This is the perfect chance for Poland and Bulgaria to start cutting off their dependence on Russian gas and oil.

The weather is warming up and buy next winter they should be able to find new sources.

Buying Russian oil and gas is NO different than supporting Terrorism.

Gas is just one of the problems they'll be facing.

There's plenty of resources in Russia that they and many parts of the world depend on.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Better to wean yourself off of dependence on Russia sooner rather than later

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Oops, didn't someone tell Europe not to rely on Russian fuel, now who was that?

Poland could be self sufficient with a nuclear power plant. In today's day and age, the technology is reliable and safe.

Poland’s climate minister has announced that Poland will start building its first nuclear power plant in 2026, with a capacity of 1.0-1.5 gigawatts. The facility is expected to come online by 2033.

Rodney, why do you seem so predisposed to Russia? It seems like you have a blind spot for their atrocities and other lesser deficiencies. Why is that? The Putin regime and the Oligarchs are not good people.

@TheAvenger, re nuclear, 'the technology is reliable and safe'.

This assumes that humanity is responsible and the world will always be at peace. Unfortunately as events at Chernobyl and other nuclear plants in Ukraine have shown, they can become pawns in a deadly game.

Buying Russian oil and gas is NO different than supporting Terrorism.

Russia possesses rich reserves of coal, oil, natural gas, iron ore, manganese, chromium, nickel, platinum, titanium, copper, tin, lead, tungsten, diamonds, phosphates, and gold, and the forests of Siberia contain an estimated 1/5 of the world's timber.

People need to get a better grasp of how their lives will be affected (for the worse).

So, where do you suggest we get all of this stuff from while you're out and about finding "new sources"?

I guess the world will have to go on supporting terrorism until the day when everything from Russia is resourced. That's if that day will ever come.

Time for a reality check.

Tom San - so Russia gets to do what they want because they have a wealth of natural resources?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Well they got what they deserved.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

mx16 - Are you upset with Bulgaria and Poland for rebuffing Russia?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Like it or not, our civilisation and our global economy depends upon reliable, globalised interdependence. Any alternative guarantees shortages, economic collapse, rampant inflation, poverty, famine, political destabilisation and escalating military conflict. Our politicians appear to have chosen the alternative. If you ever wondered how civilisations end - Greece, Rome etc - you are now watching it happen around you.

Tom San - so Russia gets to do what they want because they have a wealth of natural resources?

If you have to revert to an oversimplified question, you wouldn't understand.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

GBR48 - I agree with you, and that is why it is so crucial for countries to stand united against those who would disrupt the social order and invade other countries.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Thanks for your response, Tom San. So, is your answer yes or no? humor me!

Up until now, the true costs of the sanctions to the sanctioners have been theoretical or downplayed or hidden in the inflation numbers.

Now it's going to be somewhat visible. Yes, in the short term, the shortfall in gas can be made up in the short term by borrowing from the future, but because of previous problems, the European public knows how much gas has to be flowing into storage during the 'off season' to have any chance of avoiding rationing and shortfalls when the demand exceeds the capacity to pump in new gas during the winter.

So, unlike in the US, the European public won't be ignoring the problems borrowing from the future creates.

RichardPearce - Yes, Russia's war on Ukraine and the accompanying economic disruptions will have a real cost. I think it is important that we are honest with ourselves about this. It is not going to painless for anyone.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Bronco - that's an interesting assessment, but I am going to have to disagree that China and Russia are winning the "great game on the grand chessboard". People don't really want to live under autocracies. Do you see people clamoring to live in China, Russia, or KSA? More like the opposite, no?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Fair enough, Tom San. Ok, I will try to address what I believe is the point of your comment. Yes, the world is going to have to look for other sources/solutions for the Russian resources you mentioned. It is not going to be painless, as change is often difficult. The alternative is to treat resource-rich or nuclear armed nations with kid gloves. I would argue that this is not sustainable and that we have to do a better job of holding offending nations accountable, as we have failed to do so many times in the past.

The Ruble is at a 2 year high against the Euro

Well . . . This most recent ruble rally is in advance of international companies being required to make a record 3T ruble tax payments before the end of the week, and currency traders are taking advantage ahead of time. Forecasts are unclear past the end of the month, particularly ahead of BoR delivering a rate decision this Friday.

Russia suspending gas supplies to Poland, Bulgaria:

Be alert. Russia is walking its talk.

It has started to cut off its gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria, the unfolding of subsequent scenarios of that can be discomfiting.

What will be the reactions of the affected nations..?

What will be the reactions of the affected nations..?

Personally, I hope they stand fast against Russia, but I also acknowledge that I am not in their shoes. These kinds of things are for every country to decide for themselves.

Glenn Greenwald recently said

Whatever your views on the moral dimensions of this war, it's hard to deny this is the most dangerous moment in US foreign policy in two decades. Every week, US/NATO involvement in the war intensifies, as Russia explicitly warns of nuclear war. For what?"

Well he’s nobody so much in my book but it did remind that if he’s right, then the left and the Dems should be ashamed for putting feeble Biden in that seat.

it wasnt the dems that decided the election outcome it was the independents, they voted Biden not because they love him they just had enough of Trump BS

its simple.

you pay for gas-you get gas.

you dont pay for gas-you dont get gas.

as simple as is.

its called a market economy.russians dont need euros or usd for it as they want get paid in rubles and yes both Poland and Bulgaria knew that well.

now polish and bulgarian citizens be ready to pay for overpriced gas from somewhere else, pay cost of your "pride"...of vassalism?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

you pay for gas-you get gas.

you dont pay for gas-you dont get gas.

I think everyone understands this, Eastman.

If Poland and Bulgaria are going to be "vassals" to someone else, does that mean that they are currently "vassals" to Russia?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

you pay for gas-you get gas.

you dont pay for gas-you dont get gas.

You have a contract - you play by the rules,

You fail or change the contract - you are at fault!

Russia is blatantly and arrogantly abusing the whole world !

They have made very precise plan to whom to cut the gas first to put pressure on the next to come!

Poland is taking the biggest impact from Ukrainian refugees and contributing (together with Estonia) the most weaponry for Zeliensky.

And Bulgaria has the highest percentage of population actually on the side of Putin (in EU), thus putting their own government under big pressure.

Adding that Russian foreign minister is mentioning regularly 3rd world war and Putin already mentioned he would use atomic weapons what are you talking about here!!!

Arab countries are bad but Russia and it's supporters are danger for the universe!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If discussion between Poland and Russia cannot reach agreement on payment (through Ruble). Poland can pay by gold - it is acceptable to Russia.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I’m sure I should have clarified I was speaking of the nomination process not the general election.
