The only good thing that came out of this is that the perps were caught. Good on Brazil for catching them swiftly. That poor woman is going to need a ton of therapy and I'm sure her bf is seething. 3 on one is just evil, So take note that no matter where you go and how many people you travel with in a foreign country, always do things with safety in mind first. No trapsing around certain situations at night.
I wonder how the justice system works in Brazil. I don't think its that lax.

Nowhere in the world have I met more genuinely friendly people than in Brazil. Having walked around, with locals, in Rio at night, I can also say I didn't really feel safe. When even the locals say: "We'd better hurry, it's pretty dangerous here.", you know it probably is. I feel sorry for this couple and the terrible ordeal they had to go through and it does not reflect good on Rio. Unfortunately, I think we'll see more of this when the flow of tourists increase in the coming years and city officials really should do something about this - perhaps something á la New York an their stance against street crime back when.
Rio is a beautiful city - one of the most spectacular in the world and it's a shame it is being tarnished by scum like these boys.

When the Olympics come I hope that the tourists will have wise enough caution to listen to the travel warnings that will probably be advertised more frequently about the city at night.

When the olympics comes to town hopefully the beef up security have the police AND army if you have to.

don't think this is anissue for the Olympics. People worried about South Africa's poor crime rate prior to the World Cup but it actually went of pretty smoothly and with minimal criminal damage to visitors. what exactly these 3 were thinking is beyond me. They threw other passengers off the bus before proceeding with this crime? The bus must have had number plates and so on allowing the victims to identify it. Prolonged crime and even let the feamle victim go to hotel room alone? Used credit cards several times with high possibility of identification.
Seems like they didn't care iof they were caught. Or just dumb. Whichever, hope the punsihment fits the crime.

that's a helluva lot of gas, beer, chips, and candy bars.

"The men’s mug shots were also recognized by another woman who said she’d been raped by the three under similar circumstances last month. Another foreigner has said she’d been robbed by one of the three suspects, police said."
