Here's a clue Mitt. Some types of business success can appear more upstanding and moral than others.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

is so foreign to us we simply don’t understand it

Note the use of the word foreign. The suggestion once again is that Obama is "un-American" because he does not blindly pledge allegiance to the myth that America is an even playing field where all wealth is honestly earned by hard work and without privilege.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

plastic: Born with silver spoon in mouth Mitt just doesn't get it.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Some Republicans have also urged Romney to release the returns to put an end to the issue and bring the debate about the Nov 6 election back to Obama’s handling of the economy.

United as always....

0 ( +2 / -2 )

He's not questioning your success, Mitt, he's questioning the shortcuts you took, and the people you screwed, to achieve it.

So long as Mitt refuses to release his records, even at the behest of his own party, he won't live this down.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

@paulinusa -- Romney cannot help who his parents were -- he gave this entire inheritance to charity and contributes around 18% of his income to charitable causes every year -- so I think he "gets it."

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Tatanka, when I say he doesn't get it, I mean he's incapable of coming across as other than someone who just came from the country club or just stepped off his yacht. Fair or not, that's the perception.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

As he should, Obama put his foot in his mouth, how insulting is that to accuse people like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Ted Turner that basically, they didn't do anything to earn it on their own, how absurd is that? Now for sure we know where this Presidents mind is. We have a spending problem in the country. Where the rich are paying the majority of the taxes anyway. But this president wants to punish success, wants to punish entrepreneurship, but wants to vilify the so called rich, in essence penalize them for taking a stand on building successful businesses. I will submit if Romney should fork over his tax returns then equally, Obama should clarify his positions on increasing taxes on everyone to pay for his Obamacare and how is he going to get the economy going. Fair is fair, but as usually it's only fair if liberals see it to their political advantage.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

He's not questioning your success, Mitt, he's questioning the shortcuts you took, and the people you screwed, to achieve it.

But he keeps pressing the presumption that Romney's wealth, and anybody else's wealth for that matter, was attained through illegitimate means, like you just did. So yes, he is demonizing the wealthy.

And you know what the best part is? Even when he does release the returns the attacks won't go away. It's not like the average person has the financial experience needed to actually properly interpret his returns and since a huge bulk of it is probably wraped up in mutual funds and other money handling institutions it becomes even more complicated. Then they look to every other crackpot on cable news telling them what it 'really' means.

I've said it before that I don't really like either of them as candidates and if it hadn't been for the healthcare act I'd probably just vote for a third party like I always do. First time I've ever pulled a vengence vote, I guess thats at least one thing the President has accomplished.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

"...how insulting is that to accuse people like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Ted Turner that basically, they didn't do anything to earn it on their own, how absurd is that? "

When did he say that?

"But this president wants to punish success, wants to punish entrepreneurship, but wants to vilify the so called rich, in essence penalize them for taking a stand on building successful businesses."

Is asking the wealthy to pay a fairer tax rate an example of punishing, penalizing or vilifying success?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

@Paulinusa

he's incapable of coming across as other than someone who just came from the country club or just stepped off his yacht. Fair or not, that's the perception.

As much as I dislike Obama's policies, this will be Romney's undoing. Not that I think he'd be much better anyhow.

I seriously doubt he broke any laws hiding from taxes. Any loopholes he used were laws created and passed by a bipartisan congress. I'm sure he used the same loopholes that both dems and repubs use to hide their wealth. Plenty of Obama's backers are wall street bankers, and I'm sure ol' mitt's got nothing on them when it comes to financial shenanegins.

He's just afraid he'll feed Obama's "The rich don't pay their fair share" myth.

But like you said, a public image strategist he's not.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@Paulinusa: the top 5% pay 65% of all the federal income tax, how much more is fair? 50% of Americans pay NO federal income tax -- now that's not fair. Romney took not shortcuts and he didn't "screw" anybody -- its the capitalist system, if you don't like it, move out of the country.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Obama shot down the Keystone pipeline which would have created 50,000 jobs and then he donated 2 billion tax dollars to Brazil to drill in their country and export to us at much higher prices. So who is demonizing success and job creation, huh?!! But Obama is a great President, please!

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

bass4funk: Again you make statements with nothing to back them up. 50,000 Keystone jobs and donating (?) 2 billion tax dollars to Brazil are myths perpetuated by the right wing echo chamber.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

plasticmonkey: Note the use of the word foreign. The suggestion once again is that Obama is "un-American" because he does not blindly pledge allegiance to the myth that America is an even playing field where all wealth is honestly earned by hard work and without privilege.

