Russia's FDI fell 45% this year, whilst China continues to be aggressive on outbound investments (Europe 36.7, Australia 33.3 bil, Sub-Saharan 31 bil, US 22.9)

It's surprising that from 2005- June 2010 China's investment to Russia has only generated 5.9 bil-- it's time to change and for both Russia and China to be aggressive on pure commercial relations.

Chinese business entities will be very pleased indeed!

Russia is a hard place with hard people and they can bite

I totally agree. Russia is a force to be reckoned with.

they deserve each other, let the games begin

China is playing with fire on all sides now but playing with Russia is may be a little more than they bargain form.

Russia is a hard place with hard people and they can bite and as @nandakandamanda they can and probably will turn it off and on as they wish if they are not happy.

And China will have to take it because those Russian winters and patience even with today's technology will still rip apart an army.

Russia and China look all tough beating up on Japan, but look at them, they can't even do a deal with each other because they are so paranoid and greedy.

Klein2, they just did a deal. One of many.

"Then Russia can turn the taps up and down and control China, just like they control Europe's energy needs. Imagine having your gas cut off in mid-winter. This is what Russia has done to Ukraine and large sections of Europe."

Shhh. I was kind of hoping Russia would try this with China. I wanted to see what would happen.

Actually, I was thinking that some pipeline through Mongolia or through the desert would be a tasty terror target. I think that both countries know this, so they won't do it. Obviously Russia and China are trying to push some buttons and make Japan twitch.

I have said over and over again that Russia needs to make some friends, and now I guess I can say the same for China. You know, when you go around cutting and cutting people, eventually nobody will have anything to do with you. Russia and China look all tough beating up on Japan, but look at them, they can't even do a deal with each other because they are so paranoid and greedy. I hope they keep negotiating because they certainly deserve each other.

How can you call it "winning" by humiliating Japan if all you wind up doing is limiting your opportunities?

Wait till they are connected up and the gas starts flowing.

Then Russia can turn the taps up and down and control China, just like they control Europe's energy needs. Imagine having your gas cut off in mid-winter. This is what Russia has done to Ukraine and large sections of Europe.

Russia wants to supply gas at the same price as for Europe, but China wants to pay less than 1/3 of it. So, it's just talking and nothing will happen in the foreseeable future unless hot war between US and China flares up and LNG supplies from Gulf is cut off.

Dueling monopolies.

Just like China supplies all of Japan's rare earth needs.
