“People of Europe: Rise Up!” read one banner in Rome. Some activists turned against the violent group, trying to stop them and shouting “Enough!” and “Shame!” ...Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno blamed the violence on “a few thousand thugs from all over Italy, and possibly from all over Europe, who infiltrated the demonstration.”

Who are these thugs?

I wouldn't put it past ol' Berlusconi to slip in some police or intelligence agents to stir things up

I wouldn't put it past lots of people in most governments anywhere. The tactic is as old as the hills, like as was done and sparked the Haymarket massacre in 1886. I am just waiting for this to happen elsewhere.

I am glad to see the press separate the Occupy protestors from the rioters. Of course after trying their best to ignore the movement for two weeks, I guess they don't want to violate public trust any further. Give them time though. Money comes first with the slime that owns the presses.

@tideofiron

These "thugs" appeared to be better coordinated and orchestrated than the protesters. How many were there?

A key event that formed a lot of my thinking about the reality called the United States. The monument in Forest Home Cemetery is sacred ground for me.

There are always some criminals prepared to take advantage of what was supposed to be a peacefull protest

Yes, exactly. Look up "agent provocateur" to anyone unfamiliar with the term and you'll find that it's often the intelligence agencies or the police who cause the trouble during otherwise peaceful demonstrations. They've been caught before - being allowed to slip behind police lines or wearing police issue boots etc.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi called the violence a "worrying signal," and added that the perpetrators "must be found and punished."

And now the solutions are starting to be introduced. Use the violence to give the demos a bad image and if it goes on long enough, introduce new laws which benefit the very people and institutions the people are protesting against.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi called the violence a "worrying signal" ... but people like him and his globalist friends are the most violent people on the planet. In Berlusconi's case think the illegal invasion of Libya and slaughter of tens of thousands of civilians. What a hypocrite.

What do these people want to accomplish again?

What do these people want to accomplish again?

They want free money so they don't have to work.

Criminals ruin it for everyone

Rising prices,no jobs or prospects and government austerity programs cutting welfare for the needy.

Look a little harder and we can see that people are being goaded into action like this.

When circumstances become grimmer and there is more blood on the streets there will come a solution.

That solution might be a double edged sword though.......

Meanwhile back in the US, two rousing endorsements were announced today in suppor of the OWS movement.

The first came from the American Nazi Party who's leader is quoted as saying: "What is really MISSING – is the “MOVEMENT” from these popular protests – its time to pull WN heads out of their collective ass’s, and JOIN IN the attack on Judeo-Capitalism."

The second came from the Communist Party USA "This is an exciting time! Thousands of mainly young people have been occupying Wall Street for three weeks already, and the “Occupy Movement” has spread to more than 200 other cities. The movement is the newest wrinkle in the all-people’s upsurge against the banks and corporations and reflects a new level of class-consciousness."

Politics makes strane bedfellows as the saying goes.

It occurred to me that there has yet to be a peep from China. I haven't read anything yet about the CCP's stance towards this unrest; what might normally elicit gloating instead seems to be met with deafening silence.

People in democracies are making their voices heard. Passions will heat, certain politicians will be elected as a result, and with hope change will occur peacefully. China does not have that release valve. Methinks there is panic in Zhongnanhai at the moment.

That sort of smear is as old as the hills and is known as guilt by association. I understand that no one can expect much better from the source.

In fact the Nazis were not endorsing the OWS movement. That is an obvious falsehood. The Nazi's, like the lawless thugs in Italy who crashed the peaceful march in Rome, are only looking to take advantage of a situation.

American Nazis and American communists are both such tiny groups on the fringe that even mentioning what they saying and thinking about OWS gives them far more credit than they deserve.

They are not "bedfellows" with OWS. That is another falsehood. To be a political bedfellow means that both sides support each other on a particular issue. I have not seen any evidence where OWS in the U.S. is lending support to Nazis or the communist party.

It would be very interesting to know what China is reporting on the OWS story. I sense they would have to mute it, much like the US mainstream media did at the outset.

@yabits: I keep hearing from the left that the Tea Party movment is nothing but a bunch of klansmen with their robes off. So are you telling me that is just some of the same old smear of guilt by association? Regardless of the source, they did put it out on their webpage and twitter, so just because you don't like who is telling you the informationdoesn't mean that it is not there.

Funny, how I kept seeing in the news that many of the left wanted GOP and Tea Party leaders to denounce the supposed racist rhetoric and hate filled groups that they say belong to the Tea Party. Can I expect to see the same from the Dems to go out and say thanks but no thanks to those rining endorsements?

So you thought since the smears against the teaparty were unfair that you'd turn around and smear the OWS movement?

That there is a racist element within the Tea Party has been born out by time. Anyone who knows anything about American history would see the strong similarities between the positions taken by the Tea Party and those taken by prior groups with populist-nativist sentiments, the second "rebirth" of the Klan being one of them. Here in Georgia, there are places where whites and blacks must hold separate high-school proms. Is it only coincidence that those rural areas are solid conservative and Tea Party bastions? (There are also some small rural counties which are predominantly African-American; you won't find much Tea Party support there.)

I didn't see where you provided any proof that the Nazis and communists were endorsing the goals of OWS, only the fact that OWS has successfully drawn committed supporters into the streets. As the style of populism, suggestions of violence, and anti-immigrant rhetoric of the Tea Party has a direct link to historical groups like the Klan and America First, OWS has such a link, but it's not to the Nazis or communists. They are more like the 60s civil rights and anti-war groups. Time will tell if a violence-endorsing faction will rise from among them -- as the Black Panthers and Weather Underground came about. But so far, there is not the slightest evidence of that.

Your avid interest in what the Nazis and Communists are talking about and willingness to slander OWS by associating OWS with them says more about you. There is no evidence whatsoever that any elements of the OWS endorse the Nazis or communists. Nor is OWS a movement that has an association with the Democratic Party.

So you thought since the smears against the teaparty were unfair that you'd turn around and smear the OWS movement?

Busted...

Comparisons to the tea party people hurt the OWS .They highlight the media treatment of the two movements. OWS participants cannot agree on candidates to endorse. The tea party on the other hand made a difference in 2010; people dont want to admit that tho.