The Thomson Reuters article is biased toward Romney. The title says it all that the article is about being anti-Romney. The US mainstream media print and TV is for Obama. The majority of people on JT are for Obama. Many times I don't even read the article instead go right down to comments section. Because the title says it all. Maybe Thomson Reuters want to project that idea to you. It's not like Romney wrote the article himself.

A majority of people know that what you said, "he does not blindly pledge allegiance to the myth that America is an even playing field where all wealth is honestly earned by hard work and without privilege" is not even a myth to begin with. America is the land of opportunity regardless of people background. People come to the country for a better life. Many of those people become small business owners, medium size businesses, or big businesses. There is a tiny percentage that are from old money regardless of being a Democrat or Republican.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

SuperLib: United as always....

There was once a upon a time many Democrats would hold their guy accountable for. That is not the case today.

There is merits when fellow Republicans hold Romney accountable for.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Unless Romney resolves this issue soon and stops hiding his tax returns from the American people, odds  are looking good that conservatives will judge him unelectable even before election day.

The bulk of conservatives never liked or trusted Mitt anyway. His childish behavior on this issue may well show them their instincts were right all along.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

@Paulinusa

Like Obama trying and the right claiming that the unemployment is going down and that the middle class will not have their taxes raised? So again, who is the one demonizing? $500 million to Fisker alone is going to Finland. Solar money going to Mexico. Turbine money going to Denmark. So you have over $30 billion of purchases and wasted money that came out of this administration. All these green energy jobs All outsourced to whom? Foreign Countries!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

It's incredibly funny that the Romney camp can't even keep this month's dismal jobs report in the news cycle for more than a couple of days.

(Q: what's up with his campaign team??? Are they asleep! :-)

Now, we're seeing full on coordinated attacks on MoneyR from the Democrats and the President - even the Republicans are calling for Mitt to release his taxes.

That's just w.o.w.!

With that jobs report, this could have been a huuuugge week for Romney.

Instead he's on the back foot and getting HAMMERED - about a completely different issue - by the Dems AND his own side.

Unbelievable...! And hugely funny. :-)

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

SushiSake3: Now, we're seeing full on coordinated attacks on MoneyR from the Democrats and the President - even the Republicans are calling for Mitt to release his taxes. That's just w.o.w.!

How come the Democrats don't do the same thing in regards to Obama's school transcript? If he score all A's then there shouldn't be a problem, right? Does Obama not want people to see what classes he took?

Both Romney and Obama should disclose those information.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

skip: What relevance does Obama's school transcripts have to this election? Tax returns and personal finances are another matter entirely.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Skipbeat, to be fair, why aren't YOU demanding Mitt release all his home schooling records also?

BTW, I didn't know failing to file or show school records was a fineable offense. .

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Barack Obama is the incumbent in this race. Historically, his lead over an opponent should be huge at this point. Mitt Romney hasn't even been officially nominated as the R. candidate. The Obama campaign, moreover, has spent a staggering 100 million dollar$ in the crucial swing states in the attempt to demonise Mitt Romney and all that has given him no rise in poll numbers.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Then, he slaps Americans around the head by petulantly refusing to release his tax returns.

Mitt is proclaiming to all Americans, "I'm better than you. I hold information you do no need to know. My past actions of hiding my investments in offshore tax havens is none of your business, and yes, I did it to enrich myself and prevent myself from paying taxes in America, the country I patriotically love despite the above."

0 ( +4 / -4 )

On the issue of economic and business, even the left wing mouthpieces CBS/NYT show 49% for Romney and 41% for Obama, the deficit in chef. All signs indicate a very close race this November, even almost split evenly for both. Contrary, JT blog has almost 99% left wing! Just wonder is it U.S.A against China, Russia, N. Korea, Cuba, Venezuela...and most Europeans combined? Well, enjoy your freedom that were not found above mentioned places. Cheers.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@paulinusa: what relevance is there in Romney's tax returns? The IRS did not find anything wrong with them or it would be all over the news. HOWEVER imagine applying for a job and telling your prospective employer (aka the American people) that your college transcripts are none of their business...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Mitt is proclaiming to all Americans, "I'm better than you. I hold information you do no need to know

