Pussy Riot jailed, the artist who painted Putin in a negligee arrested, homosexuality discouraged because otherwise people wouldn't get married and have babies. Er.....what?

Russia wanted to avoid encouraging homosexuality in order to bolster the birthrate.

“I do not know why we have to apologize in front of Westerners. The preaching tone that they adopted in this area does not suit us.”

Golly, it sounds like it suits y'all just fine.

Same-sex marriages do not produce children

The couple can adopt, or support nieces and nephews etc, thus ensuring the children have a good future.

“Russia and European countries have a big problem, the birth rate is low, Europeans are dying out. Same-sex marriages do not produce children,” Putin said at a meeting of the Valdai discussion club.

Valdai? A comedy show and Putin the central comedian? No, really, first I didn't know whether I should laugh or cringe. For an educated, powerful man leading a large nation this is not a European statement. It's a statement from someone who lost something along the way to the top.

@ControlFreak

And just 40 years a law against "homosexual propaganda" might have passed in any western country.

Yes. 40 years ago.

Really? Since when did Russia have a problem with a declining birthrate? Last I checked Russians were quite onery in bed. Ah... must be the constant use of birth control that may be causing that. The women don't want kids, and the guys don't want to commit?

Yes, yes. Stephen Fry is clearly one of the most dangerous people in the world!

LOL. :)

Irrational, primitive hate for sub-groups. Its not restricted to gays and its not restricted to Russia.

And just 40 years a law against "homosexual propaganda" might have passed in any western country.

So my advice is slow your roll before you get all nationalistic about this stupidity and start boasting about how your country is firmly in modernity.

“Russia and European countries have a big problem, the birth rate is low, Europeans are dying out. Same-sex marriages do not produce children,” Putin said at a meeting of the Valdai discussion club.

It is amazing how people who are so completely out of touch with reality can rise so high.

Through this sort of trickery, he thinks he will get enough gays to marry and breed that he thinks the birthrate will rise by even one percentage point?

Of course I guess there is a chance he does not believe that at all and is only pandering to the stoopids.

Oh, one more thing:

What do the Russians, the Taliban and the Republicans have in common?

They all all hate teh gays.

Well apparently somebody doesn't like QI. I find him to be a wholly entertaining and interesting media personality. If I can find him as such being the religious, black-hearted capitalist that I am, Milonov and Russian politicians in general need to develop a sense of humor.

The couple can adopt, or support nieces and nephews etc, thus ensuring the children have a good future.

Right now they're scrambling to find any way to bring up their abysmal replacement rate. It's not about children having good futures, its about having children at all. Between the mass emigration, the overseas adoption of Russian children, poor birth rates, and even poorer life expectancy President Putin's country is in a real bind. The only western nations with a positive replacement rate, to my knowledge, are the US, France, and Ireland.

I doubt forcing homosexuals to have heterosexual intercourse would impact the situation but the Russian government doesn't really have that many ideas so it's running with what its got; no gays, less alcoholism, more babies. Great campaign slogan. PUTIN 20... FOREVER!

Well, when this guy faces the dirt nap he better hope there really isn't a god because he won't be going to heaven where you can't make a buck of press release. The fact that so many religions and people interpret 'god' differently is proof that it is merely misplaced belief. Now, I'm not saying belief in god or gods is bad at all, but putting down others because they don't adhere to your simplistic view of it IS. No different from Shariah Law. This guy is the type of guy who's own kid later comes out as being gay and becomes a dear-in-headlights sensation like Dick Cheney.

So let's just 'thank god' there isn't one, and that people are people, and let's celebrate our differences and respect our life choices. You want to believe in something, believe in your fellow human, even if their beliefs do not coincide with yours.

@taiko666

Yes. 40 years ago.

And just 10 years ago gays were not allowed in the U.S. military.

I would not get all smug that the last 40 years of thousands of years of persecution could not reverse itself overnight. We should not get all smug with the Russians about this. They are wrong to be sure, but we really don't have a single leg to stand on to be all self-righteous on the issue.

Mr Milonov is quite clearly homosexual and in denial.

He needs therapy and a big, warm hug.

presto Valdai? A comedy show and Putin the central comedian?

Sorry - try to compare Abe (as world leader)

Putin (as world leader)

sad story

You know, no one in Russia cares whether it was a "european statement" or not. Trust me. Besides, politically Russia is not a part of Europe. Most of Russian people strongly dislike your "true european" LGBT affairs.

Extra Virgin Palm Oil

"Ninety-five percent of Russians are against gay marriage. Gays do not have any support in Russian society." --Well, there's your problem.

We (Russians ) have no problem here - thank you so much !

Stephen Fry should feel at home with the pompous, stubborn windbags.
