I'm curious. At what point does a traffic stop turn into a question about citizenship? I've been pulled over a few times in my life, I can't remember ever having even a discussion about if I were a legal citizen or not. How do they decide when to probe?

The fact is, and this is something completely omitted by the right-wing media, that cities generally want to be a sanctuary city because 1) they don't have the budget, training, or resources to be a de facto immigration force in addition to being a police force, 2) they are being asked to hold people who are suspected of being illegal....without ever really knowing how to broach that (see above), and 3) they want the cooperation of illegals for things like police investigations, which dries up when people are afraid to step forward.

When that information is omitted, you can mostly focus on how people just love breaking laws and want illegals to live here since there's no other reason. The well trained then move into the area of Democrats wanting illegal votes, which ties in nicely to their made up fantasy of voter fraud.

In a statement, the Justice Department singled out Chicago and New York as two cities that are "crumbling under the weight of illegal immigration and violent crime," even though New York City is experiencing its lowest crime levels in decades and experts say Chicago's recent spike in violent crime has little to do with illegal immigration.

Ah, the benefits of the bubble. Just say the opposite of reality and get away with it. That should make you stop and think about their motivation.

At stake is roughly $29 million in federal law-enforcement aid under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which helps local governments pay for everything from forensics labs to drug courts.

Why would they want to cut that? It's just going to limit the police's ability to investigate, which amounts to nothing more than collective punishment. Which would include Trump supporters.

I can almost guarantee all right-wing responses will be about needing to be tough and enforcing laws and zero about anything written above.

Isn't the Republican party the party of less Fed. Government and more State/City independence from the former? Oh... I see, only when it is convenient.

Trump and his entire family have safely lived in a Sanctuary City their entire lives because that's how serious this issue is to him.

Can you imagine if Obama had threatened to cut off funding for red states?

I don't even have to say what would happen. Every single person here can imagine exactly what would have happened.

Imagine if the laws currently on the books had actually been enforced, not just selectively, over the last several years as is part of the OATH of OFFICE.

Can you imagine if Obama had threatened to cut off funding for red states?

Well there is that little matter of trans bathrooms in schools and Title IX monies.

Has everyone forgotten that Japan is only 70% of California. It is very easy to protect the borders of an island, especially a small one. Perhaps, Japan is a sanctuary island for the Japanese. President Trump should budget 100% of the funds to the sanctuary cities. In order to for the cities to receive the money, they must budget from those funds federal (warden) officers 24 hours a day at the major police stations who are in the "booking room" to ask about residency. This gives additional security in the "booking room," thus freeing a city officer to work on the streets.