Most members of Congress withold this information, from what I understand. Senate leader Reid and the other one (Pelosi) refuse to disclose these same documents. My take is that President Obama's people need to keep his all-important (for Americans) numbers from crumbling too soon and this is the only issue they have. It stands to reason after all that since Mr Romney was governor of Massachusetts state until 2007 the issue of his taxes and offshore accounts has come up before.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Obama saved the auto industry, which Romney wanted to let die with 100,000s of job going with it. What Americans do not need is more crony capitalism for which Romney is a the perfect symbol. He destroys jobs while making millions with financial tricks and then hides his profits from taxes for the country he wants to lead. He is worse than pond scum in that regard. Anyone other than the 1% of the 1% who votes for Romney might was well just give their savings to the republicans now cause if he wins they will take that from you. The model they want is the rich and the rest of America to serve them. Figure out where you are or want to be and then vote for your interests, not Romneys. He does not care about you, he has his $1 million horse to worry about in the Summer Olympics. Look it up.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Amazing, considering we're STILL seeing the effects of the economic wreckage left by the last Republican president, Romney should be streets ahead in the polls by now.

He's not.

What's up with him?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@SushiSaki

The problem is transparency or lack of it. Dems cry foul that Mitt doesn't release his tax records, so then why doesn't Obama release his school transcripts, you guys think that is totally irrelevant and honesty it is, wherein Romney keeps his cash is also irrelevant, will it directly or indirectly affect your life, NO. So why bother with it, if you want to be far, then both should show their records, but as I said, it's only fair when liberals call the shots, but when they are on the receiving end..Watch out! Also, Mitt never said, he is better than anyone, but Obama sure made sure that everyone knew he was THE best man in the room. Smarter than Clinton, Smarter than Volcker, smarter than everyone Democrat or Republican. Former Mayor Ray Nagin, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, William Jefferson and many others. Point is, Dems and liberals want you to believe that they are above anything unethical, but that's just a load of..... So the last thing I want to hear is that Dems think that they can take the holy high moral ground, when they obviously can't!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Just think of all the good American jobs that will go to China and India if American conservatives once again vote against their own interests and vote for Romney!

By the way, I hear Mitt is trying to increase his appeal to Joe Six-Pack with a bit of crooning.

His song is 'Homes Sweet Homes.'

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Thank God Mitt has that common man touch!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

paulinusa: skip: What relevance does Obama's school transcripts have to this election? Tax returns and personal finances are another matter entirely.

It's the principle to do the right thing??? .

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Sushisaki

Think of all the good jobs that were sent over to China, not only by Conservatives, take a look at my home state, California, the king of jobs over seas outsourcing, controlled by whom? Ahh, liberals. Also when is your the sainted Obama going to STOP borrowing money from China?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Everything Obama touches politically blows up in his face like an exploding cigar.

For the past week , "The One" has been trying to shame Romney about his tax returns; he alleged that Romney is a felon; and his epic fail was in trying to label Romney as an outsourcer of jobs.

If you think that after all of these lies about Romney Obama would distance Romney in the polls, think again:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57475178-503544/obama-romney-in-dead-heat-in-presidential-race/

To add insult to injury, Romney hasn't even been nominated yet.

RR

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Incredible. Incumbent Obama has gained nothing from all his attacks on what Romeny did back in 1999. Why, it's as if the average American, like Mr Romney, resents paying to a bloated federal government any more than is the least possible.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Summer - "Why, it's as if the average American, like Mr Romney, resents paying to a bloated federal government any more than is the least possible."

How many houses does Mitt own?

The number one reason McCain didn't pick him as Veep....

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Romeo's back! What are you angry and slighted about today? :-)

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Release the tax returns! If you've nothing embarrassing or illegal to hide, why do you allow this very nasty suspicion to keep circulating,

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Of the 535 members in the US Congress last year only 17 released tax returns for public scrutiny.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"Of the 535 members in the US Congress last year only 17 released tax returns for public scrutiny."

Excellent point my man has there.

Now is the time for Mr Romney to show his leadership skills and release those tax returns.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Everything Obama touches politically blows up in his face like an exploding cigar. For the past week , "The One".....

Getting old now. Can't you come up with some new "ewww, that's clever!" material?

You know, like the right-wing hero icon Rush Limbaugh's latest theory that the Bane villain in the Dark Knight rises is Hollywood conspiracy to keep Bain capital in the news? Now that's creative and new!

