The image that marks the utter defeat of fascists.

Nice story- and beautiful, joyful photo. Salt of the earth. Thanks for this article.

Mendonsa planted a kiss on Friedman, whom he had never met.

Ah the good ole days, when spontaneous romance and affection by men onto women was considered normal.

These days that same kiss would probably get you in jail.

Context is everything, which you clearly fail to understand.

In which context (these days) can a man grab a random woman forcefully and plant a deep kiss without her consent.

Beautiful story, both lived long lives and been through the worst and the best of times. RIP and a salute to both of these amazing patriots.

Sad that all I can think of now due to liberal nonsense is that he would be arrested today and his life ruined by social media.

I am glad that this man was able to live a long and glorious life free from “modern day” standards.

Given we haven't been at war on the scale we were just before the photo was taken, none.

The war was tough. Women’s rights were also tough.

Me too

Quote: She added, "It was just somebody really celebrating. But it wasn't a romantic event."

The guy was probably drunk and smelling of tobacco. You can tell it wasn't romantic by her clenched left hand.

By the same token, she never said "#me too", years later.

Despite their passing, George and Greta are immortal. Blessings.

The power of the camera.

A drunken sailor who took advantage of the situation and kissing an unsuspecting woman..

T'was a day of deep, overwhelming emotions released by the end of hostilities, and so all it took was a little alcohol and some dutch courage for a man to kiss a woman on the street and a gifted photographer waiting for his chance to create an iconic image that would give the momentary couple everlasting fame. As a symbol of joy celebrating peace in the aftermath of years of senseless carnage the stolen kiss was a harmless gesture and a powerful rebuke to the horror of war. Me,too? Schme, too!

Like respecting women and not assaulting them?

I imagine there's those that miss pre-suffrage and peonage, too.

Still, whatever the circumstances, a striking photo.

Decades later, Mendonsa and Friedman reunited a few years ago in Times Square and reenacted the famous kiss:

Glad they were able to do it before they passed away

Fun fact: Mendonsa only saw the photo for the first time in 1980 - 35 years after it happened

Furthermore, Mendonsa's future wife is in one of the photo frames, in the background smiling ear-to-ear

They were on a date while Mendonsa was on-leave, but scheduled for redeployment

That's why he was so happy that he didn't have to go back to war

And obviously his date didn't mind the kiss (she stayed married to Mendonsa ever since), lol

Somebody spray painted #me too on statue of that famous kiss. Ohwell...... haters gonna hate.

Why are people so judgmental? If truth be told, even a stolen kiss is hardly a sin compared to all the other disgusting acts that shame our species.
