Read the article carefully, paolo. Please note you had to use the phrase if they were instead of they are. Figure it out. It would be nice if they were just plain anti-war, but they're rather selective about which side should be anti-war. Not all muslims are out to get us, but at the same time not all muslims are out for supporting others outside of their Nation of Islam either. The ones persecuting others based on religious beliefs are not the non islamic crowd. The only time when Islam as a religion became widely known was hardly 9 years ago. Now EVERYONE knows what it is, and that didn't happen out of thin air from positive influences.

Seriously? Do you think everyone besides you are morons and couldn't possibly have learned about Islam when you did 9 years ago? True, in the modern era... let's say compared to 1000 years ago.... the media is pretty good at hyping things, but still.

As long as they realize that:

many Afghanis are not Muslims,

most of the dead Muslims that they wish to remember have been killed by the Taliban and fellow 'foreign' Muslims.

But, if they realized this, then they wouldn't be marching there...

In fact, they want to honour not Muslims in general, but ONLY the ones fighting on the other side, the ones elsewhere labelled terrorists.

Please smith, compared to 9 years ago the majority of the US and other "western" societies didn't even care. The news never reported anything about "muslim extremists" and all there was was the Unabomber, Oklahoma city, Waco cult, the random embassy bombings, plane hijackings, and hostage situations. All that was mentioned was terrorism and nationalities of the perpatrators. Religious beliefs was never specified as constantly as it is now. Usually they'd just be labelled as a cult follower.

Now we have, "Insurgents", "Extremists", "Taliban", "Al-quida", "Jihads", "Fatwahs". As with all things, when the focus shifts, there will be more reporting done about it. Just its striking a lot more people on their shores and they're paying more attention to the goings on about them. Sure we can nit pick about filtering between the good and the bad all you want, but when it all comes down to it you have to pay attention to how the puzzle pieces are fitting together and what kind of picture its trying to create. When its at the point where muslim reformists are murdered for putting forward moving ideas calling for change, others being persecuted for changing their beliefs, and many more feeling their lives are threatened just for simple things, the picture doesn't get any clearer for me.

I've known about Islam well before but I pretty much didn't care about it and just chalked it up to another religious ideology, right up there with bhuddism, christianity, hindi, and the hari krishnas. In 1998 my uncle who is muslim made some pretty odd comments when I went to visit relatives, and I still didn't care. 2000 went to college in a different state, had a rather touchy muslim room-mate didn't care, my aquaintances sure as all get out didn't care and islam couldn't have been identified as anything special from all the others. Co-workers never mentioned it, didn't know much if anything about its existance. 2001, still nothing.

9/11 bam. Suddenly everyone wanted to know what the score was. Islamophobia was born and it spread. My uncles words came back to pester me, our muslim dorm mates base hostility ended up getting him kicked out of the school (still back in 2000) made a bit more sense as his beliefs took priority over everything else in his life.

Had 9/11 not happened even you would have to admit the US would probably be sitting on its haunches right now, Gore would have won over Bush, Iraq and Afghanistan most likely would have been left alone, islam would still be considered just another religion, and the US wouldn't be as crippled in debt as it is now from said involvement with the previously mentioned situations.

Not coming from the US I actually knew Islam before 2001 and I had never had a problem with it - apart from the problems I have with religion in general. Actually I find how the US government has beeng trying to turn Islam into the new boogeyman quite the offence to my intelligence. Also, at least in this case I agree with islam4UK. Thousands of innocent people have died just so the military industry could make a profit. Now, I dont care that much what religion they were but Im assuming that 99.9% of them were muslims. You know, normal people watcing TV at home, relaxing after a long days work, who just happen to believe in Allah... till a US bomb hit their house. Not terrorists, normal working people who unlike soldiers or terrorists dint sign up for it. Of course I also believe that your rip what you sow. For every child, man or woman coalition bombs kill there will be fathers, children and husbands ready to blow themselves up looking for revenge.

Heh, maybe the BNP can provide us with a simaltaneous counter-march and they can televise it.

It's been a while since I've seen an honest to good free-for-all. With a bit of luck they might even wipe each other out.....

one thing to consider Paolo, Lets say the innocent muslim family is living next to some extremists muslim fanatics that they can do nothing about. The extremists just happen to scare the complete heebee jeebees out of the innocent family and decide to start an attack from their home even though their own place is right next door. The innocent family is pretty much paralyzed by fear and happen to be collateral damage thanks to the extremists they can do nothing about.

Until we have some group of psychic soldiers that can read minds and identify one persons intentions from another in the same area this disgusting situation will continue to repeat itself until the enemy stops mingling with those that want nothing to do with them. Hint, the extremists don't wear uniforms, dress just like the other general populous. I'm pretty sure if any world military stopped wearing uniforms dressed in civilian cloths and mingled with the populous it would be extremely hard to pick friend from foe too. You don't know who your enemy is until they start shooting at you, by then its usually too late.

Well, and our pretending that islam has nothing to do with islamic terrorism does not exactly help the innocent family, does it now?

The group planning this march, by the way, is the same that planned the "Sharia for UK" march last year, which was shut down. All they have done is renamed it. They still demand that Western democracy is abandanoned in favour of complete Sharia rule.
