Wisconsin Gov Scott Walker thrilled activists Saturday by declaring: “In America, we believe in the people and not in the government.”

Some people are obviously very easily "thrilled".

Like the fabulously successful businessman/governor? Like the decorated war hero and multi-term senator?

I've been thinking lately that it will be the democrats who may have trouble in 2016. I cant imagine who they will field as a candidate. Former Sec. Clinton will be rather old, out of the spotlight, and carries a lot of negatives due to her name and husband. The current VP is even older, and somewhat of a joke frankly. Seems to me they have a very limited talent pool to draw from.

VRWC is right, the Dems do need to worry a bit and the way things are going with the economy NOW.... And yes, Biden is not only old, but to even think of him as a contender is off the charts laughable, it'll never happen. I'll give it another 1 1/2 year until the people really wake up and realize what the heck is going on in the country. By then the Obama mystique and glitter should be worn off and the harsh reality will have finally set in and that's when you'll see people wanting to have a real change, but not of the current one we're going through.

I would call Obama and his buddies in the White House ideological zealots bent on bankrupting American and destroying the future for the children and grandchildren of the middle and lower class. Given that he is a multi-millionaire his kids will be fine though - so all of you Obama-zombies can rest easy with that knowledge.

I am not a huge fan but Palin's jibe's at the Left's constant attempts at micro-managing other peoples lives was great. The Left must be dumbfounded that a woman can drink a Big Gulp and still look so physically fit.

The writer of this article states that Rubio thinks that we "don't need any new ideas" but that is playing fast and loose with his actual words. To say that the idea of America and it's Founding principles still work then I totally agree. Those principles are based on a profound understanding of human nature and the tendency for centralized power to be corrupting. That is a true now as in any other period of human history.

Hillary will be 69 by the next election cycle, and has health issues that will be used against her. Old, fragile, and female, is not a good formula for a president. But as I said, who else is there that can be seen as a reasonable alternative for the Democrats? Who are their young ideas people? They seem like a party of the 1%, mostly old white people.

Pres. Obama won because he is a truly gifted campaigner, and was able to distract people from the serious issues the country faces. Unfortunately, he hasnt stopped campaigning. He needs to start being Presidential and leading.

Rubio is truly a leaf in the wind, one day he says one thing thing, the next day another. Plus he has a history of ethical problems and being born to Cuban parents may not be eligible in any case. Jeb wouldn't be a bad candidate if his last name wasn't Bush. He’s not an ideal candidate, but I don’t think anyone is.

Romney specifically pointed to governors who have sought a larger national profile, including Bob McDonnell of Virginia, Chris Christie of New Jersey and Walker.

This is exactly the problem: The GOP does have a deep bench of state governors - but then, it did during the last cycle, too. Look how many threw their hat in the ring.

Herein lie two problems. The first is that what is required to be an effective governor is exactly what would lose an aspirant the nomination: Compromise. That Christie wasn't invited is glaring proof of this; he's not even particularly moderate, but even a word of respect regarding the President is enough to pique right-wing wrath. Another example is Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, who probably just destroyed his 2016 chances with a $6.1 billion transportation tax increase to alleviate Virginia's paralyzing congestion. He wasn't invited to CPAC, either. Romney was a successful governor, but he had an advantage of a decade between his service and the race; nonetheless, the necessity that he be against everything he was once for defined him in an ill light more than anything else - even the 47% gaffe.

The second is that what is required to be nominated by the current GOP: That you take positions which negate future state executive positions in most any state outside of those in the deep south. Take Romney (please!): His chances at being elected governor anywhere are now nil, which is much less than they were before he 'redifined' himself. No successful governor aside from, say, Perry of Texas, whose electorate is very far-right, would want to subject themselves to this treatment. That is why, say, John Kasich of Ohio didn't run in 2012: he would have had to kiss his day job goodby in the likely event that he lost. It is also why Scott Walker will probably not run in 2016 - unless the far right has proven to be emasculated by then.

Dr. Benjamin Carlson an independent also spoke at CPAC and during a prayer breakfast at Obama's inauguration time. Highly recommended on "you tube" search and enjoy the real American life, which is an opposite of Obama. Cheers.

The longer the GOP hangs on to the idea that Sarah Palin is intelligent, the dumber it looks. If you want to have a discussion about the size and role of government, fine. That's necessary. But opportunistic polemicists like Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Steve King, Michelle Bachmann, Michelle Malkin, etc do nobody any good, including their own party. There are intelligent and reasonable Republicans out there. They just don't hold the floor anymore.

It's an embarrassment that the world's most powerful country has seen its political discourse dragged down to a junior high school level by these clowns.

