The wide-ranging Cantonese culinary tastes are on display daily in Guangzhou, also known as Canton, in the Qing Ping Market. Shopkeepers sit behind cages full of writhing snakes, tubs with turtles and plastic basins with mounds of scorpions crawling over each other.

This market is very close to the US Consulate in Guangzhou which processes immigrant visas. More than one couple adopting a Chinese tot has wandered through this warren of alleys, no doubt with mounting unease over the prospect that cultural gap is much larger than they appreciated prior to arrival in the Middle Kingdom.

I remember the first time I went to the Qing Ping Market, one happy peddler insisted I take a photo of him chopping off a chicken's head. I obliged and then he thought I needed another, only reluctantly accepting my protestations that one was quite enough.

Well, they won't get my baby, a pampered pet.

China has no animal protection laws

Over the years I've had many a conversation about this with Chinese. They seemed surprised animals rights groups cared, for example, about live animals crowded in cages awaiting slaughter. In the days when Chinese shopped at open markets, it was common to see a chicken hung head down from bicycle handlebars to be plucked in the home of the purchaser who could be assured it was fresh.

Once you bring pets into your life you look at animals and their capacity to feel pain differently, even if they are destined for your dinner table. Vegetarianism remains rare in China; but many urban Chinese have become passionate pet-owners and this has transformed their thinking.

When possible, I've found it more productive to offer assistance, such as walking a neighbor's dog that was tied outside all day, rather than chastising them for keeping it that way.

I heard after you eat one of those neko burgers you develop a proclivity to chase around balls of yarn...

“Cats have a strong flavor. Dogs taste much better,..."

Actually cat tastes more like California Condor or Whooping Crane while Dogs tastes like sea turtle.

This story made me cry.

Can it really be true that people eat cats and dogs? I really can'T believe it i'm in shock!!

I only learnt recently that Japanese eat dolphins, oh my god and the Chinese eat pets. What is wrong with that part of the world?

Please stop doing these horrid practices, it is barbaric.

Protests in China over cats on the menu. What, are the protesters too lazy to just shoo them off?

Heh, wouldn't be eating one anytime soon mind, but I do like a bit of horse-meat, which tends to get the radical left shrieking at such a pitch only animals can hear it anyway....

Adverts,

Someone gave me a pillow which says "We gave away the kids because the cat was allergic." A more recent acquisition is a companion which reads "It's the cat's house, we just pay the mortgage." That kinda sums things up.

To eat one's Dog or Cat is to eat one' friend. But in a nation of over 1 billion no one is a friend. They are just the next meal!

Sad

I had a friend's teenage daughter come from China to stay with me. She quickly observed, "Your cat doesn't look like the ones in China." That's cause it's a pet. She quickly came to dote on her as well.

Two cat pelts = earmuffs

Four cat pelts = gloves or oven mitts.

It's funny that after the olympics we're still hearing this stuff. I figured we'd never hear another thing about petfood.

Twenty-four cat pelts = dinner jacket.

Forty-eight = winter jacket.

I've eaten dog but never cat. I likes the dog. < :-)

If you are poor and hungry you will eat what you can get. There's nothing special about cats, so tuck in. I'll give it a miss though.

My friend gave me a pillow once with a funny phrase on it. you can make a nice jacket from 24 cat pelts. My chinese freind thinks my cat looks different to Chinese ones.

Just thinking, wasn't cat a favorite food of the sitcom alien ALF (voice dubbed by Tokoro George on the japanese version)?
