"Rescue mission under way at Azovstal steelworks in Ukraine as hundreds evacuated"

The words 'rescue' and 'evacuated', here, seem to play the same role as the words 'strategic withdrawal' play in a 'hasty' retreat. Wouldn't 'surrender' be a less weaselly and more honest way of describing the actual situation, albeit 'honest' would be a much more surprising thing to find in the Western media in ANYTHING Uke related... So, given that the "last ditch" has been unclogged, do we, can we, now admit that Russia has 'won' Mariupal?

"He had gone back to collect some belongings but returned empty-handed and stunned by the incessant artillery fire."

Artillery. Since we first started throwing rocks at each other about 70ky ago, after transforming from innately, obligately co-operative groups which expanded our collective crania over a million years into the psychopath dominated, hierarchical mobs we are today, the only thing which has changed has been the technical details of the rocks we throw, our mentality remains the same. Why are WE here? Looking out at this immense Universe, can It be as pointless as WE seem to be?

The fanatics didn't surrender to 'Russian forces', they surrendered to the Free Donetsk army.

The so-called Free Donetsk army is russian forces; the Ukrainians are not 'fanatics', they are heroes defending their country.

an implicit recognition of the existence of an independent state of Donetsk by those who swore to crush the Donetsk rebellion against the foreign installed regime that attempted to claim sovereignty over all of what used to be ruled by a democratically elected government in Kiev.

You seem to be confused.

Doing whatever is necessary to get injured people the medical help they need is not implicit recognition of anything, apart from human need.

There is no 'foreign installed regime' in Ukraine, apart from the russian-backed rebel enclaves in the east. The current government in Kyiv was democratically elected in free and fair elections in 2019, monitored by 2,369 international observers.

Their doing so, at the orders of the Kiev regime no less, is an implicit recognition of the existence of an independent state of Donetsk by those who swore to crush the Donetsk rebellion

No, not really. Ordering a surrender to russian surrogates, whatever they call themselves, doesn’t create any kind of recognition, not even implicit.

The defeat of the Kiev regime's forces in the last major city in Donetsk may be being given a positive spin in the propaganda pieces, but carefully avoiding the most crushing detail in these pieces doesn't prevent it having real world significance.

The fanatics didn't surrender to 'Russian forces', they surrendered to the Free Donetsk army.

Their doing so, at the orders of the Kiev regime no less, is an implicit recognition of the existence of an independent state of Donetsk by those who swore to crush the Donetsk rebellion against the foreign installed regime that attempted to claim sovereignty over all of what used to be ruled by a democratically elected government in Kiev.

It's going to be rather difficult for the Kiev regime to demand that the next treaty leave the ambiguity of 'autonomous region' intact when it has effectively acknowledged Donetsk to be an independent sovereign state. The best it can hope for is a symbolic 'concession' in exchange for a formal recognition that it has zero claims over Donetsk territory.

Love how a group of fanatics holed up in the tunnels below a single industrial complex in a city of lots of heavy industry, who's every attempt to get an above ground firing position established failed, somehow held control of a city who's municipal workers were out replacing the signs that the Kiev regime had forced them to take down when it's fighters actually held control over the city, so unbothered by the notion that the fanatics could do anything other than surrender or die alone that they wore their normal work clothes, and the local politicians staged photo ops around the restored signs.

It's rather like pretending that the fanatics holed up in their farm near Waco Texas held control over that city.

On Monday more than 260 fighters were evacuated through humanitarian corridors to areas under Russian and Moscow-backed separatists' control,

In short, they have surrendered.

Rescue? So the Ukrainian forces managed to reach Mariupol to rescue their colleagues in the steelworks? More like surrender. But it's about time they came out. They were told not to surrender until Ukraine got what they wanted - the Eurovision Song Contest.

tooheysnew.....

what war crimes did they commit ?

Plenty, but not many that are reported on in the Pro Ukrainian propaganda news.

