Roskomnadzor, blocked Facebook, citing its alleged “discrimination” of the Russian media and state information resources. The agency said in a statement that the restrictions introduced by Facebook owner Meta on the Russian news channel RT and other state-controlled media violate the Russian law.

and

The Russian media blocks also affected five foreign media organizations based abroad which publish news in Russian. They included the BBC, the U.S. government-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and Latvia-based website Meduza. Together, they are among the most influential and often critical foreign media publishing in Russian.

Who decides what is "misinformation" and "fake news"

Donald Trump?

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Dictators gotta dictate.

For international readers, you should know that some parts of the world don't allow suppression of news. This might come as a shock to people in China, NK, and now Russia.

There are some places in the world, with democratic representation, that also suppress news. It is pretty shocking to learn that Turkey and India do this. So does Thailand.

Those are places where I've personally seen content suppression.

Govts that don't allow truth to be stated are extremely weak and fearful of being overthrown, internally. So very sad.

Those who talk the most about "fake news" are usually the ones pushing it the most.

Typical authoritarian move. Just jail anyone who says anything negative against Russia and the war. In other words, praise Putin and say the war is good or else!

6 ( +10 / -4 )

The bill criminalizing the intentional spreading of what Russia deems to be “fake” reports about the war was quickly rubber-stamped by both houses of the Kremlin-controlled parliament earlier in the day.

If you know who Putin confidant returns to power in 2024 guess what is going to be high on the legislative agenda?

Can they still get the the Joe Rogan Show? He had a bit of fake news saying Seagal was fighting on the front lines with Russian troops. Wonder who started that little nugget of misinformation?

Seagal

The guy is just a total idiot. No wonder he left the US.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Putin, the god of war and the minister of propaganda. He’s really flipped out.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Dark times ahead for the media there.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

praise Putin and say the war is good or else!

No, no, no! That will get you jailed.

praise Putin and say the special military operation in eastern Ukraine is good or else!

There, fixed it for you. Now you’re safe.

The citizens of Russia know that their glorious leader is attacking only ‘military targets’. Like Kharkiv Zoo, full of captive animals that obviously pose an existential threat to the security of the Russian Empire.

Vlad has totally lost the plot.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Since the Russian government war reports themselves are mostly fake (e.g. "a special operation only in the eastern breakaway region"), then they too must be punishable under the new law.

Best to keep your mouth shut tight, I guess. Rather grim. I feel desperately sorry for the raw recruits facing death there for no obvious reason, and unable to appeal.

Putin may try to bomb Ukraine back to the stone age, but the west has the ability to starve russia back there as well. Problem is that a cornered rat can do unpredictable things.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

What a disgrace Russia's brutal invasion of the poor Ukrainians is. And as far as free speech goes, Russia, Twitter, Facebook, etc. have much in common.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Vlad has totally lost the plot.

And seems to be winning this war.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

And seems to be winning this war.

I don’t know about the definition of winning. He could succeed in incading Ukraine but how is he going to hold it when his country has no money?

He already lost. There’s no winner in this war.

And on the same day as the “fake news” law? CNN stops broadcasting in Russia.

just a coincidence, certainly,

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Everything Vlad says is a lie. Not fake new, a big lie. Anything that comes out of Vlad is the opposite of reality. When do you know when Vlad is telling a lie? When Vlad opens his mouth.

Russia to punish 'fake' war reports with 15 years in prison:

Nowadays, fake reports are abundant, especially war reports that have often been not verified or authenticated.

Could Russia put all the frauds in prison for 15 years..?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Surprised? Russia hands out prison sentences like candy.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

From the worlds premier provider of misinformation over the last 15 years.

At least it's gone quieter on the anti-tax and culture wars diarrhoea recently.

anti-vax.

tho it could easily be tax also.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

And this doesn’t mean I support Russia or Putin, I do NOT

Sure.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Don't take Putins Coca-Cola away then he's really upset.

As you can see Putin just loves USA culture and the sanctions a comedy show for children.

He probably sees NATO and the west games as a blessing in disguise.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The first casualty when war comes is "truth".

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Russia has re-entered the Soviet era, back to where it was 70 years ago!!! And this time it is going to be mush harder to recover

2 ( +2 / -0 )

And on the same day as the “fake news” law? CNN stops broadcasting in Russia.

just a coincidence, certainly

Not a coincidence at all. If they continue to inform the Russian public of things Mad Vlad doesn’t want them to hear, they risk having their employees thrown in a Russian jail for merely doing their jobs. The BBC and Canadian Broadcasting Corp have also stopped reporting since Vlad signed the law. Would you prefer to see conscientious reporters thrown in jail on trumped up charges?

What’s your point?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

And on the same day as the “fake news” law? CNN stops broadcasting in Russia.

just a coincidence, certainly

I dunno.

On the subject of questionable news sources, I still reckon our resident alternative media types who told us a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine was a load of nonsense cooked up by the ‘MSM’ have been reading or watching the worst garbage.

I asked them a few times for links to sources which led them to believe this but got no answer.

I found that very impolite.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

What’s your point?

On the exact day that pushing fake news now has real consequences, fake news leaves.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The most important right of a people to defend its democracy is to remove by any means necessary ANY government that denies freedom of speech to citizens. Putin has now crossed that line so somebody TAKE HIM OUT! And meanwhile NATO should stop pussyfooting around with Putin, call his bluff (there can NEVER be a nuclear war, and even Putin understands why) and make it clear to the Russians that Putin's attack on the sovereign country of Ukraine threatens the stability of Europe making a military intervention with NATO air power unavoidable. Then watch Putin panic! Game over!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

On the exact day that pushing fake news now has real consequences, fake news leaves.

If only you’d noticed the consequences of fake news earlier. Still, better late than never I suppose.
