Putin has argued that the constitutional amendments are intended to strengthen democracy, but Kremlin foes have charged that they are aimed at allowing him lifelong rule.

Pretty hard to believe a hard core authoritarian like Putin wants to 'strengthen democracy'. Historically Russians have had only brief exposures to something akin to 'western' democracy. Putin knows Russians admire Stalin and the strongest of the tsars who came before him. Some say Putin's the richest man in the world (off government 'service'). I can't imagine a big brother as big as Putin ever being willing to give up his authority and perhaps his riches. Unless someone even more ruthless than him can emerge.

He must surpass Josef Stalin being the longest leader in Kremilin! And he kills people far less than uncle Joe....so he will be the greatest one in the history of Russia!

A constitution shouldn't be so easy to modify.

Putin wants to be leader for life, just like Xi.

As the REAL American president so long as Trump is in office? There's Nothing secret about it. The GOP loves and worships this guy, and is making the US more and more his nation with their daily actions.

"And he kills people far less than uncle Joe . . ."

Yeah, but he also kills his enemies in foreign countries with radioactive crap (chemical weapons), so that sets him apart from uncle Joe.

I'm sure he'll continue his partnership with Donnie. There's always more Casinos and resorts to be built.

I could also see them partnering up to sell "election interference strategies"...

It's about time Putin came out of the closet more to the point. Maybe it will calm his short-man aggression issues.

Everyone knows he's only leaving the Kremlin feet first...

Why be secretive - everybody knows he's gonna be re-elected anyway whatever it is

The true test of a mature democracy is in the peaceful handover of power, especially if to an opposition
