I went to Pompeii once. Fascinating place. A real Roman ghost town of 2,000 years ago. Surprisingly, the layout is not all that different from today's urban areas. As you walk around there, you'll step into restaurants, rich homes, poor homes, theaters, a stadium (where Pink Floyd performed), brothels, plazas. When I went there, I arrived in the morning and had planned to leave by noon. However, we didn't get out of there until dark and we still didn't have enough time to see everything. If you go, go early and plan on staying late and be sure to take a map or you might get lost. It's really a vast area they've uncovered and are still in the process of uncovering. Also, the art treasures of Pompeii (priceless mosaics & statues) are preserved at the National Museum of Naples, so you might want to go there for a few hours on your second day. A great way to spend a couple days in Italy.

Usually all you see are the plaster shapes of the victims, but at Herculaneum (another ancient ruin) which is smaller, closer to Naples but better preserved than Pompeii because its a more recent discovery, you can clearly see the well preserved teeth of the victims attached to the plaster casts. Needless to say, some of the expressions on their faces are quite chilling.
