Russian attacks on DIY store, city center in Ukraine's Kharkiv kill four, injure dozens

Russian strikes on a crowded DIY hardware store and a residential area in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Saturday killed at least four people and injured dozens, local officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an impassioned plea to Ukraine's Western allies to help boost air defenses to keep the country's cities safe.

Four people were killed after two guided bombs hit the DIY hypermarket in a residential area of the city, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said on national television.

At least two of the dead were store employees. Forty people were injured in the attack and 16 still unaccounted for, Syniehubov said.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said about 120 people had been in the hardware store when the bombs struck.

"The attack targeted the shopping centre, where there were many people - this is clearly terrorism," Terekhov said.

An early evening missile strike hit a residential building in the centre of the city of 1.3 million, injuring 18 people, Syniehubov said.

The missile left a crater several metres deep in the pavement at the foot of the building, which also housed a post office, a beauty salon and a cafe.

Emergency workers ushered away residents of nearby apartment buildings. Some of the injured had blood on their faces.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, is just 30 kilometers from the Russian border and has been the target of Russian attacks for weeks. This month, Russian troops also staged an incursion into northern areas of Kharkiv Region.

Andriy Kudinov, director of the suburban shopping centre, told local media the hardware store was full of shoppers buying items for their summer cottages.

Huge clouds of dark smoke billowed into the sky over the shopping centre. Firefighters battled many small blazes. Within 90 minutes, most were brought under control.

Rescuers, medics and journalists rushed away from the scene of both strikes and lay on their stomachs, fearing a second strike - a common feature of Russia's recent attacks.

Witnesses described panicked scenes at the shopping centre.

"I was at my workplace. I heard the first hit and ... with my colleague, we fell to the ground. There was the second hit and we were covered with debris. Then we started to crawl to the higher ground," said Dmytro Syrotenko, 26, who had a large gash on his face.

Syrotenko told Reuters he was taken to safety by a rescue worker who helped him, several colleagues, and shoppers.

Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, denounced the strike as "yet another example of Russian madness. There is no other way to describe it.

"When we tell world leaders that Ukraine needs sufficient air defences, when we say we need real decisive measures to enable us to protect our people, so that Russian terrorists cannot even approach our border, we are talking about not allowing strikes like this to happen," he said.

Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians, but thousands have been killed and injured during its 27-month full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Just more Russia taking care of Russian speakers.

Russian aggressors again doing what they're best at:

terrorizing Ukrainian civilians!

Killing / murdering innocent people!

Finally close the sky over Ukraine!

Finally provide Ukraine with weapon systems to hit enemy positions in Russia!

Ukraine prevails (more than 820 days already!)

Yikes, Russia. Was this intentional?

Have I missed quelque chose in this article? Belgorod was shelled from Kharkov again today. People were killed again. 4 dead civilians of the Belgorod region. Injured children. Again no one word about them. But the shopping center that was blown up in Kharkov was famous for the fact that, in addition to building materials, it stored a large supply of ammunition. Military personnel worked in it under the guise of sellers. Moreover, gatherings of Budanov's people were constantly held there. The residents of Kharkov knew this perfectly well!!! I repeat once again: Russians do not shoot at civilians!!! It was a military target

This is not good. All civilian casualties are very tragic and underline the need for ceasefire talks asap. Realistic talks that aim to produce results and peace for Ukraine, not pipe dreams.

Was this intentional? One would hope not. Were there military assets hidden inside or next to those buidings as in previous cases? One would also hope not.

Btw, as usual Reuters / JT choose to present only selective one sided headlines. Today's same headlines from a bit more unbiased Al Jazeera..... " Attacks kill four in Ukraine’s Kharkiv, three in Russia’s Belgorod...."

Just after the explosion in the shopping center, a fresh French journalist appeared, who recorded a reportage about this explosion. Where did he come from so quickly? Many people have left the city a long time ago, including journalists, especially foreign ones.

Now look at the situation with a cool head. There is active fighting in the area, and people go to the centre on their day off to buy construction materials. Who is building during explosions and air alarms? Either no one is shooting at Kharkov, or your sources of information are lying about civilians. Another "Butcha"

Terrorist cities can be safe overnight by Russia agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire.

Yesterday some guy claimed 'group sever' was "stopped" and insinuated all positions were under control. This was not true.

This DIY hardware store was a bit more than that but they come up with interesting descriptions.

What an evil country Russia is!

What right do they have to attack, invade and murder their peaceful neighbors in Ukraine?

A few months back the Planeta shopping center in the Shevchenkovsky district of north Kharkiv was in the blast radius of an Iskander missile strike. All on camera, the pinpoint target was a pair of MLRS systems and their supporting vehicles. Only the 'shopping center' made the article here then.

This time round it's the Epicenter shopping center in the Osnovianskyi district of south Kharkiv. That telltale plume of smoke, secondary explosions and raging fire with ongoing detonations indicate something definitely stored there.

Unfolding situation with air raids going off over Ukraine right now. Reported earlier strategic aviation Bears were aloft from the north and another pack over the Caspian with Backfires.

Initial photos of strike show a huge plume of white smoke, betraying the obvious that stored missiles went up in smoke.

The spin - it was full of shoppers buying "upgrades for their summer cottages".

The truth - was being used as a staging post by GUR for Vampire and Hurricane systems.
