I wouldn't believe a word Putin says, especially when he goes on about peace. He will never stop calculating how to expand Russia's borders.
siniestro
While USA does not care about expanding tis borders just the resources stolen from the other countries its fine.
natsukii
@siniestro typical misdirection away from the true problem. i'm sure you'd rather both russia and china go unchecked and continue to land grab any and everything they want.
Kaerimashita
My guess is that this is a bluff so that NATO don't discuss further action or sanctions. Once summit over then the conflict will escalate again (if it has ever really stopped).
stormcrow
Putin, the man with a plan.
Yeah, his plan.
Kazuaki Shimazaki
I won't be so sure. If at this point the Rebels hold "most of the separatist east", they've about grabbed as much land this round as possible. Putin probably doesn't even want the West half of the Ukraine if it was given to him - too much trouble with all those people.

Putin wants to putin the old soviet map in his map of russia.

Those two poor journalists beheaded by islamists also used to believe in Obama's promises.
Very strange because the day before Jen Psaki of U.S. Department of State said :

Another problem created by short-sighted policies of the EU and US.
They supported the toppling of a democratically elected Yanukovych leading to the alienation of the ethnic Russians giving Putin the opportunity to expand his own power base.
Iraq, Libya, Syria and now Ukraine, a fine mess we have.

The US wants Ukraine to join the IMF/EU/US 0.01% club. Putin didn't get an invitation because he actually wants his people to succeed, unlike the US/EU 0.01%'ers who want to print their wealth and leave the average people circling the toilet and get flushed.
They'd like to wrap this up before winter sets in.

For me it's a very strange point of view: land grabbing
on this land living people
one day Nazi on tanks coming there to enslave them and AFTER that produce some " reforms" ( may be)
these simple people taking arms to protect themselves and their relatives
They don't want enslave anybody
just destroy Nazi

The reports from NPR in the US are that the Russians are still fighting even as Putin says there is a cease fire. Putin is a lying dog.

Once again Putin is one step ahead of NATO, and especially Obama. Despite the fact that I personally detest the man and his politics, you have to give him credit for how he has out-played the West in this game of chess. In the end he will get most of what he wanted -- Crimea and some presence in Eastern Ukraine. Too bad all the people had to die, especially those shot out of the air on the Malaysian Airlines flight, so he could prove how macho he is.
praack
such a fail- Nato has declared that Ukraine is on it's own because they declared themselves Neutral - which they did when the cold war ended and they were asked to remove heavy weapons and nuclear weapons.
the US will not come to it;'s aid because of many factors- including the grounding of the space program- all satellites use Russian rockets to get into orbit, and of course the access to the space station.
they talk appeasement and have already drawn the line through eastern ukraine to start- but in reality the whole country will fall to russia shortly after
Olegek
Putin never said that he declare cease fire
Because Russia not take part in this civil war
Poroshenko should talk with South East leaders
he did not want

Even some Russian newspapers admit that Russian military sends soldiers to Ukraine.

Sanctions against Russia are a form of war. You effectively damage a country’s economy and their ability to function normally. They sometimes work against weak countries which have no means of fighting back. Any time Russia depend is so heavily on EU, they will have problems. So we have a choice: accept and do nothing about Putin’s empire building or call him out and take action to stop him. In either case, we will pay some kind of price. Containing never comes free. Russia is economically relatively weak today with $2.8 trillion economy, so the price of confrontation now will be manageable. Combined EU and U.S. alone has $30 trillion economy and if you include Japan's $5.5 trillion economy, you are dealing with economic leverage against Russia.

If the little piggies squeal at sanctions in Russia, the big piggies don't have to mind much.
It looks like a lot of long-term planning went into this. Russia was probably prepared to weather much worse sanctions than it got. Contingent plans prepared for any combination of sanctions, indirect military help from West, direct military help from West, and even after an aircraft was shot down only got a few sanctions, and a bunch of namecalling for which no contingency plans are needed.
Can even wonder if Russia started the recent Ukrainian revolution as a pretext, and everything since has been done according to their checklists.
But if they get to keep East Ukraine and Crimea, why NOT stop here, with peace talks? Running over Kiev would just give them a new set of headaches.

turbotsat Sep. 05, 2014 - 06:46AM JST and even after an aircraft was shot down only got a few sanctions,
U.S. and the west pointed an accusing finger at Russia without a shred of evidence. They have still not produced evidence to back claims Russia provided pro-Russian militias in Ukraine with a Buk missile battery that took down the Malaysian Airline.

What? Not even a shred?
Search images.google.com for mh17 shrapnel, those don't look like bullet holes.

Check back next week, the Netherlands' preliminary report on the incident is due out then. Final report expected before first anniversary of the crash.

Do you have some technical or military background to differ bullet holes from shrapnel holes? Various experts from various countries consider bullet holes.

Sorry WHO is Ukraine ? Mr Poroshenko ?
The land belongs to people who live on this land (of cause this idea dislike to a lot of USA citizens but this is so)
In Ukraine live different people
Not all of them support Mr Poroshenko
Lot of them struggle against him
1000 Russian tanks - quite enough to take Kiev in one week - maximum
Kazuaki Shimazaki
What happened to self-determination, zichi? And 1000 tanks for 9000 troops (what luxury!)? NATO's whoppers are getting bigger by the hour!
