demand urgent measures to stop environmental catastrophe.

Good on them! They're being left a planet long damaged by the fossils controlling fossil economies.

The whole point of this story is to draw conclusions from people otherwise there wouldn't be a comments section.

Should they instead be brainwashed into thinking that it makes more sense to believe the falsehoods spouted by an American politician ideology over the findings of scientists who have dedicated their lives to studying the matter?

I doubt these kids are stupid enough to fall for that brainwashing though. Only the stupidest of the stupid would choose the political ideology over the scientists

Thanks for posting the snippets of Greta's speech. Nice to read something informative in these comments. Also and impressive message, simply put.

Good for her. Still, I am of the opinion, that if there is any solution to global warming, it gonna be a technical one.

And these kids will have to live in the world that previous generations screwed up.

Don't be so hard on yourself. They will have their chance to screw up too.

arrestpaul - did you read my comments above?

She said - "I have not come to offer prepared remarks"

She said - "I am submitting this report as my testimony (IPCC special report)"

Please read the report.

Others who condemn her obviously have never had much to do with extremely bright, entusiastic kids who are wise beyond their years. I'd suggest getting out more into the schools, communities and interracting with some of them. You may well be very surprised.

It's so condescending to dismiss young people because of their age. As Zichi said Laura Dekker sailed solo round the world at 16. Musta been forced into it, coz what would she know?

Good for them.

Climate change is here, there's no denying it. And these kids will have to live in the world that previous generations screwed up. They have every right to be angry and demonstrate it.

All I hope now is that they will all follow through and start voting as soon as they can for their interests.

Today’s climate change demo’s in 150 countries are the biggest never.

A lot of single-use plastic bottles in those crowds.

It's easy to take the day off school and have a street party with all your friends. But it will amount to nothing, except perhaps more taxes on industries with larger carbon footprints. More money for the government, but will do little to reduce carbon emissions, if that's the concern.

And I notice none of these people ever talk about reducing the population, which would be the easiest and by far the most immediately effective approach to almost all environmental problems.

This bears repeating:

I doubt these kids are stupid enough to fall for that brainwashing though. Only the stupidest of the stupid would choose the political ideology over the scientists

Gee - lotsa people who believe they are informed concerning Greta Thunberg - but aren't.

Did any of you actually listen to her this week or any other time for that matter?

A snippet -

*"...Please save your praise, we don't want it. Don't invite us here to just tell us how inspiring we are without actually doing anything about it because it doesn't lead to anything..."*

*"If you want advice for what you should do, invite scientists, ask scientists for their expertise. We don't want to be heard. We want the science to be heard,"*

And her actual testimony -

"..Facing the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, in which young activists were invited to give their personal testimony on climate change, the 16-year-old gave a speech lasting only 50 seconds, submitting a scientific report instead.

*“I have not come to offer prepared remarks **at this hearing, I am instead attaching my testimony,"*

*

*“It is the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C [SR1.5] which was released on October 8, 2018.”*

*

*“I am submitting this report as my testimony because I don’t want you to listen to me.*

*

*“I want you to listen to the scientists.** And I want you to unite behind the science.*

*

“And then I want you to take action.”

Ms Thunberg said instead of listening to her and other teenagers, lawmakers should invite scientists to the Capitol to listen to their expertise on ways to slow a rise in global temperatures.

"This is not about us. This is not about youth activism,"

"We don't want to be heard.

"We want the science to be heard."

More common sense in one minute than years of ignorant waffle from many.

“Global warming, likely helped on by heat-trapping greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels has already led to droughts and heatwaves, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and floods, scientists say.”

There. Now I can accept this statement.

Feel sorry for Greta. She is obviously being used as a pawn by adults who are pushing their own agenda. Her parents are entertainer/celebrities in Sweden, she is hardly an average high schooler. It's a cynical tactic- using children as spokespeople for causes knowing that they cannot be vigorously criticised.

Her yachting odyssey is the same. A cheap PR stunt and nothing more. It would have been far more environmentally friendly if she had just flown on a scheduled airline. BUT...also far less 'virtuous'.

Campaigning on moral purity is a huge problem, as Greta is finding out. How will she get home? Use a stone headed axe and craft a personal dugout canoe from a tree?

I cannot accept this quote from the article at face value: “Global warming caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels has already led to droughts and heatwaves, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and floods, scientists say.”

Why do these students always have one of these protests on a Friday? Is it because they want to cruise into the weekend early?

These students are being brainwashed by their teachers.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Wonder how many of these kids' parents will be driving them in to the protests in gas-guzzling cars?

Now don't get me wrong - I'm all for sustainable energy sources like nuclear and perhaps thorium, as coal, gas and oil won't last forever - but these kids have been brainwashed if they think the world can dump fossil fuels and go "carbon-neutral" (whatever that really means) by 2030. And I recognise that the climate is changing - yet I'm highly skeptical that humans are the driving cause of it.

But all these doomsday predictions keep turning out wrong.

And the UN and alarmists have figured out that using a well-meaning but misguided teenager like Greta Thunberg is a great tactic, because they can get the borrowed peer credibility of using a teenager while being able to chastise skeptics who point out the flaws and hypocrisy of Thunberg's words and deeds as "picking on a child."

Yes, it's dirty, but for socialists the ends justifies the means. This is about politics and economics, not the climate.

According to UN official Christiana Figueres:

“This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model, for the first time in human history,” Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) said February 3rd during a press conference in Brussels.

It's about overthrowing market economies; climate change is just the vehicle.

And about Thunberg herself - she's a pawn in the game.

Thunberg, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in March, sailed to New York from England aboard a zero-carbon emissions vessel to partake in the UN summit.

The same boat, made significantly of carbon fibre - a material that takes a lot of energy to make and shape into a boat. I wonder how much renewable energy went into that? And the owners of the boat flew 6 crew over to NYC from Europe on a carbon-spewing jet airliner to sail it back once the propaganda work is done.

Some food for thought. I'm looking forward to all those downvotes from the JT's resident lefties.

I agree with Tangerine, this is borderline child abuse.

Doesn't anyone stop and think about the impossibility of making a carbon-free ocean voyage on a yacht made of CARBON FIBER? Eco-facsists aren't very good at introspection or self-awareness...

On Wednesday, Thunberg appeared before several committees of U.S. Congress to testify to the next generation's view on climate change. In lieu of testimony, she submitted a 2018 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that urged rapid, unprecedented changes in the way people live to keep temperatures from rising 1.5C by 2030.

Did Thunberg, or her handlers, provide any guidance on how mankind should be preparing to live in a hotter environment? Increasing the insulation level of homes, perhaps? Creating more efficient air conditioning, and installing it? Increasing the amount of energy, by any means possible, to meet the worlds increasing demand?

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

browny1 - did you read my comments above?

Has Thunberg, or her handlers, or the IPCC, provided any guidance on how mankind should be preparing to live in a hotter environment? You know, something that would actually prove useful in the future.

She went on a yacht, at least to America.

OK, she got me there. Now if DiCaprio and Gore would follow suit.

But that really drives home the point that what the environmentalists want is not practical and won't happen.

Last month we had 12 years to live, now apparently we only have 10 years left.

If that's the case then it's too late. We can't stop it now. Then again, in 1989 the UN said the world would be underwater by the year 2000. But the science is settled, right?

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

How did Thunberg get to the US? In a gas-guzzling airplane?

Practice what you preach, kids.
