and ruled out a torpedo attack from North Korea, which would have been spotted by radar.

-Obviously radar cannot spot mines it seems.

Probably was a moored mine that broke loose and flowed into the shipping lanes. It could have been either the North's or the South's mine that got away. Though I just based on initial info, I doubt if it was one of the south's. I base that on assuming that the currents would bring an unmoored mine down towards the South and not go back to the north, and that the ROKN ship was on their side of the sea DMZ.

Just my guess.

They were probably all too busy talking about how bad North Korea is and how North Korea is the cause of all problems etc, etc.

It'll be a year before they give a reason for the sinking. Raising the ship and all. Sit back and wait. < :-)

Badsey, of course you are right. I would think that they might have meant sonar. If they were actually listening, they probably would have heard a NKorean torpedo coming. On the other hand, that area is apparently so rocky that a submarine would not want to negotiate that area. It would also not be able to get away if caught.

"“The navy is rotten to the core!” a man yelled,""

Wow. What motivates people to say things like this? Even if his relative died, it makes no sense.

Blaming all this on the NKoreans is certainly the easiest way off the hook, but there is that nagging casus belli problem. If it were the US Navy, we would all be moving down that path already.

Headlines like that ought to be illegal. A lot of things remain in the "may have" category, so the press should be barred from leading us on matters that could lead to WAR.

The Defense Minister says 'may have' so I guess this is the result of various scenarios having been run, and the most likely answer is...

It does seem likely to me too.

Mass hysteria has pushed these poor divers to their limits and beyond. One died today and another is injured, the press is reporting.

Take it carefully in those cold treacherous waters. Safety first please.

The Navy's chief of staff, Kim Sung-Chan, has said the ship's ammunition storage room did not appear to have exploded and "the ship was broken in two because of powerful outside pressure or an (exterior) explosion", AFP news agency reported.

The evening news here in Japan (Sat 3rd April) is reporting that the SK Ministry of Defense/Defence is now looking more seriously at the possibility of a torpedo.
