extra terms of power, and "elect" cronies who have waited their turn and not angered the person in power at the time.

Not too many so-called democracies working well these days, friend.

"Down with the illegitimate, tyrannical Thai regime!"

What's illegitimate about it? I'm no fan of the king or kingdoms in general, but it's not in any way illegitimate.

Quite the opposite. The Thai military is strongly aligned with China and buys much of their hardware from the Chinese now.

The hierarchical domination of a People is maintained by the basic rule of all such hierarchies, 'Disobedience is Death' which is understood intuitively by all in such a social structure. That ALL Human social structures are so is what makes life on Earth so difficult for people who would prefer to determine their own fates in this 'one short ride only' life. That is not profitable to the dominating AUTHORITIES and they resist such thinking and their enforcers resist such behavior. True 'democracy' or, as a guy named Lincoln put it (paraphrasing) "Of, by, and FOR the People" is a yet to be re-attained goal by any Human identity group on the planet since we lost it circa 70K years ago. And all governments have 'deep states' running them and they are all what every hierarchy has, 'the elite'. We are not a complicated species, really, it's just all of the obfuscatory noise we make at each other when trying to see clearly our own pathology and do something about it against the wishes of those who feel they own us and that it is our duty to be parasitized by them and support them and their excesses with our labor and sacrifice without complaint. All of recorded Human history is largely just this: Parasitic dominance versus rational sharing and co-operation. Slave versus Master. We will not change, ever. When we try, all we do is change the names of the dominating parasites. sigh.

@Desert Tortoise that makes perfect sense. I mean, what authoritarian regime that oppresses people like this does NOT support?

What is it like having a military government?

It is difficult to imagine having soldiers on the streets or at the airport or on the sidewalks telling people what they cannot and can do.

This is Thailand today...

What's illegitimate about it?

A military coup is not legitimate in a constitutional monarchy.

A monarch who appropriates state funds designated as public for his own pleasure is not legitimate.

A government that assassinates political opponents and stuffs their corpses into barrels filled will concrete is not legitimate.

Though Thailand's version of authoritarianism is extreme, it shows what can happen when one person leading a nation is given utmost power. Properly functioning democracies can limit the nastiness that comes along with authoritarianism.

And America come November.
