Every major news outlet is saying that in the swing states Obama's lead is below 5% - in other words in the range of the error of the poll. And, as the "Economist" points out, state by state polls are more error prone.

Especially when they over-sample Democrats. From the article I linked in my previous post:

"In fact, in ARG's poll of Ohio today, Dems are sampled at +9% over Republicans, but Romney wins indies by 20%, which is enough to inch ahead, overall, 48%-47%."

As many have said, it will be the independents who decide this election. And Romney is seeing significant gains among independents:

a. IBD/ITP poll released today: Romney 52% Obama 34%.

b. Pew poll, released yesterday: Romney 46% Obama 42%.

c. Politico/GW poll, released yesterday: Romney 51% Obama 35%.

d. CNN, released last week: Romney 49% Obama 41%.

e. National Journal, released October 3: Romney 49% Obama 41%.

This election is over for those who are keeping count of the electorial college votes...

Really? Every major news outlet is saying that in the swing states Obama's lead is below 5% - in other words in the range of the error of the poll. And, as the "Economist" points out, state by state polls are more error prone. This election isn't over at all. All that's left is for Obama and Biden to make a couple more poor showings in the next two debates and then it will be down to the wire.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Serrano, well this in no way parallels the Bush sr. Vs Dukakis vote. However there is one thing, both Dukakis and Romney are and were govener of Massachutes.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The sad fact is Obama and Biden could both implode during the final debates....

Debates? How can you debate a Chimera? Serrano, please tell me if you can what - specifically - Romney would do as president. There is no "there" there - not anymore.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The sad fact is Obama and Biden could both implode during the final debates, and Obama could STILL win on his charisma.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"This election is over... Obama won this thing last month"

Heh, you're probably too young to remember that Michael Dukakis had a big lead over George Bush Sr before Bush trounced him, and there was no election last month, but there will be after another 3 debates including the Ryan-Biden debate, hee hee!

Obama has promised to keep Big Bird, so I'm voting for him.

Obama should do something about outsourcing Sesame Street Toys to China then (your tax dollars at work funding PBS).

New Sesame Street doll is made in Chinese sweatshop - labor report

A new Ernie-themed toy is being manufactured by underaged Chinese workers laboring under horrid conditions for pennies an hour, a new report alleges.

This election is over for those who are keeping count of the electorial college votes. Obama won this thing last month. The popular vote will dance all the way to the November vote, but it doesnt matter. Romney can't even catch a cold, much less Obama in the polls that count. It is over, and politics really is a boring thing. lets get used to it and move on people, there's nothing to see here, never mind the infernal carnage Romney wreckage on the sidelane there, trying to pass as having any kind of chance. Don't mind him, he's just spending money, and thats good for somebody, who I don't know, but somebody; anyways, it's over. Peace

@bass (re: 11:49 P, JST post) Obscene amounts of money? What about RMONEY? And I refer ONLY to the amounts we know of . . those not in the Caymans, etc.

Also, and I do admit to hearing Jon Stewart say this, why is it when one takes every tax break available, uses all the loopholes, and stashes money in foreign accounts, one is conwsidered a "shrewd" businessman, but if one takes advantage of federal programs in times of need, one is a "moocher"? This is not nescessarily addressed to you personally, I'm just putting it out there, OK?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I'm always curious to read what ex-pats think about the ekection and politics in general. After all, we sort of get a different viewpoint from the other side of the Pacific. I'm fortunate to split my time between both countries each month so I find the whole thing interesting. I'm generally surprised to find Americans so polarized. Republicans are way too conservative and Democrats way too liberal and both try desperately to turn their candidates into such while both Obama and Romney are really both moderates. Romney probably isn't as bad as Democrats make him out to be but he comes off as a complete liar because he keeps trying to kiss up to his possible voters. His health insurance plan worked wonders for Massachusetts but he can't brag about it because it looks too much like President Obama's plan. He flip flops on everything simply because he has to adhere to the super conservatives in order to get elected. I would personally be surprised if he was elected, only because the status quo is way too extreme for America. Sort of like America's version of the Taliban or something.

Go Mitt! End of the financial markets if Obama retains power - way too much regulation. Save Wall Street - Vote Romney!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

You're paying attention, Sailwind! Can you say "austerity"? These are the policies Romney would emulate.

Can you say "green jobs"? These are the Spanish policies that Obama has already emulated and he's getting exactly the Spanish results.

Job Losses From Obama Green Stimulus Foreseen in Spanish Study

Subsidizing renewable energy in the U.S. may destroy two jobs for every one created if Spain’s experience with windmills and solar farms is any guide.

For every new position that depends on energy price supports, at least 2.2 jobs in other industries will disappear, according to a study from King Juan Carlos University in Madrid.