On a side note, the Big Gulp is sold by a convenience store, while only restaurants are covered by the law limiting drink size. Whatever happens to the law, Palin is free to gum her innards with a Big Gulp - or even a 64 oz. Super Big Gulp, aka "Satan's Choice."

She might have chosen a better example such as her sparkin' a doobie in a Maryland park - now that is illegal. Or does her concern for freedom only extend so far?

There are a whole new crop of Republicans that seem to understand the country and are willing to stand up and be counted and not go along to get along. That is really needed today. I have watched some of the speeches, Ted Cruz - Rand Paul - Allen West. They get it. The old guard, many have stayed too long at the fair and have been going along to get along need to wake up. and start listening.

The good doctor in full force. Dr. Carson at CPAC was even more appealing than the National Prayer Breakfast speech IMO. Democrats might not even field a ticket if he were on it. lol He is the real deal.

Not to worry -- there are plenty of republican clowns auditioning in the circus at present, and it's pretty clear they've forgotten all the reasons they keep losing, save a couple who admit they have to reflect on all Americans and not just the rich white guys. They'll lose the next election as well, the way they are going, so they won't be able to blame everything on everyone else but themselves in the WH quite yet. If they can get into the 20th century (not even the 21st) by 2020, they might have a chance, but we're talking about republicans after all.

Sheesh, how many times do we have to go through this? Please, Serrano - please! - indicate ANY Obama-instituted program that has added to the national debt aside from the stimulus, which has already ended (unlike expenses for the Iraq war).

Right-wing mythology is somewhat mysterious. Do they really believe it - do they really believe that the deficit is due to some plethora or programs Obama somehow managed to sneak thorough the House? Do they really believe that Obama is some existential threat to the American way? Or do they just repeat what they receive from the right-wing echo chamber as a way to lash out? Really, I'd hope that it is the latter, for I despair at seeing people so divorced from reality.

Ted Cruz can't run because he isn't Constitutional and Allen West I don't support for president. But the liberal agenda of a president that is ruining the American way of life is a lethal combination of affirmative action, entitlement mentality and political correctness run amuk, off the rails, completely unhinged and out of control. The GOP has also been coopted by statists and there needs to be a correction and it needs to be from someone that doesn't practice total capitulation again, before the fight even starts. All Paul Ryan is asking is can we go back to the spending level of the Clinton administration ? Rand Paul has some of the best discussion of solutions for the debt crisis that I have seen. He needs to be hammering that above and beyond drones or gay marriage and the tax code. You can’t destroy the financial infrastructure of a republic by implementing common sense ideas. Obama, with his “Community Organizer” background has an “us against them we've got to get ours” mentality, but that’s not “what we are” as a nation.

I agree. Especially where he says we need to take a look at both entitlements and defense. But Libertarians are often their own worst enemies. For every smart comment they seem to balance it out with a heaping dose of crazy, like when Paul says he is against title II of the Civil Rights act. Just makes you scratch your head and wonder what they hell they are thinking.

I don't think you really want to go there buddy, compared to the man we have in the WH right, on credentials alone, she would put the man to shame, so yes, she is intelligent on that alone. Beck has his own network, Limbaugh had is own TV program, King, Bachman and Malkin have long credentials, putting them side by side next to our commander-in-chief, he's an ace, literally.

As I just mentioned, they are, but liberals love to choose who they think that conservatives should choose someone that is not as threatening to liberals that would make liberals look bad. You want to pick controversial conservatives that are demonized and ridiculed by the media, someone that would be easy to beat in an election and that trick is as old as 10 week moldy bread sitting on a kitchen counter.

There are intelligent and reasonable Republicans out there. They just don't hold the floor anymore.

When President Barack Obama took the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2009, the total federal debt held by the public stood at 6.3073 trillion, according to the Bureau of the Public Debt, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department. As of Aug. 20, 2010, after the first nineteen months of President Obama’s 48-month term, the total federal debt held by the public had grown to a total of $8.8333 trillion, an increase of $2.5260 trillion.

In just the last four months (May through August), according to the CBO, the Obama administration has run cumulative deficits of $464 billion, more than the $458 billion deficit the Bush administration ran through the entirety of fiscal 2008.

The CBO predicted this week that the annual budget deficit for fiscal 2010, which ends on the last day of this month, will exceed $1.3 trillion.

The first two fiscal years in which Obama has served will see the two biggest federal deficits as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product since the end of World War II.

Not to mention, Obamacare will likely add $4 to $6 trillion to the deficit over the next 20 years, and possibly more.

