Racism targets Asian food, businesses in U.S. during COVID-19 pandemic

Racism in the US is institutionalized and legal. 

The American Left has been pushing a new form of racism since the 1960’s based in the Marxist inspired Critical Race Theory. Unless the Supreme Court ends this racist madness there isn’t much hope for American society.

Racism in the US is institutionalized and legal. Top US universities set a 20% ceiling for admission of Asian students, regardless of their grades or qualifications, and this policy has been declared legal by US courts. Asians dominate specialized high schools in New York City,v and this has been denounced as a "problem" by many politicians there. When Jews were similarly excluded from top universities beginning in the 1920's, this was called anti-Semitism.

There are some bad apples everywhere, and some incidents get highlighted by the free media of the US which creates the impression that racism is thriving.

Depends on what part of the US you're in and who you interact with. My personal experience with Americans, both there and abroad has been largely positive. I find Americans to be open, welcoming, educated and progressive (although, when it comes to the latter, they wouldn't always label themselves as that).

The ugly side have made headlines, of course, because it's shocking and terrifying to see marchers chanting "Jews will not replace us" and calling for antifascists to be murdered. Not to mention the bad, bad cops who are actually murdering black people.

Whenever I encounter a racist, there or abroad, it's always a shame to see them not just let down their country but also, themselves.

Unfortunately, the bigoted/xenephobic/nativist side of America will continue to be a thing for now - especially in the relative safety of online havens.

One thing that this article shows is that most people are concerned about racism only when they are at the receiving end.

Having lived for quite a few years in Singapore, I had felt subtle racism from ethnic Chinese Singaporeans on many occasions. However, the SG PAP government had made concerted efforts in the form of education and legislation to control racism in the interests of social stability. So one could never see overt racism on the streets or in the open.

My friends and relatives living in the US who are now American citizens say that most Americans are very open minded and accepting of other cultures. US is a cultural melting pot. There are some bad apples everywhere, and some incidents get highlighted by the free media of the US which creates the impression that racism is thriving.

In fact, the police and white police have an entire movement dedicated to eliminating them and even “frying them like bacon”.

More misinformation.

Defunding the police to put more resources into communities is not about elimination of the forces. Weeding out inherent racism and being proactive, rather than reactive is a good thing.

Let’s not forget that these bigoted events are occurring in Democrat controlled cities for the most part.

I think we all know that Democrat controlled cities is code.

Calling the virus after its location of origin is how it usually works. That’s not racism - it’s science. From the Spanish flu to Ebola (named for a river in Africa) - viruses are always named for the place of origin.

The information quickly got distorted in the U.S., spurring racist memes on social media that portrayed Chinese people as bat eaters responsible for spreading the virus, and reviving century-old tropes about Asian food being dirty. Fueling the fire, President Donald Trump repeatedly referred to COVID-19 as “the China virus.”

Not just the US where the info was distorted and racist propaganda was spread. One has only to glance online here in Japan and wherever the far right congregate to read such filth.

Education, honesty and obviously less reliance on poorly treated animals ("exotic" and all) is needed.

I don’t know about rats, but Chinese do eat bat and dog.

This article stretches mightily to make a big deal over the covid virus and anti-Asian bigotry. First off, the virus originated in Wuhan China. Calling the virus after its location of origin is how it usually works. That’s not racism - it’s science. The nearly meaningless stat of 26% decline in small businesses is not much above the average and is likely due to the disproportionate concentration in cities that are more likely to be shutdown by Progressive politicians.

And yes, there are fools that will use an unfortunate event to denigrate others but is that any different from the denigrations the police have been subjected to this Summer. Ironic that an article about bigotry is filled with comments that express bigotry toward Americans and white people.

Nothing wrong with calling out China for prioritizing sanitizing information over containment of covid. China doubled down on their sins by hoovering up PPE in other countries whilst there was critical shortage. Then China took advantage of global weakness to further its control agenda. Wrong!

But two wrongs do not make a right. Asian Americans are probably more affected by the virus than other Americans, some of whom (like those from Guandong, or HK flee to America to escape CCP persecution in the first place, they need support and protection. Unify America, not sow division and hatred.

The same with Japan, those nationalists boycotting Chinese restaurant that has been operating for 3 generations by Chinese immigrants some with adopted Japanese names? WTF. And the treatment of Koreans....

It's everywhere, it's evil, and I hope 2021 will be a new beginning, where we take care of one another rather than hating one another.

There wouldn't be a Silicon Valley without Asians, so go ahead American geniuses, make life intolerable for the most productive people in your country, lose them, and wallow in your own filth.

Would not even be surprised if in today's US if the next debate was: Are lynching's really such a bad thing?

I know of one prominent American (who has recently been signing execution orders for black people while pardoning white rich friends) would probably hail a return as an important part of American history.

Nothing new in the USA. MAGA-man must be happy, back to the gold ol' days,

America's is a sick, toxic "culture" that should be avoided all costs.

As the coronavirus spread throughout the U.S., bigotry toward Asian Americans was not far behind, fueled by the news that COVID-19 first appeared in China.

Racism has plagued the US since its inception. The current anti-Asian ugliness has to be understood as a dynamic. One of the elements is a 'leader' who has called Covid 'China flu', 'kung flu' among others, blaming China (probably deservedly) while adding another racist term his white nationalist base can parrot.
