in Russia, where many blamed him for the loss of the country's status as a global superpower.

In other words Gorbachev was not a warmonger like Putin, so Russian people and the Russian ruling caste did not admire him like they do Putin, Putin supposedly is second in popularity in Russia, trailing Stalin. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/06/21/putin-plummets-stalin-stays-on-top-in-russians-ranking-of-remarkable-historical-figures-poll-a74280 That says a lot about Russians and explains why they seem to accept the deaths of so many of their fellow citizens. Russian ultranationalism along with Putin's brand of national socialism, is the worst form of governance the globe has seen since the 1940's.Or at least since the demise of the USSR, which Putin is trying to replicate.

Good. It wouldn't be decent for a murderer and a crook like Putin to attend the funeral of a man of peace and intelligence like Gorbachev.

 scheduling issues

'Scheduling issues' my afterburners. Putin wouldn't be a wanted or welcome presence there anyway. It would be obnoxious, blasphemous and disrespectful for him to be there.

Peskov said that Putin had paid his last respects to Gorbachev at the hospital where he died on Tuesday, aged 91.

Russian state TV showed Putin placing a bouquet of red roses near Gorbachev's open casket in a big empty hall before pausing for a moment of silence.

Putin bowed his head, briefly laid his hand on the casket then made the sign of the cross.

Total propagandic crapola. The oldest trick in the book. Putin probably grabbed the roses afterward. Sign of the cross, yeah - since when is Putin even a Christian?

Remember when Sarah Palin prayer-posed in front of a stars-and-stripes billboard in 2008, looking idiotic as always? Remember when on the second day of the 1991 Gulf War where a videotape showed Saddam Hussein 'prostrating' on an Islamic prayer rug? He was no Muslim. Uh-uh.

This hypocritical pretense and showoffness just makes me want to throw up. I ain't buying it.

Nonsense, he’s the President or dictator…Czar…anyway, he can go if he wants to, he just chooses not to go

Why idiotic? There was nothing wrong what she did, now if you are just politically opposed to the woman then maybe…

Well, I doubt Putin is concerned with what his people think or the rest of the world when it comes to Gorbachev.

Putin, who called the Soviet collapse the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century, has spent much of his more than 20-year rule reversing parts of Gorbachev's legacy.

Yep. And this is the motivation for the imperialistic invasion of Ukraine.

Putin was a KGB agent in East Germany when Gorbachev opened up Russia to the west and liberated the eastern bloc countries. Putin suffered a deep sense of loss at that time and he has been trying to get back the old Soviet countries ever since.

And don't think he will stop at Ukraine if he isn't checked. Next will be Belarus (although he already has a puppet in that country), Lithuania, Moldova.

His hired lookalikes are busy too?

Hear! Hear!

Putin has been complicit in the oligarchical looting of the Soviet legacy.

Such as bringing a feudal economy before the October Revolution to becoming the Earth's first space-faring superpower .

I don't think that he's ever been invited and welcomed. Who is really a traitor for motherland Russia?

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Pettiness personified.

Even in death, Gorby shows Mimi-me for the small, petty coward that he really is. Putie is afraid to be seen and compared to a dead man.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Putin does not want to reveal his health condition to the west plus he hates Gorbachev and what he did to the Soviet Union.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Putin is a nobody compared to Gorbachev.

Too busy killing others and trying to survive.

I don't think that Gorbachev would want him there.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Great to hear Biden and Obama will be there. Trump couldn’t get a visa.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Not surprising....

Here's too busy writing letters to the parents of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine - that's a lot of letters...

And he's busy reading all that TS/SCI from Mar-A-Lago given to him by his BFF...

At one time, they was burying a Soviet leader every month after Brezhnev

Gorbachev was a disgrace!

Almost everyone has a reason to thank Gorby for opening up the Iron curtain and bringing freedom to millions of people. Personally, I also have to thank him so much. He could also have sent some tank divisions and mow down us all, but luckily he has not. And finally even that Putin guy would still be a lower KGB charge in pension now, if not Gorby had changed everything into freedom and democratic development so that also Putin and his cronies had the chance to get into power , corruption, undeserved wealth and so on. Yes, Putin hates Gorby most, but in fact he also profited most when looking at the aftermath.

Because of the fall of the Soviet Union, my grandfather's Baltic country was freed from occupation.

Donald Trump did the same kind of thing, as with McCain’s and Bush’s funerals. Of course the families didn’t want Trump there. Anyway, Putin & Trump are like brothers, or at least partners. The FBI should check Putin’s house for U.S. top secrets Trump stole.

Gorbachev was a disgrace!

every one of the former Soviet republics who are now enjoying freedom & democracy would disagree.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Putin is scared of being compared unfavorably to the map-of-Italy birthmark on Gorby's head.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Donald Trump did the same kind of thing, as with McCain’s and Bush’s funerals.

Yes. He and Putin are very similar tyrant types who abhor people and leaders who tried to be fair, or at least, weren't completely dictatorial in their ways.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Gorbachev.... now THERE is a leader that deserves a state funeral.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Anyway, Putin & Trump are like brothers, or at least partners.

more like 2 cheeks of the same backside

Democracy killed the Soviet Union

In the battle of ideas, multiparty liberal democracies beat out collectivist centrally-planned economies.

Gorbachev deserved a little credit was he was being similar to Richard Nixon, the only thing good he had done was bringing the Soviet troops out of Afghanistan in 1989, this was like NIXON'S retreat out of South Vietnam.

But the rest he had done was a disgrace.