The premiums paid for solar, biomass, wave and wind power - - which are charged to consumers in their bills -- translated into a $774,000 cost for each Spanish “green job” created since 2000, said Gabriel Calzada, an economics professor at the university and author of the report.

"Hopefully Obama grows some balls"

And this from an Obama supporter! My oh my...

"Are the polls to be trusted?"

Not these polls, I mean, really, how could Romney have pulled even with Barack Obama?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Are the polls to be trusted?

You're paying attention, Sailwind! Can you say "austerity"? These are the policies Romney would emulate.

Again, an unfortunate choice it was.

@bass

I meant government funding. I can't envisage even Mitt demanding that ptivate citizens stop funding PBS.

I guess this is a pretty good example of how we view the world differently. As a European lefty liberal, I'd hope that any government would be sure to provide high-quality, informative TV and radio programmes to the population paid for by taxes. People on the right, your good self included, resent any government spending you see as non-essential and any interference in the lives of the people (whether well-intentioned or otherwise).

It's not really an issue that be argued over in terms of facts, it's just opinions. Peace :)

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Romney made the unfortunate choice of Spain as a whipping boy in the debate ("I don't want to go down the path of Spain. I want to go down the path of growth that puts Americans to work.")

In Spain, 5.69 million people ended the second quarter jobless, raising the unemployment rate to a record 24.6 percent, according to the latest national employment statistics published Friday. That compared with 24.4 percent in the first quarter,

Youth unemployment rose to 53 percent in the second quarter, up 1.3 percentage points from the previous quarter and 7 percentage points from a year ago.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Funny to see the GOP all in a tizzy, intoxicated with visions of victory, over a guy who they really don't trust - especially as victory will most likely not pan out.

Romney made the unfortunate choice of Spain as a whipping boy in the debate ("I don't want to go down the path of Spain. I want to go down the path of growth that puts Americans to work.") - unfortunate because it is not only untrue (like the US, Spain has a relatively low debt-to-GNP ratio) but because it illuminates how economic uncertainties are not limited to the US and are not the result of Obama's presidency.

People are unhappy and are venting their unhappiness in polls. Something shiny and new is attractive when conversing with strangers. Romney's policies (such as they have been implied) would have a disastrous effect on the American middle class, and when the majority of Americans enter the voting booth, their votes will reflect this.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The Lesser of Two Evils.......that is the choice.

Privately funded, they will do just fine

Kids on today's Sesame Street, the letter C brought to you by Coca Cola.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@luca

Yes, Mitt. When times are tough, best to start by cutting the minuscule budget of a TV programme that actually tries to teach kids to read.

He meant GOVERNMENT funding for PBS, NO, it's NOT needed. Privately funded, they will do just fine.

OldHawk: You are confusing the liberal posters on JT with facts -- tone it down or they will have a Chris Matthews meltdown. We can save the "we told you so, but you weren't listening" moment for November 7th posts...

Big Bird is a mulit-millionaire. Hello Kitty is a billionaire.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Glad you got that post.

PBS Subsidiaries already solicits money from private donors, but some PBS subsidiaries are located in rural or poor areas where they can't get enough funds to sustain their operations. PBS "may" survive, but it won't be the same without public funding and it turn into another NHK.

Then if the poor areas can't afford it, then how about passing those that can't. Beats soliciting from them. Then the people that can and want to privately pay for them can take over to fund it. I'm all for it. This is a good start. Or better yet, let Obama and the Hollywood crowd pay for it since they have obscene amounts of money at their disposal.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Romney replied in Iowa that these “are tough times, with real serious issues. So you have to scratch your head when the president spends the last week talking about saving Big Bird.”

Yes, Mitt. When times are tough, best to start by cutting the minuscule budget of a TV programme that actually tries to teach kids to read. Of course, big business doesn't need an educated workforce, it just needs mindless drones to do what they're told without complaining. Romney's vision for the future becomes a little clearer.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Mirai Hayashi:

So why even cut it then...it makes no sense!

Ummmm... principle? Because it can survive on its own? Because we don't need to borrow money from China to support it? Because the actor/actress who plays Big Bird makes $314,000 a year?

Pick one.

From the Financial Times:

Mitt Romney has released details of 20 years’ worth of tax payments in an effort to rebut claims of secrecy over his personal income and steady his stuttering presidential bid after weeks of campaign mishaps.

The Republican presidential candidate also released his full tax return for 2011, which showed that he voluntarily paid more tax than required by reducing allowable deductions for charitable contributions.

Mr Romney had previously refused to go beyond his promise to release two years of full tax returns, a limit which Mr Obama had used to portray him as rich and out of touch.

The Republican’s 2011 tax return showed that the candidate – and his wife, Ann – paid $1.9m in taxes on $13.7m in income, derived mostly from investments. That put their effective tax rate at 14.1 per cent, according to a blog post by Brad Malt, the trustee who manages Mr Romney’s wealth.