OK so after reading several other more reliable news services.

They were not "rescued" they surendered to Russia, taken to a Russian controled hospital in a Russian controled city.

I mean this is where we are now publishing Ukrainian propaganda as news.

All those that previously believed all the reports by this same news service of all the destroyed tanks, dead Russian soldiers, etc... maybe you should rethink what news to believe.

At this point the propaganda war on both sides is pumping out more and more unbelievable junk

There is no rescue mission as such by Ukraine. It is the Russians who are letting wounded soldiers out on compassionate grounds, especially if the wounded are normal Ukraine army and not the Azov Nazi's

At least the Russians don't beat, torture, shoot prisoners in the knees and genitals as can be seen on some videos. Nor do they beat and crucify citizens on a cross and then light a fire under them and burn them alive. Again video proof has been circulated.

As for the remaining Nazis, Russia won't be kind to them.

"Rescue mission under way at Azovstal steelworks in Ukraine as hundreds evacuated"

This really must win an award for the most misleading heading so far in 2022....

How many on here at first thought there had been a daring raid by Ukrainian forces?

Prisoner exchanges have been occurring throughout the war.

It has been reported that prisoners of war have been moved to near the Russian border after their ahem........."rescue mission".

I wonder if any of these Azov Neo naughties will get tried as war criminals ?

what war crimes did they commit ?

defending their homeland from an invading horde ?

Prisoner exchanges have been occurring throughout the war. Very likely exchange arrangements were made prior to the surrender. This benefits both countries to have this location emptied.

”Rescue mission"..... No it is a SURRENDER!

They put up a good fight and then became an annoyance by hiding underground, they are not being rescued but taken prisoner and being moved to the Russian controlled areas.

I don't understand this. Who evacuated the Ukrainian soldiers to towns controlled by Russia? It sounds like they will be traded for Russian prisoners of war held by Ukraine. Isn't this a prisoner exchange at this point? I'm asking seriously, if someone is willing to explain.

"On Monday more than 260 fighters were evacuated through humanitarian corridors to areas under Russian and Moscow-backed separatists' control, with Ukraine's defense ministry saying a further "exchange procedure" would take place later."

Another example of "creative" writing!

On Monday more than 260 SERIOUSLY WOUNDED Ukrainian fighters were allowed by Russia (not liberated by Ukraine) to evacuate to hospitals in Russia controlled areas (NOT Kyev's)

This effectively seals the fate of remaining, not wounded Azov fighters who still remain but are not allowed to evacuate.

Interesting "propaganda" article.

And it is 100% propaganda.

Now because I say that doesn't mean I suppose Russia it means exactly what I said it is not news it is a propaganda piece.

I have to go read The Guardian and other "news" organisations to learn that the:

Ukrainian authorities said a rescue mission to extract the last defenders of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol was under way on Tuesday, after hundreds of soldiers were evacuated in an earlier operation.

Wasn't any rescue mission, it was an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to remove the wounded and a certain number of troops.

Then the rest of this article is just more of "the brave Ukrainian" blah blah blah.

Please find a more accurate news source less bias on one or the other side.

has managed to repel the Russian army for longer than many expected, fortified by weapons and cash from Western allies.

The above seems to be true, but ignores the act that many Ukrainians are bravely fighting to defend their families, homes and homeland from Putin's invading forces. Probably because many of those who are fighting the invading Russians want their homeland to remain independent, and have no desire to once again be under the jackboots of the Kremlin. Many might directly remember the horrors of the Holomodor, many others might not recall directly but have learned about how Moscow led forces had previously brutalized Ukraine and other SSSRs.

Russia take your armies back home to deal with problems there, and use the money being spent destroying Ukraine to fix problems you made and also within your own border. If Putin is sick, use some of the money he's taken from Russia to pad his personal bank accounts so he can get better treatment; maybe sell one of his palaces.. Help people stay alive, stop killing them.