You guys are right though, enough of this tax records and time at Bane capital errr.... Bain capital . Maybe we should start talking about how he wants to turn back the clock to the Bush years.... the Republican administration that killed the economy.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

President Obama's latest public appearance sans the trusty teleprompter resulted in his biggest, most revealing gaffe to date. Speaking about private enterprise and trying after all these years to make sense of the fact that it is small businesses which have always pulled America out of recessions and depressions the Bungler-in-Chief blurted out that

"If you've got a business - - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

The head of the Democratic Nat'l Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz,(another politician who refuses to release tax returns...), is hard at work trying to minimise damage control. She insists that “It’s absolutely ludicrous to take statements from his speech.” So there you have it. If you voice opposition of this man during or after a speech you are racist. And besides, you shouldn't really take a given statement from one of his speeches ( he gave over 900 his first two years in office) as indicative of what he believes. And of course last week Mr Obama was telling us his only mistake his first three years in office was his messaging.Or something.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Thin Mitts, we still haven't seen those tax returns!!!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

There is no greater crime, then working hard, and having success. At least in Obamas America.

You guys are right though, enough of this tax records and time at Bane capital errr.... Bain capital . Maybe we should start talking about how he wants to turn back the clock to the Bush years.... the Republican administration that killed the economy.

Yes, killed it with the longest period of sustained growth since WW2. It wasn't until the housing bubble collapsed, created thanks largely to Barney Frank and the Dems, and yes some republicans as well, that things took a downturn. Going back to the policies of a few years ago, minus the stupidity of the sub-prime lending so thoughtfully pushed by the Dems, sounds like a very good thing. Indeed, reducing regulations would be a terrific spur to the economy. Considering the past 4 years, of Obamas failed policies, all I can say is, sometimes turning back the clock is how you move forward. We've tried Obamas loony policies. They haven't worked, and in fact, have greatly hurt the economy. Add in Obamacare and other policies that are acting as anchors on the economy and if we throw those out, the economy would greatly recover. I hope to see that happen very soon.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

There is no greater crime than working hard, and having success. At least in Obama's America.

And if Romney's America ever comes to pass (God forbid), then there'll be no greater crime than being poor.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Considering the past 4 years, of Obamas failed policies, all I can say is, sometimes turning back the clock is how you move forward

This isn't one of those times. Cute spin, about as accurate as your "no greater crime" crock, so, as usual, mostly BZ. But knock yourself out, try selling it to the American voter. Maybe it'll work, who knows. Why don't you bring W out to surrogate for Romney and make that case?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

if you have a business, you didn’t build that,”

This comment doesn't bother as much as what he had to say before it.

look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

I rather find that a bit offensive myself.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

And if Romney's America ever comes to pass (God forbid), then there'll be no greater crime than being poor.

And a multitude of additional ways to avoid becoming, or staying poor, as opposed to Obama who so hates the idea of success, he is doing everything he can to penalize it, and indeed, to make it a crime.

This isn't one of those times. Cute spin, about as accurate as your "no greater crime" crock, so, as usual, mostly BZ. But knock yourself out, try selling it to the American voter. Maybe it'll work, who knows. Why don't you bring W out to surrogate for Romney and make that case?

Make the case that Obama has been the most incompent President in recent history? That his policies have been, and are complete failures in helping the economy, that in fact they have hurt it. That his plan results in more government programs we can't afford, and more government regulations to reign in opporutinty and prevent success? No I don't think I need to make that case, Obama has been doing a damn good job of it all by himself. Although his partisans do everything they can to convince us that its good to hurt the economy, and that raising taxes is a good thing. Sorry, but only an idiot would believe that.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

This is the American President ?

Vilifying success and achievement as non-special and undeserved, to a cheering mob?

This is shocking.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

“if you have a business, you didn’t build that,” a comment about how companies cannot succeed alone but also need public services like roads and bridges.

Obama loves to tout all the "wonderful" things government has done for us. What he fails to mention is that all of that is funded by us taxpayers. The very people Obama demonizes daily. We built the infrastructure he's giving himself credit for.

RR

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Make the case that Obama has been the most incompent President in recent history?

If, by recent history, you mean since after George W....

That his policies have been, and are complete failures in helping the economy, that in fact they have hurt it. That his plan results in more government programs we can't afford, and more government regulations to reign in opporutinty and prevent success? No I don't think I need to make that case,

I understand that its by repeating the standard story line long and forcefully enough is how you sell it as the truth but, fact is, you may be able to sell it that way but it doesn't really make it so. So, yeah, you bloody well do have a case to make to the American voter.

Obama has been doing a damn good job of it all by himself. Although his partisans do everything they can to convince us that its good to hurt the economy, and that raising taxes is a good thing. Sorry, but only an idiot would believe that.