We examine the intended result of legislation, compare that to the results, and weight the legislative ramifications of that legislation to determine whether or not it should be handled by the government. The argument against Title II is based on it's counterproductivity and the right of individuals to do as they please with their businesses, however repugnant their views may be. I fully support those sections that prohibit discrimination by federal and state institutions however.

Alright, I concede they have a certain kind of intelligence: they're good at distilling and exaggerating public sentiment from the lowest common denominator for their own benefit. They're also very clever in misrepresenting their opponents and the issues that must be faced. I can make you a list, if you want, but I doubt it would have any effect on you.

The stage was emblazoned with the words “America’s Future: The Next Generation of Conservatives”

Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin and her large cola, Michele Bachman, Rick Santorum, the founder of the Tea Party, Mitt Romney. Yep, the "next generation" of conservatives. It's great that they gave these people time to speak so the world can hear them. Please keep doing it.

Christie was not invited to the conference after rankling some conservatives by complimenting Obama’s response to Superstorm Sandy.

Ah, so the most liked and most electable conservative was left off the list because he complemented Obama. Just awesome.

She can be governor of Alaska. Maybe she's a good one, in fact, even though she quit. But as someone who gives speeches at conferences that define the conservative movement...? Not so much. On the world stage she comes off as a moron, especially when writing stuff on her hand and dodging questions she obviously doesn't know the answer to when it comes to foreign policy. She's obviously not suited for that specific job and the rest of the world is left wondering why no one in the Republican party seems to be able to see that. I'm happy to go along with Republicans because it's just awesome to watch them punch themselves in the gut over and over. Don't change a thing, the American people will change for you.

This is a battle that you're going to lose, and not only that you're going to go down in flames and take hits all the way until it crashes into the ground in a heaping mess. In short, it's counterproductive. Maybe you've found a mental trick to make it make sense in your mind, but to the rest of the people it's just not going to resonate. And you're going to ask for their trust in you when making other policy decisions in the government.

My apologies for being late in commenting on this thread. I spent most of the afternoon laughing at the conservatives mentioned in the article. :-)

This latest bunch of conservative losers know of and cares about the middle class about as much as Mitt Romney did for the 47%.

They also underline that the GOP has learnt precisely nothing from it's back-to-back election thrashings.

Obviously, the most important question for the Democratic party leadership between now and 2016 is: will this crop of ideological rejects self-destruct faster than the last lot, or will they somehow manage to cling to the life raft a little while longer and provide ongoing fodder for talk show hosts?

Even if the 2016 democratic candidates are relatively weak, I predict they will have a very enjoyable time watching as the yawning intellectual black hole of their conservative counterparts kills off GOP chances yet again.

The simple fact that CPAC actually gave even 1 second of airtime to Sarah Palin illustrates nothing has changed in the GOP.

And if Rubio's comments are taken board and conservatives don't change, it'll be lights out and good night GOP for the 3rd straight time. 

This CPAC is great, great news for the Democratic Party.

One of a laundry list of things I find completely bizarre about modern conservatives is that they regularly eliminate their candidates who have the best chance of appealing to broad swaths of voters for being "too moderate" - ie: Chris Christie, John Huntsman, etc. - and instead nominate the most backward-thinking, anti-everything nominees that only appeal to  hardcore, far Right extremists.

Then they wonder why they keep losing the popular vote, and - amazingly -  hold serious post-mortem conferences to "analyze" why they lost yet again.

They lost because conservative ideology has become too extreme and unpalatable to mainstream Americans.

But our friends Wolfpack, Serrano, Bass4funk, etc. will have us believe it's all big spendin' Obama's fault.

That's fine guys, keep believing your own made up fantasies.

Just don't expect the GOP to ever win again. :-)

The underlying problem for conservatives today is they simply don't know how to win.

Their current strategy is akin to telling a hot 18-year-old girl to wear granny pants on her first date.

It's just not going to appeal to those who need to be turned on.

You forgot to mention Dr. Ben Carson in your listing of speakers. No worries so did the media. Dr. Carson lit the conference on fire when he stated:

But Libertarians are often their own worst enemies. For every smart comment they seem to balance it out with a heaping dose of crazy, like when Paul says he is against title II of the Civil Rights act. Just makes you scratch your head and wonder what they hell they are thinking.

I agree; even though he is only a libertarian leading Republican, he needs to work on some things. Sometimes you must sacrifice ideology to practical reality and he already has basically in hand a winning coalition of conservatives and honest liberals that are absolutely won over with his “simple and creative” policies on fiscal issues and civil liberties. Rand Paul represents the third way. Small gov, liberty and suspicious eye on the evil schemers of Wall Street. I don’t have to like everything he stands for to be glad that he’s standing for something.

