My favorite part is that the hack didn't effect the pipeline, it effected billing. They shut off gas to half the country over fears they would lose some profit.

The real heck of all of this is that Colonial was told in 2014 that they were vulnerable and the did NOTHING. The CIO, the CEO and the CISO (if they even have one) all need to go.

Or the US president can lift sanctions so that a Russian pipeline can operate.

cause we gotta make sure Russia can sell gas to Germans while our own gas prices go up and we do without.

can’t we just tell other countries to drive overpriced electric trucks that no one can afford and with no places to charge it?

So basically Biden wants to punish America for using oil and wants us to be less energy independent but wants us to be dependent on China because a lot of the minerals you need to create this overly expensive energy experiment comes from China...

I feel like Solyndra happening all over again, this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever....

As long as the perpetrators are hunted down and killed, all is good. An attack on vital infrastructure is an act of war and should be dealt with as such. Quietly perhaps, but dealt with nonetheless.

Well one silver lining is that Bitcoin dropped a lot recently. Their return dropped down to $2.8 million.

I hope I'm never in that position, having to pay for ransomware. If I need the data then I need the data and I suppose I'd pay, too.

zichi: The responsibility and blame are 100% Colonial Pipeline.

Agreed.

Selfish. $4m is nothing. They could of paid in 10min, but instead caused a national meltdown.

a few years back, my boss had to pay protection money for his business. It wasn’t so much, and we watched as his rival businesses got harassed and one burnt down because they didn’t pay. His bar suddenly became the number one in the area and all staff got bonuses. Nobody was hurt.

not condoning violence of any kind, but if you have a business, you need to factor in “overheads”.

proves Colonial treats their customers as sh.

By paying attackers the large sum of ransom, Colonial Pipeline is setting a bad example. Expect more such hacking that has caused energy supply havoc in US in the future.

Have other options been exhausted before the payment?

Not a fan of hacking, see the recent heinous attack on Irish hospitals which surely must have been covered here?

However,

As long as the perpetrators are hunted down and killed, all is good. An attack on vital infrastructure is an act of war and should be dealt with as such. Quietly perhaps, but dealt with nonetheless

is just the kind of hyperbole and violent rhetoric from the far right, that does nothing to address the predominance of relying on a finite fuel. A fuel that causes conflict, poverty and such attacks.

A fuel source that we’re not going to give up on at least for the next foreseeable future. The main difference with the right is, they want to be energy independent and the left wants us to be more dependent on China that is something that I don’t think is a good trade off at all, puts Biden deeper in China’s pockets.

OMG you are just super adorbs!!!

You don't quite seem to grasp the concept of "pipeline" which is like, so cute. Let me explain it to you though.

When a pipeline that moves fuel between New York and Texas gets shut down, like this one did, you can't just start operating one in Russia and expect it to perform the task of moving fuel between New York and Texas.

"Why?", you may ask. Excellent question. Because in order to move fuel between New York an Texas a pipeline has run between New York and Texas, which aren't in Russia.

Ouch, the total lack of understanding and comprehension here even hurts me.

It would help for those of us without your special sense of understanding and comprehension if you could explain how operating a pipeline in Russia as you suggested is going to solve the problem of a pipeline between Texas and New York going offline.