The Romneys donated $4m to charity last year, nearly 30 per cent of their income but claimed a tax deduction for only $2.25m of this, pushing the candidate’s effective tax rate higher.

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/8fc4288e-03f9-11e2-b91b-00144feabdc0.html#axzz279mkq1ib

For comparison, the Romneys gave over 1,000 times more to charity in one year than Joe Biden gave over the last fifteen years. Want to compare any others?

And Mirai, here's another memo, straight from Stephanie Cutter:

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2012/10/06/cutter_okay_fine_weve_been_lying_about_romneys_tax_plan

I realize you're not defending Obama (because you can't) so much as you're attacking Romney, but try keeping with the changing talking points, okay? ;)

1 ( +3 / -2 )

They BOTH embrace your so called "socialist agenda" except one side believes in funding services we need such as SS, Medicare, Universal health care, unemployment, welfare...and the other favors subsidies for rich oil corporations, tax cuts for the rich, and corporate welfare at the tune of $5T over the next ten years.

Mirai, remember when you laughed at my $900T typo (when I meant to type $900B) the other day? Well here you are, still bleating the "$5T Romney tax cut" talking point. Did you not get the memo?

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/princeton-economist-obama-campaign-misrepresenting-my-study-romneys-tax-plan_653917.html

Let's see...

AARP tells the Obama campaign to stop referencing them in their campaign ads...

PBS tells the Obama campaign to stop referencing Big Bird in their campaign ads...

Princeton economist says the Obama campaign is lying about his study...

Nobody wants on the Obama campaign bus!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

So cutting funding for PBS is not going to make a difference

So why even cut it then...it makes no sense! PBS is powered on $445M per YEAR. At the same time, extending Bush tax cuts (which Romney will do) costs us $1T over the next 10 years. That's about $100B a year enough to run PBS for 225 years! In other words, if you end the Bush tax cuts for 1 YEAR, and you can fund PBS for 225 YEARS...that's how minute their budget is (in the grand scheme of things) and how ridiculous this plan is.

PBS will survive and they should solicit private donors and why not, they will do fine.

PBS Subsidiaries already solicits money from private donors, but some PBS subsidiaries are located in rural or poor areas where they can't get enough funds to sustain their operations. PBS "may" survive, but it won't be the same without public funding and it turn into another NHK.

one embraces socialist agendas and big government

They BOTH embrace your so called "socialist agenda" except one side believes in funding services we need such as SS, Medicare, Universal health care, unemployment, welfare...and the other favors subsidies for rich oil corporations, tax cuts for the rich, and corporate welfare at the tune of $5T over the next ten years.

Romney in September (This was less than a month ago, not last year):

"I hope to appoint justices for the Supreme Court that will follow the law and the constitution," he said at the time on NBC's "Meet the Press." "And it would be my preference that they reverse Roe V. Wade and therefore they return to the people and their elected representatives the decisions with regards to this important issue."

Romney (Today):

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.

Not Only that, Of course Obama wants us to trust him, that's why he wants a second term, but as it has been, most Americans see that they can't and are losing trust in Obama.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Obama said, "trust me" and he's the President of the US!!!!

Perhaps I'm naive, but I don't think either candidate is deliberately going around trying to screw up the economy. Obama and Romney have different ideas about how to get the economy back on track, and it is the voters job to choose which plan they think will work the best.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Mirai

Romney also said "trust me"...so I guess we should trust him, because I'm sure he never lies ..(except when he opens his mouth)

Obama said, "trust me" and he's the President of the US!!!! Look what he did the last 4 years and now he's asking us to trust him again??! The man that believes that, we are economically headed in the right direction?? Obama didn't lie? Romney is NOT even President and you give Obama as pass?? That's the problem with Obama, he can't shut his big mouth. Less talk, more governing. That's why he shut down the other day, he was never spoken to that way by anyone and it needed to be said to wake his inflated EGO up!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Tithing to the Mormon church is obligatory for believers. If you deduct the amount from Mormon-related charities, the total that Romney donated, then the above statement does not hold true.

Harry Reid is also a Mormon. So what percent of his income has he paid to charity minus the obligatory 10% tithe?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Mirai

My mom always told me when people resort to using profanity, it means that people lack the verbal skills to properly communicate. Actually, the 30% is wrong, but regardless, it is a significant chunk and as many of the documents have shown that he gave a huge amount to charitable causes. Compare that to Liberals that historically give less to nothing, cheap as many of them are. But again, as long as it's someone else's money, who cares, right?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

@SquidBert

2010 and 2011

Ryan only released 1 year.

