Dave L. is laughing all the way to the bank while the ratings sore.

As for S. Palin, I have zero interest in her but I will say, I love the way she wears her hair. I wish more women wore their hair up like that. She's quite attractive, despite everything else.

Sailwind,

Thank you for your kind words. I'd be lying if I said the admiration wasn't mutual. Which is why I have a hard time understanding why you in particular are getting so worked up over something I truly see as an artificially tweaked manipulation and distraction. It seems just too obvious to me that the anger is more because it was Palin's daughter than if it had been anyone else.

Across the board there are instances where no one said a peep when young women (they're all someone's daughter, after all) were raked over the coals for whatever reason due to their political visibility. Meghan McCain is just one recent example. Nancy Pelosi is another. Monica Lewinsky is yet another. And with that last example, I can virtually guarantee you that there are posters here thinking, "Ah, well, Monica. Now calling HER a slut . . . Yeah, that's understandable." And I want to ask why.

No one seems willing or able to explain the different standards of measure, but it seems the single overriding factor in determining how angry everyone is or should be here (as I'm constantly being reminded) is that Bristol is Sarah's daughter. And I'm thinking, "So what? What makes her so damned special that her bad behavior can't be satirized and exploited, while others can be --- with relish?"

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this. I agree Letterman should have apologized. He went too far with the joke and admitting it was the right thing to do. And as far as I've seen, Palin is letting it end at that. But there're people out there who still want Letterman's head for this. And a large number of them are major Limbaugh fans. That being the case, I'm not going to budge on this until the Right does a little house cleaning of their own and applies equally their standards of so-called “decency.”

I stand by my position that being a public figure puts you and your loved ones in harms way for jokes.

ok you've restated your feeling. but you claim it happens everyday. coming up with one example shouldn't be too difficult.

by the way olive garden just pulled their ads for the year. they are allowed to do that, right?

LRA,

I respect every post on this thread. You are a person who I have come to admire the past four years on J.T.

We have tangled on many topics, we also have agreed on many topics. When the discussion is about history, man I bow my head to you.

But on this one...... I can't fathom how going after a persons daughter is cool. I draw the line at that. That is who sailwind is....I hope that resonates with you, if not maybe Liberals and Conservatives really never will get along.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think Palin ought to apologize to Dave for slandering him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BTW, where exactly have I "slammed" you? I disagree with you. I think you're working very hard to justify this in your mind as something more than it is. And I think you're being more than a little self-righteous. Sure, we all have at one poitn or another. But my calling you on it isn't "slamming" you by any stretch.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind,

I haven't said otherwise. It was a bad joke. It was tasteless. It was tacky. It was insulting. And it's no different than the kind of garbage that's slung on a daily basis by political pundits on both sides, hence my refusal to grab a torch and pitchfork and hop on the bandwagon with you.

You got suckered, Sailwind, purely and simply. This was a non-story relative to the bile we see everyday in the media, until Palin supporters in the blogosphere grabbed a hold of it, dressed it up a lot as something it wasn't (e.g., "David Letterman thinks the statutory rape of a 14-year old is funny"), and ran with it. It morphed as it went, going from, "Oh, David doesn't think raping a 14-year-old is funny, but raping and 18-year-old is," to "David's a pedophile. He should be kept away form his own son." It was ridiculous, it was sad, and it was entirely predictable, the downward spiral. And you gleefully went along for the ride. Honestly, I expected better from you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I stand by my position that being a public figure puts you and your loved ones in harms way for jokes. Period. Don't like it, don't be a public figure. Period.

Free speech is free speech, even if we don't like the content.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I also think he was quite sincere in that statement and apology and wouldn't really want to see good liberal folks like you continue to do so I might add.

But do carry on in getting your slams in on me for agreeing with Letterman that this can't be defended.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LFR

You should have passed your "defense" of this to Letterman.

He already came to the right conclusion about it two days ago. You missed that bus I take it?

It was “a coarse joke,” “a bad joke,” Letterman told viewers. “But I never thought it was (about) anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure, in fact, that she is of legal age, 18.”

The joke, really, in and of itself, can’t be defended,” he declared.

