I'm not usually one for symbolism, but the image of the Confederate flag flying at full-staff (like a huge middle-finger to common decency) while all the others are lowered pretty much encapsulates my thoughts on the fair state of South Carolina.

While some whites consider the Civil War-era flag an emblem of Southern regional pride and heritage

It's a shame that they can't seem to find a way to celebrate their history and heritage in a way that doesn't include symbols used by those who who murdered blacks.

The flag reminds me of The Dukes of Hazzard.

“I hereby nominate this man [Roof] for the 2015 Nobel peace prize,” one poster said. “More power to the guy. Just imagine the situation if all white men were like this. We would have eternal peace.”

Post pulled from a white racist website after the massacre. Roof is not alone in his racist views in the USA.

After billions spent, the U.S. still cannot prevent domestic terrorism.

I agree.

There is too much racism in the world which is sad, NOT ONLY in the US.

Very true, but if the US is truly an advanced nation, they would get rid of the Confederate flag once and for all, and NOW. Otherwise the comment that "it happens elsewhere" is just a justification for not wanting change.

No, but in the US, you have a developed nation, that has institutionalized racism, with a staunch opposition to even recognizing its existence, combined with a lot of guns. It's like a perfect storm.

Or rather an imperfect storm.

In San Francisco, Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton called for tougher gun laws in the United States in the wake of the tragedy.

Bill Clinton tried for tougher gun laws. Obama tried again. It still going nowhere. South Africa and Australia had gut to went ahead for tougher gun laws despite the strong opposition. Civic society does not need to please individual person interest. Individuals are part of society and they have to surrender their narrow interest for safety, law and order and well being of society.

where the Confederate flag has been a focal point for controversy for years.

According North and South TV series of US, Southern states did not want to abolish the slavery culture of African people. That mentality still exist among some US residents until now. North under President Abraham Lincoln was touched enough to liberate African black people from being as slaves.

North waged the war with South. North won the war. South surrendered. Confederate flag was a symbol of racism, ideology of white supremacy and disunity of federation. It should be ripped off since after the end of civil war.

The problem of today USA is no President was or will be touch enough to wage the another civil war with trigger happy extremists, ideologists and racists.

Will Hilary or Jeb or Donald will become the another Abraham Lincoln of USA? He or She may follow the cruel fate of Lincoln. However he or she will be martyred as reformist of never ending gun massacre of US of the A.

United States needs another Lincoln for completely wiping out the racial hatred, intolerance and disunity.

I'm not quite sure about it. Wearing the flag or acknowledging it doesn't mean that you are a racist or embrace racism. I'm so tired of all this PC nonsense. Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Mayer were both correct, we have run amok with over playing the race card, the grievance industry headed by Al Sharpton looking to exploited anything he can tie racism to. Yea, I'm not a big fan of the confederate flag, but instead of getting rid of it, we should learn from its past and history to make sure we never go back to that horrible moment time back in the US. People need to stop being overly sensitive. What's next, they will close down the confederate Museum as well??

And you have the same thing in Europe as well, minus the guns and please don't tell, I lived over 20 years in Europe, I've seen more than my share of violence. I don't think it's any better. How did Theo Van Gogh die again?

Dylann Roof's quite clearly mentally deranged. Even the racists across America think Roof's nuts. If it wasn't racism that pushed Roof over the cliff, it would have been some other issue. His lawyer is more than likely planning a guilt by reason of insanity defense.

So, it should be okay to wear swastikas in the street or put them up in front of houses or privately owned businesses and justify it as a history teaching tool? How about a picture of Osama Bin Laden hung in the front of history classrooms so that people keep in mind how evil humans can be sometimes? would parents or others be 'overly sensitive' if they complained that it is absolutely wrong to display such things? and please don't say they are different, because you said yourself the confederate flag is something we should learn from.

The conferate flag is an insult to all Americans.

I very much agree with this sentiment. The Confederate battle flag is the wrong symbol to associate with the very good and decent aspects of southern heritage. The Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. The Republican party was formed in the decade before the war in opposition to slavery. The Democrat party subsequently used Jim Crowe, the KKK, and segregation to continue the war and the battle flag was eventually resurrected to represent that fight.

Of course Southern Democrats also tried to associate the American flag with segregation as well. A picture has surfaced with Roof burning the American flag - it is apparent that that effort has failed. Conservatives are repulsed by this misappropriation of the one symbol that unites all Americans.

@Strangerland

Right, the one form of institutional racism that remains in America is affirmative action. Roof has very little real understanding of the history of race in America. However, he sees that America has laws that specifically state that the rights of some people are greater than those like him. That creates this "perfect storm" of grievance that this man holds inside of him. Until America can stop dividing it's people by race, America will never get beyond race. This view of the world through a racial lens is the continued shame of the Democrat party. It gets them votes, but it poisons society to no ones benefit.
