'Pregnant man' gives birth to girl

A man who was born a woman before undergoing gender realignment surgery has given birth to a baby girl, U.S. media reported Thursday.

Thomas Beatie, who is legally male but decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy, attracted worldwide attention in April after revealing his pregnancy.

The 34-year-old gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Bend, Oregon, ABC News reported, without providing further details.

Beatie, who sports a beard, was dubbed the 'pregnant man' after appearing on Oprah Winfrey's television talkshow to discuss his pregnancy.

"I feel it's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human need. I'm a person and I have the right to have a biological child," Beatie told the chat show queen.

Beatie's unusual situation first became public when he wrote an article in the leading U.S. gay magazine The Advocate in March, entitled "Labor of Love."

"To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don't appear in the least unusual," he wrote, explaining that his wife was unable to have a child after undergoing a hysterectomy. So he chose to become pregnant by artificial insemination, he said.

"Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns," Beatie wrote, adding the couple had experienced opposition from health care professionals, friends and family.

One doctor refused to treat the couple, after consulting an ethics board.

"How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am," Beatie wrote.

The positioning of the "Laser Hair Removal Machines" ad (Ads by Google) immediately under this article was good for my first laugh of the morning!!

That, and "sexual realignment surgery." What is he, a car?!?!?!

'Pregnant man' gives birth to girl

Headline should read "Pregnant woman who underwent chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy gives birth to girl". But that's not gonna sell many papers.

Yeah, sexual realignment is as creepy as it gets. Other than that it's just another random homosexual.

Ok, if I'm right JT is confusing the story and leaving out a single important statement. Thomas Beatie was born a HERMAPHRODITE. Sexual re-alignment came afterwards.

Testosterone therapy during pregnancy can't be a good thing for the development of the fetus.

Thomas Beatie was born a HERMAPHRODITE" I don't know about that, perhaps she/he thought that was the case. I caught this story on 20/20 and the dude, when he was a girl, was pretty, even won some beauty contests.

Still, I don't know if I am comfortable with this recent science feat. 20/20 also had a segment on trans gender children, as young as six. What's the next step - wanting a boy when out pops a girl so you then decide to change it?

I'm happy to see an 'itty-bitty' bit of news shake up the serious homophobes on this site. Good for the person having the baby. If he/she wanted it, awesome, and all the power to them.

I think if shes having a baby, shes a woman. Regardless of sexual preference or cosmetic surgery. Ovaries=woman Testes=man....other than that, who cares if Mommy is Daddy and ...ummm well?

Looks like that guy had bad DNA and is in need of a mental realignment. When will this all stop? Pretty soon people are going to have their eggs implanted into dogs as a surrogate. I don't care if someone is gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual but can you imagine what being raised as a child in such a relationship would be like and how it would affect your own sexual orientation and personal realtionships.

smitty: This is not some itty bitty news. It is a miracle and leave it to you to start your childish taunting. Oh, and is this person a homosexual? She is after now a man legally and married to a woman.

Just because I am not down with the idea of changing yourself, medically or scientifically does not make one having a phobia of any kind. Just skeptical and/or concerned.