Might read that last sentence a couple of more times before you opine again on this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind,

"Sounds like a rape suspects defense.....Well Bristol asked for it by her questionable behavior."

I'm heartened here. You've finally let go of the insistence that Letterman was talking about Willow, and finally accepted that, as he maintained all along, it was a comment about Bristol.

Now if you'll take that extra step towards realizing that public figures like Bristol are always going to be targets of comedians, pundits, and critics, then maybe we’ll get somewhere. Bristol doesn’t get a free pass just because she’s the daughter of Saint Palin, any more than Meghan McCain is somehow magically protected from being called a “fat pig,” “Cellulite,” or a “slut” by some of the finer voices in the Republican blogosphere, like Dan Riehl, just by being John McCain’s little girl.

Where was the “good, decent American” outrage when Meghan, having the audacity to criticize members of her own party, was being raked over the coals for things so sexist and irrelevant as her dress size and her sexual proclivities? The protests were nowhere to be seen or heard.

Now let’s check the scorecard:

Bristol Palin got knocked up (yes, that’s what we call it in colloquial terms, for better or worse, when a woman gets pregnant out of wedlock - personally, I hate the term), the entire nation became aware of it as Palin’s candidacy as VP became public knowledge, and she was later skewered in a tasteless but no less relevant joke on national television about the possibility that she might very well exercise the same lack of good judgment by having a tryst with Yankess badboy Alex Rodriguez. No matter how much you try to twist Letterman's words, it wasn’t a suggestion that 33-year old men should make light of having sex with women 15 years their younger. it was a dig on Bristol's demonstrated poor judgement. Was it nice? Not even a little. Was it so outrageous as to spark this feeding frenzy on the Right? Hardly.

McCain, on the other hand did what, exactly? Oh, yeah. She spoke her mind. She criticized the Republican Party for essentially guaranteeing the 2008 election defeat by systematically ostracizing anyone and everyone who didn’t subscribe to their conservative, “I’m a white, wealthy, Christian a-hole and proud of it” platform. And she was skewered for it – by members of her own party, no less.

But no, no. We can’t address that. No, according to you, this is a mean-spirited attack on the daughter of Saint Palin based solely on politics, and Republicans would never say such things about their adversaries (psst! To keep your argument intact, we’ll just not mention how the “respectful” Republican Party talks about Nancy Pelosi. No need to thank me, pal. Gratis.).

Wait a sec. Wasn’t it you who was admonishing me earlier for making this political?

Yeah, Sailwind. Keep telling yourself whatever lets you sleep at night.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"really? can we have an example?"

Bill Clinton, Paris Hilton, former Senator Larry Craig, Britney Spears.

That's just the 10-second list.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As long as you know the truth then grow a strong skin and carry on.

They seem to grown a pretty strong skin in putting Letterman's put his money where his mouth is. He groveled pretty good to them in his apology the other night. They also have something you seem to be missing in getting your digs in on them. They were gracious enough to accept his apology and that shows not a strong skin but also real character and class from that "Hick Clan" in Alaska.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

But being a public figure puts you and your loved ones out there. We see this every day with celebrities.

really? can we have an example?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Palin's daugher was just a means of going after Palin. That is pretty clear.

no one deserves to be a target of humor. But being a public figure puts you and your loved ones out there. We see this every day with celebrities. It is a reality public figures have to accept or give up being a public figure.

As long as you know the truth then grow a strong skin and carry on.

you called me mate so i assume you're not american. i am. i lived in new york city for many years, the belly of the beast. in one of the most liberal neighborhoods. most of my closest friends are extremely liberal.

the onslaught against conservatives i witnessed was staggering. they threw everything including the kitchen sink at bush. the attacks were relentless. the attacks were vicious. the attacks were ugly. but bush never complained. obama is already complaining about rush and fox. he has 90% of the media in his pocket yet he still complains.

i know how the left is operating. i listen, i see. i'm not making anything up. they are so self righteous they don't see how hate filled and ugly they've become. sure there is some of that on the right as well. but i see more of it on the left, ironically. just look at the posts you see on boards like this. usually it's the guys on the left who get all rude and in your face.

the left is riding a wave. they are the dominate ones now. and they are choosing (not obama but the base) to be ugly. just watch as they try to destroy rush. they paint him out to be some hate monger. people hate him who have no idea what he actually says or does. i recently saw a group of talking heads bashing rush on the bbc. after some time they admitted they had never actually heard his program. there are plenty of similar (if less successful) voices on the left. but rush is a target. he's a threat.

now that the election is over can we just get a little civility? just a little.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind, Palin was the target because the point was to attack her via her daughter. No Palin, no reason to comment on her daughter.