This is a battle that you're going to lose, and not only that you're going to go down in flames and take hits all the way until it crashes into the ground in a heaping mess. In short, it's counterproductive. Maybe you've found a mental trick to make it make sense in your mind, but to the rest of the people it's just not going to resonate. And you're going to ask for their trust in you when making other policy decisions in the government.

Since when have I ever been overly preoccupied with what resonates with other people? If someone looks at the data and comes to a different conclusion than me I would like to hear their opinion. We got into this situation by pandering to the lowest common denominators of both parties, why not listen before rejecting out of hand?

On that note, yeah most people would have a knee jerk reaction to the position. That's why I'm in corporate compliance, but if Rand Paul or anyone else that does hold a political office has the will to explain their position I'd like nothing more.

I really wish that if the Republicans put forth another female candidate for either pres/vice pres I'd totally be happy if it was Codoleeza Rice. At least she has experience in the political field.

Whomever is going to be the upcoming candidates from both sides, they'd better be damned smart/wise/ and looking out for the country, not just a select few with deep pockets... but then again I'm dreaming.

Her expertise resides in energy and in the management of natural resources. She guided and managed Alaska's oil bounty quite well and earned praised from all quarters while in charge as Governor. This falls in the realm of conjecture but yes I truly can and I base not on my personal faith but in my faith in the American people. In the unlikely event that McCain would have been able to overcome the Bush legacy and a tanked economy hanging around his neck and actually prevailed over Obama in 2008 Palin would be the Vice President.

Taking further if McCain had met a horrible circumstance that ended his life while in office then Palin would be President of the U.S. but before that thought gives you hives consider the American people and our history.

After every single President in the U.S who was succeeded by their Vice President during their term the country rallys behind the Vice Presdient regardless of personal politics. Lyndon Johnson after JFK, Harry Truman after FDR, Gerald Ford after Nixon. The country knows the burden that is thrust upon the Vice President and these are times that the country truly puts country over self and offers her full support.

To put another way in the above scenario if it really did happen to pass, would you be supporting her if she was thrust into the position under tragic circumstances?. I think I know you better than that and you would also rally to support her until the actual scheduled election when you could in then throw your support to a nominated challenger. Just like I would with Biden if he was all of the sudden thrust into the job.

Because deep down despite our differences you and I are Americans first and our political philosphy differences truly do come in second.

Interesting, McCain was considered well versed in foreign affairs and didn't need a V.P pick to shore up a perceived lack of expertise in foreign affairs. Obama did have a weakness in that area as his experience as a community organizer as in teaching people how to fill out forms to get U.S Govt bennies doesn't lend one to be called an expert in international relations. It was one of the primary reasons he picked Biden as his V.P as Biden's Senate Foreign Relations Comittee membership really did bolster his lack of credentials in that area.

Interesting also that almost every V.P pick prior to the 2008 election, foreign policy expertise was never really a major factor at all. Ryan in 2012 was picked for his economic expertise for example as the primary reason for his pick. I'd actually be interested if you could actually name any V.P pick besides Biden in the past from both parties that was chosen primarly for their knowledge of foreign policy I know I can't off the top of my head at.

The media sure did focus on Palin's lack of foreign policy credentials as Obama's annoited gatekeepers though. The media knew that this was the prime and easest "gotcha" area for them to focus on Palin to get her looking like a "moron" and they sure went on that full bore. Popular left wing dominated culture from SNL to Jon Stewart just piled on also to re-enforce it in a double whammy of discredit and your low information voter absorbs it and then repeats it, now mindlessly believing that "I can Russia from my house" is actually a quote from Palin and not a parody quote uttered by Tina Fey.

Highly doubtful, I've been observing liberal behavior for years now and how they always tend react at the mere mention of her name. Liberal folks tend to totally lose their normally adult rational minds and then revert to third graders that are making fun of a girl they don't like on the playground with the requisite mindless childish insults.

No more sophisticated than Obama appearing for I don't know how many times on "The View" he gets popular culture and so do the Democrats much better than Republicans do as a whole. Palin though is an exception to that as she gets popular culture and its influence on your typical low information voter far better then most Republicans do.

What image / method do you think will resonate with your typical low information voter if you want to make the point that Government has gotten even more bigger and intrusive in your life under Obama and and to promote a mocking rebellion against it?

A). Holding up a big gulp to mock Mayor Bloomberg and his nanny state and having that image printed throughout even a hostile media.

B). Writing an OP-ED for publication the Wall Street Journal using the regulations of Big Gulps as a prime example of excessive Government regulation and nanny state going wild.

I'd go with A.