You mean took us off the path to full economic melt-down quaint legacy of his incompetent predecessor? Yeah. Thankfully we didn't get McCain Palin to finish us off.

To get Romney elected you really have to hope that there are enough "idiots" out there to buy the talking points you're repeating. Fret not though, there's hope. George Bush got re-elected despite being the most incompetent President since... pick any date you like. So obviously gullibility varies over time. And, even better, there's no shortage of m...billionaires eager to buy... er... bankroll the version of reality right-wingers absorb unquestioningly.

But try selling to the American voter that the Bush years were great, and didn't put us in the hole that is taking us years (no small tip of the hat to the GOP for that btw) to dig us out of... and bring old George out to do it...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

We learned here in the States today that Obama's Jobs Council has not met in the past six months:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/07/18/carney_on_why_jobs_council_hasnt_met_in_six_months_obama_has_a_lot_on_his_plate.html

Too many other things on his plate to make room for the economy? Great answer Carney! Important things to Obama: Attending more than 100 fundraisers and playing Lord knows how many rounds of golf in that time. Figuring out a way to get Americans back to work?: Not so much. Since Obama's lapdogs in the msm won't report on this I look forward to seeing how Romney's TV ads will respond to this revelation.

RR

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Romeny's just trying to get traction on what he hopes is his selling point: he knows business.

Sure, he knows how to make money. But that ain't business; that's finance capitalism. And that is why Team Obama's attacks on his Bain record are working.

Another thing: yesterday's bombing in Syria is bad news for Romney, 'cause Romney has Romney has no foreign-policy experience.

Obama can and will continually reming Americans of that salient fact. And argue that he has wisdom needed to be Commander-in-Chief. He knows when to actively intervene in foreign affairs (killing bin Laden) and when to work behind the scenes (Egypt, Libya, and Syria).

Poor poor Romney. They only way he can win this election is if the Republican Party gets want they want and tank the American Economy.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Romney accuses Obama of demonizing business success

...says the man who wants to make damn sure no one sees his tax returns....

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@SuperLib: I'll say it again. What's the relevance of seeing Romney's tax returns -- he paid his taxes and if there had been a problem the IRS would have been all over it. On the other hand, lets see Obama's college transcripts -- that't relevant. Can you image applying for a job and telling a prospective employer that your college transcripts are none of their business -- what makes Obama exempt from doing what we all had to do in order to get a job?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

For more than a decade, Romney has been putting himself forward as a public figure worthy of occupying high office, not merely a private citizen. The real issue is how you could be campaigning for literally seven years and still fail to address this issue in an appropriate way. This is politics: "retroactively retired" and "he's done all that's legally required" aren't going to cut it. Problem is, I don't think Romny has it in him to take these issues head on. The fact that he is willing to endure this blistering storm of criticism and speculation means that there is probably a very good reason why he does not want to release them.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

“if you have a business, you didn’t build that”

There is apparently an attempt by the Left to claim that what Obuma really meant is that business people did not build the roads and bridges that they share with the rest of the country. Even if looked at this way it is still plainly false. The government doesn't exist in a vacuum. Citizens pay the money that the government uses to build roads and bridges. Most of that money comes from the taxes paid by hard working small business people and their employees. Every government job comes at the expense of one or more jobs in the private sector that is paying taxes (government employees simply recycle tax money).

Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.

If you take just the sentence right before - the "you didn't build that" statement, this doesn't illustrate the full context of what Obama believes. He sees government as a more important factor in economics than entrepreneurs and the ingenuity, hard work, and ability to seize opportunities of business people. It is the individual initiative of risk takers that create wealth that the government can tax for the benefit of society overall. Obama doesn't understand that and this ideological blind spot is why unemployment remains high and the economy is stagnant. He doesn't understand economics and he doesn't appreciate what business people do for his own country.

I think last Friday the 13th puts Obama's ideology in the clearest terms that we have seen. Everyone knows that he is a collectivist (ie. Socialist). He must not have been using his teleprompter because I think he slipped up with this telling comment about his "foreign" and un-American political ideology.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Its pretty clear to any objective mind what Obama was saying by the comment, ridiculous attempts to spin it is as something else aside...

....with this telling comment about his "foreign" and un-American political

Clearly, the last line is what this is about, painting Obama as "foreign", not one of us, un-American. Along with Sununu's "accidental" comment, . Just skirting that line along "dog-whistle" politics. Nice.. Congrats on staying on message there. Just don't think nobody's noticed.

Great entire post, Wolfpack.