The campaign office also released a statement in which they promised that Mitt had been a good boy during the last 20 years

Romney also said "trust me"...so I guess we should trust him, because I'm sure he never lies ..(except when he opens his mouth)

0 ( +3 / -3 )

@Mirai

Ouch! ROFL

recycling now? Ah, sorry, but NO. Not recycling, just the straight facts. You are saying Obama can go up against Romney and defend his economical record? Are you absolutely insane?! I'm sorry, but if you think that Blacks and Hispanics are going great under Obama then I really hate to burst your bubble, but it's time to wake up. Yea, I know Liberals want to live in the land of Oz and make believe, but the reality is, minorities in particular are suffering more under this President.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

So regarding the tax records,

From what I could find. Romney released records from 2009? and forwards?. The campaign office also released a statement in which they promised that Mitt had been a good boy during the last 20 years. But no 20 years of tax records as far as I can find.

(But hey, I am using google with left wing safe search enabled)

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@Bass

Romney paid less than 30% of his income to charity. Plus, you've got to also understand that this is a VERY small fraction of his total known wealth $250M. $2.6M went to LDS in 2011. Probably much smaller fraction if you include his money in hidden accounts (that he pays no taxes on) overseas.

@Mirai

I'm not worried...its a knee-jerk reaction to mediocre debate performance. If the low information voters knew jists of what Romney was debating, they wouldn't be polling in his favor. Hopefully Obama grows some balls and calls him out on his lies and flips flops next time.

I don't think so. Remember, Obama is NOT allowed to use his teleprompter at the debate. Therefore, he can neither spin, nor flip, nor flop. Yea, he'll probably go after Romney and the 47% remark and that he doesn't care and so on.... Then what? Obama wants to brag about his economical record? High taxes, inflation, high gas prices, $16T and climbing debt. 7.8% unemployment rate (rofl, yeah, right) increased welfare recipients, disability up 19%, Blacks and Hispanics hovering over 14.4% and 11% between the two. If I were Obama, I would be so proud and of course, I won't have to worry about anything. "Obama, get that Romney!" ROFL! :-)

That tax rate is for investment income, which is money you already pay income taxes on when paid. To jack up the investment income tax rate would make everyone's 401k, IRA, or other stock market investments less profitable.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

2011...substantially less than most of us.

But paid last year about 4 million in taxes and 40% of his income to charitable causes. Substantially more than the rest of us.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

@bass4funk

Again, recycling old irrelevant points (i.e. teleprompter) and dismissing valid points that really matter (7.8%, 20% ->47% -> 100%).

Since we are rehashing old and totally unfunny GOP jokes from the dinosaur era, perhaps Romney is the one who really needs the teleprompter so that he remembers what side of the issues he's suppose to be on (ie. Not remembering that his own health care plan eliminates pre existing conditions, yet saying that it covers it, on national television)

As John Stewart would say "only on Bullsh!t Mountain". Population: Y-O-U

In the real world, Romney only released 2 years and paid 13.9% in 2010 and 14.1% in 2011...substantially less than most of us.

So? Even if you're correct (and since some multimillionaire Democrat candidates never gave anything until they ran for president, I reserve the right to doubt your statement), he's still been more generous than any single Democrat president, vice-president, or candidate of the last 20 years.

Downside: MAYHEM and DESTRUCTION on the streets as vile Republican cronies vacuum what little is left of the US treasury.

This is pretty much inevitable, regardless of who wins and does what.

Who's kidding whom? Obama and Romney are both sides of the same coin. That coin which swells the size and power of government at the expense of fools like us.

We are all doomed. DOOMED I say!

Indeed. Remember the manufactured "tax records" outrage? Harry Reid even accused Romney of not paying taxes for ten years. The flood gates are opening, at long last.

THIS is the reason Mitt Romney has been getting bad press from the left, from the beginning.

The left-leaning press wanted people to believe the worst, of Mitt Romney.

They knew WHEN the American people got a whiff of what this man has to offer, it would not bode well for the incumbent. They wasted no time in attempting to discredit him.

But you can't keep a good man down.

People are starting to realize that the new "normal" is not only unacceptable, but unnecessary.

Speaking of low information...

Love seeing Obama supporters/defenders claiming Romney flip-flops and lies. Has Romney ever tried to work up a crowd by telling them that the federal government won't help them because of their race? That the federal government wouldn't waive the Stafford Act to help them out, like it did New York after 9/11 and Florida after Hurricane Andrew? Not only did Obama do exactly that, but he did it two weeks after Capitol Hill did vote to waive the Stafford Act for New Orleans, and Obama was one of the senators who voted against it.

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/329756/phony-chief-thomas-sowell

Romney has changed or adjusted his positions on a few issues from when he was governor of an overwhelmingly Leftist state. But Obama is an antagonist. A divider. A liar. Remember, that's your candidate.