And it isn't about deserving. No one deserves to be the target of humor. But it is a reality of being a public figure. And we see it every single day on TV.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The reason Palin is a target for this kind of joke

Palin wasn't the target of this kind of joke. Her daughter was. Now did her daughter DESERVE this kind of "humor" or how low will you go to get your slam in on Palin.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Palin/Letterman story is all a distraction. And it seems it is working just fine.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"then explain beer man why are these protesters fascists?"

The mod on this site is prohibiting me from doing so. But I did have a good explanation.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Inkjet. Come on. Put the card carrying liberal scare away for a moment.

I would equally defend Palin's right to complain. Or the right of others to voice their opinion about Letterman's joke.

Where it becomes fascist is when exercising their right to an opinion turns into their expectation of a right of reprisal. They don't have that right and should not be granted it. To opinion for strong sanctions and penalties are their perogative. But to go after someone for speech and demand they lose their jobs or be ostricized is fascism.

In any case I am tired of the conservative's trying to pain every idea they hate as some red scare liberal threat. Give it a rest mate no one has bought into that since the Dukakus run for office. The cold war is over and people are a lot more informed about left and right political ideas in the US now. It is actually ok to be liberal now. Please join us in 2009 and put the 80's behind you.

Altria at 01:23 PM JST - 18th June I didn't like his joke, but I defend his freedom to tell it.

Logic FAIL

you're right. he he. i must have pasted the wrong part or something. i don't remember how i go that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

then explain beer man why are these protesters fascists?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I didn't like his joke, but I defend his freedom to tell it.

another typical liberal position. you defend freedom of speech as long as you agree with it.

Logic FAIL

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"another typical liberal position. you defend freedom of speech as long as you agree with it. "

Hardly. You obviously no nothing of the liberal position.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I didn't like his joke, but I defend his freedom to tell it.

another typical liberal position. you defend freedom of speech as long as you agree with it.

how about the protester's freedom of speech? or palin's?

we can all disagree with each other as much as we like. now if you tell me you defend conservative speech as much as you do liberal speech i'll respect you. otherwise you're just whining.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind. I didn't like his joke, but I defend his freedom to tell it. Plus you color it a lot harsher than it was told. Give me a break. It was a joke. Period. In bad taste, sure. But an offence worthy of crucifiction. No way!

The reason Palin is a target for this kind of joke is the gap between her puritanical political stance and the obvious trailerpark reality of her world. I would respect her a lot more if she would just be honest with herself.

Facts are teens and young adults have sex. Abstinance is a myth propagated by people who are in denial. I grew up in Utah and conservative Mormon girls were more likely to jump your bones than the more liberal non-Mormons. Same is true in Palin's little Alaskan paradice as her kids have demonstrated.

Teem pregnancy is common. Not a good thing, but it is hypocritical to condemn it while your own family is a living example of the social issue.

Palin was clueless even about her intended role as VP had she been elected. And she remains clueless about a lot of key issues. So it isn't any wonder that people make jokes about these things. If you don't like the reality, well... change it. Or select someone with a more pure image to fit your fantacy America.

But the real US is full of people with big obvious flaws, like anywhere else in the world.

But as I have said. Please do keep Palin, she's my ace to guarantee no return of GOP power for a while. Go PALIN!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

tkoind2

I hear Sarah Palin is about to finish her first book. Then she is going to color another one.

Thats humor.

Going after her daughter claiming she had sex in front of the crowd at Yankee stadium isn't humor, it was petty and vindictive on so many levels.

