It doesn’t make any difference what kruschev happened to be drinking that day. The USSR officially transferred Crimea to Ukraine in 1954…officially.

More than 14,000 people have been killed in nearly eight years of fighting between the Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces.

And if they invade Ukraine again it could become another Chechnya for them. Not to mention they've been intervening in Kazakhstan recently. They may be stretching themselves too thin.

People are ignoring that the NATO backed regime it installed in Ukraine is the reason that the US refused to vote in favor of the UN resolutions condemning Nazism.

That is what so many comments are endorsing.

Just look at all the far-right, so-called conservative Trump supporters here side with Russia over Ukraine...and the US....

You should read up on the history of the situation, instead going into simplistic US party politics rant.

Crimea has always been Russian territory and was gifted to Ukrain by Chrushtchew in a moment of drunken stupor. The population has always been ethnic Russian, and it is home to the only warm water port of the Russia navy --- trying to grab that away is part of US warmongering, just like the infamous "Maidan" insurrection.

And "the bear" is not meddling internationally in sorts of places where it does not belong, like the US and Nato.

Btw, I don't think the Russians could take Ukraine. Not this time. Russian forces would be bogged down and bled white trying. It would be the end of Vladimir Putin and probably lead to a major upheaval within Russia.

I think it is mostly a negotiating ploy to see if NATO will yield to any of his demands. Yesterday the Russians said they could deploy forces to Venezuela or Cuba if NATO doesn't agree to their terms which tells me they are looking for a face saving way out of the hole they have dug. But honestly I think a US deployment of air power to Poland and Romania followed by a clearly stated threat to use it if Russia invaded Ukraine would end the threat for all time. No ground troops, just air power. Russia doesn't want to fight US forces directly and especially US air power. They saw what happened on 7 February 2018 at a Conoco gas plant near Dier ez-Zor Syria. They also remember Desert Storm and the Bekaa Valley.

You make some valid points. You're right about Russia's eyes being bigger than it's belly. Are they ready to create so much havoc and animosity on so many of its borders simultaneously? The only thing that seems to make sense is that Putin is bluffing. And you're right about Ukraine. If Putin does invade there, he might win but at what cost in blood and treasure? And would it be worth it? Maybe it's just a big bluff and a game of chicken created for the sake of getting something for nothing at the negotiation table.

Your right, NATO should show its peaceful intentions like Russia is by massing a couple of hundred thousand troops in Latvia and Estonia on Russia's border. See how Russia likes that.

Russia has already had it's answer from NATO. It will not change. If Russia deploys missiles in Cuba you can be assure that the US and NATO will put them in Ukraine, right on the border with Russia.

I think if Russia does invade Ukraine it will discover the Bear's eyes were bigger than its belly. The Ukraine military of today is not the same military the Russians surprised in 2014. They are better trained and better equipped. The US and Canadian armies have been training Ukrainian ground forces in far western Ukraine for several years now, the US and other NATO allies train with their air force and the Turks have been selling them their combat proven drones, the same drones that were so good at destroying Russian air defense systems in eastern Libya. One has to ask how long the current regime in Moscow could last in the face of a military stalemate and thousands of Russia's sons and daughters coming home in body bags.

That's a pretty dodgy-looking group of politicians.

Russia is forcing currently neutral Sweden and Finland to seriously consider formally joining NATO.

It is revealing that the US considers it unreasonable for Russia to request guarantees about what NATO plans to do in Ukraine, and unreasonable for Russia to do exactly what NATO is refusing to rule out in Cuba and/or Venezuela.

Exit: Brezhnev doctrine.

Enter: Putin doctrine.
