Closer to 92%..and thats from the The Lancet. Hardly a pro-Russian publication. Where do you obtain your info @Michael Machida?

@Michael Machida

I think you are confusing this with the Chinese vaccine. Russian vaccine has been shown highly effective in a peer reviewed independent study.

Personally, I'd take any vaccine whose safety and efficacy has been independently verified. No need to get nationalistic about it.

Gordon Bennett, it's probably going to be faster to fly over to Seoul and get a Russian vaccination than to get an American one in Tokyo.

Seriously, WTF is the Japanese government playing at?

The Sputnik V doses manufactured in South Korea are not for domestic use. The vaccine is to be exported back to Russia. The doses also will be exported to Iran, Argentina, Algeria, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates, according to EDaily.

Not sure why this part was left out.

Michael Machida: almost 92.00% effective.

Very good vaccine.

India's ambassador to Moscow on Friday said deliveries of Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine to India were expected to begin before the end of April, after Indian regulators approved the shot for use on Monday.

That's a incomplete statement, fails to mention that Sputnik V will also be produced locally within 3-4 months.

Smart !

Russia should concentrate first on getting their own citizens vaccinated - they're lagging way behind

But after many millions of shots administered of the Chinese vaccines, all over the world, no reports of significant side effects.

Unfortunately, the countries they're administered are developing or underdeveloped countries - where health agencies aren't as organized, so who knows how well they're being tracked

Well this is a basic licensing agreement between the Ministry of Finance (MinFin) and four SK companies to manufacturer 100M of the Sput V. Check. What would be most interesting is if the authors could reply and tell us a few more details; such as who gets to have the distribution responsibilities / profits, and how much was the agreement worth for MinFin in the first place, and in which currency? (Vaccine sales may be the newest and largest foreign currency cash cows, second only to oil). Also, any technology-sharing components to the agreement? Swapping of biotech experts? SK contracts are almost ALWAYS very very complete and thorough. Also, is there anyway to know how much India received in "foreign aid" - or any money from any source, such as a shell company for that matter - for / just prior to their approval of SputV? Thank you for the followup.

Sputnik has been peer-reviewed as effective by 'The Lancet'.

At the moment vaccine supplies are bottlenecked, so the more labs producing the stuff, the better, globally. We are not protected until we are all protected. And regardless of sanctions, that will include North Korea.

Whether it is China, Russia or the WHO, North Korea cannot be left as an incubation centre for new variants.

At the start of the pandemic, masks were rationed, in short supply and the price shot up. Now they are more widely available and cheaper. So much so that in the UK you cannot walk down the street without seeing masks on the floor - part of the general litterscape.

At the moment, vaccine is in short supply, rationed and folk are playing politics with it. Hopefully supplies will ramp up. The demand is there, so getting the right to produce an effective vaccine is a licence to print money. If that helps speed the production of the stuff, that's fine. AZ has an open licence and remains a solid vaccine, even if some countries are getting sniffy about a tiny number of side effects. There may be some side effects with all the vaccines, but the alternative to not taking them is much worse.

More reliable vaccine options, more vaccine production and more vaccinated people is good. Get on with it.

The Russian vaccine is a no-brainer. I really hope the Japanese government comes to its collective senses and buys it ASAP. But I'd also take the Chinese vaccines. They are not very effective but seem to be safe. If it's only 50% effective and perfectly safe, why not take it? Wouldn't take any of the Western vaccines.

JnJ CEO says we will need a third shot and yearly boosters like the ever changing Flu vaccine.

Can you mix and match vaccines after the first set of two or one?

@Paul

Why bother if it’s only 50% effective then? Might as well take a placebo

Plus the director of China’s health agency recently announced their vaccine wasn’t as good as first thought.

"That's pure hatred, wonder what's the source.. keep on hating the 99% recovery rate.."

Your great PM Modi's home state is fudging the death toll.

India has a double mutant variant which will make existing vaccines less effective

The sources are all there but for dumb-bhakts everything is fine since they will only believe that taking a dip in filthy river will make them immune to the virus.

Japan must link up with this S Korean company to secure these vaccines for its people.

Guaranteed it will never happen. If it does happen, you and I won't know about it because the j-gov will definitely put a ridiculous spin onto it to hide j-gov's utter incompetence.

After the pandemic the world will be full of zombies controlled by Putin and Xi, thankfully, not in Japan

In Japan everyone will be dead after having been given the Pfizer vaccine, for the 6th booster inside a year.

I understand that. My absolute priority would be Sputnik V. But after many millions of shots administered of the Chinese vaccines, all over the world, no reports of significant side effects. It's not as effective as they had hoped. But 50% effective while no more trouble than getting a saline solution shot sounds like a good deal to me. A placebo is of completely ineffective so it's far from the same thing.

Well, we have a licensing agreement the Ministry of Finance and four South Korean companies. Check. What would be great is if the authors could please respond with some more details of the agreements. For instance, how much money is involved and in what currency. Vaccine licensing can be a great source of foreign cash, being perhaps next to oil. Do the four Korean companies already have existing sharing agreements with other international pharmaceutical? Does this agreement provide for the exchange of biological technology or of experts back to the Ministry? Good article. Keep up the good work.

"That's a incomplete statement, fails to mention that Sputnik V will also be produced locally within 3-4 months."

Yes 3-4 months so that means the bodies will pile up till then. Also no one is sure that Sputnik V will be as effective against the double mutant variant that is causing the spike in Indian cases.

This is great news for that part of the world. Japan must link up with this S Korean company to secure these vaccines for its people. It would go a long way at beating this deadly virus because everyone in Japan could get the jabs when it's their turn much, much faster.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

But, .... it's only 50.7% effective. So, why?

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

Practically, it is more between both values, about 70-85% or so. Those good sounding values over 90% are all maximum possible values under extreme clean and professional laboratory conditions, meant to promote the product, but of course so never to be reached in your local hospital, vaccination center or whatever parking lot you receive your vaccine, sometimes not even set by schooled medical personnel.
