The weather is warming up and buy next winter they should be able to find new sources.

There's plenty of resources in Russia that they and many parts of the world depend on.

Russia possesses rich reserves of coal, oil, natural gas, iron ore, manganese, chromium, nickel, platinum, titanium, copper, tin, lead, tungsten, diamonds, phosphates, and gold, and the forests of Siberia contain an estimated 1/5 of the world's timber.

People need to get a better grasp of how their lives will be affected (for the worse).

So, where do you suggest we get all of this stuff from while you're out and about finding "new sources"?

Like it or not, our civilisation and our global economy depends upon reliable, globalised interdependence. Any alternative guarantees shortages, economic collapse, rampant inflation, poverty, famine, political destabilisation and escalating military conflict. Up until now, the true costs of the sanctions to the sanctioners have been theoretical or downplayed or hidden in the inflation numbers.

Now it's going to be somewhat visible. Yes, in the short term, the shortfall in gas can be made up in the short term by borrowing from the future, but because of previous problems, the European public knows how much gas has to be flowing into storage during the 'off season' to have any chance of avoiding rationing and shortfalls when the demand exceeds the capacity to pump in new gas during the winter.

So, unlike in the US, the European public won't be ignoring the problems borrowing from the future creates.

RichardPearce - Yes, Russia's war on Ukraine and the accompanying economic disruptions will have a real cost. I think it is important that we are honest with ourselves about this. It is not going to painless for anyone.

Fair enough, Tom San. Ok, I will try to address what I believe is the point of your comment. Yes, the world is going to have to look for other sources/solutions for the Russian resources you mentioned. It is not going to be painless, as change is often difficult. The alternative is to treat resource-rich or nuclear armed nations with kid gloves. I would argue that this is not sustainable and that we have to do a better job of holding offending nations accountable, as we have failed to do so many times in the past.

Personally, I hope they stand fast against Russia, but I also acknowledge that I am not in their shoes. These kinds of things are for every country to decide for themselves.