Got the difference now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Fascist fits anyone who would crucify Letterman for a bad joke. It is fascist behavior to want to damange someone's life for expressing an opinion or telling a joke.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The repugs are fascists.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind. My note about My Name is Earl was meant as humor. Humor is something that we sometimes practice to laugh at our own society or at our public figures. I love My Name is Earl, not because it puts down that world of people, but because it correctly reflects some of the human shortcomings of our society. That color and diversity should be something we can laugh at and be proud of at the same time.

Get a sense of humor. This applies to all your right wing friends too. Palin is the best target of comedy since George Jr. so who can blame a comedian from taking shots at her and her crew? Your pundits do the same with Clinton a decade after his little Monica incident. So give it a rest already. Laugh, breathe, laugh some more and you may find that laughing at our own nation is healthier than freaking out every time someone says something we may not like.

I have a great time laughing at Palin because she inspires humor. If you don't like that, choose someone else to represent the right. Someone dull, grey and boring. But then he/she too would have something we could laugh at too. As do we all.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"i would try to teach you to tie your shoes either"

I hope you don't teach English. ;)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Given the Palin clan's colorful rural character I am surprised there are not more joke attacks. I mean other than the characters of "My Name is Earl" the Palin clan are the best example of back water, trailer park American culture that anyone could ask for.

Boy, I sure do enjoy reading a pretentious snob chime in with the stereotypes.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Letterman made a tasteless joke about the sexual proclivities of a woman who is publicly known to have made a bad choice about casual sex resulting in an unplanned pregnancy.

The cure-all to insults is to develop thicker skin and not make yourself an easy target through questionable behavior. Bill Clinton learned that the hard way. Bristol Palin (and her mother) is learning it now.

Sounds like a rape suspects defense.....Well Bristol asked for it by her questionable behavior.

Surreal logic at work here I must say.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bristol Palin (and her mother) is learning it now.

dave apologized. i hope he's the one who learned something.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

inkjet,

Don Imus made a blatantly rascist comment. Letterman made a tasteless joke about the sexual proclivities of a woman who is publicly known to have made a bad choice about casual sex resulting in an unplanned pregnancy. There's a vast difference between the two.

i take beer for payment as a matter of f act.

That might explain your reluctance or inability to actually present a point or position clearly. While it's very convenient to simply say, "Oh, you don't know the answer? Well, I'd tell you, but I don't have time," it's also counterproductive.

Please, inkjet, share with us why you believe calling for Letterman's dismissal has absolutely nothing to do with constitutional issues.

And if you can't explain your position, then please stop insisting others are wrong sans explanation until you can. "You're wrong because I say so" isn't an explanation; It's how kindergarten children argue.

Personally, I agree. I don't think it's a constitutional issue, but by the same token, one thing we as Americans don't have is a god-given right to NOT be offended. The cure-all to insults is to develop thicker skin and not make yourself an easy target through questionable behavior. Bill Clinton learned that the hard way. Bristol Palin (and her mother) is learning it now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"a liberal talking head with a sense of decency. refreshing." Give me a break. The right have more rabid pundits than any party out there. And to listen to them you would think all liberals had cloved hooves and horns. Palin included.

Dave's joke was maybe a bad idea. But let's face reality if you are public figure, you and your clan are a target for comedy. If you don't like this kind of exposure, don't become a public figure.

Given the Palin clan's colorful rural character I am surprised there are not more joke attacks. I mean other than the characters of "My Name is Earl" the Palin clan are the best example of back water, trailer park American culture that anyone could ask for.

If Palin persists in her political career, she had better harden up the trailer park crew and get them ready for a lot more attacks. Most of them self inflicted by her coloquial and out of touch view of the world. The rest for her obvious incapacity to live up to the expectations that most of us have of our national leaders.

Again Sarah, please do run for office. It will be a guaranteed win for the left. I'll even help pay for your campaign. Go get 'em Joy, I mean Sarah.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

i personally don't think letterman should be fired. i didn't think imus should have been fired either. palin backed off as soon as he apologized. which is more than i can say for the likes of sharpton (and most on the left). they didn't back down after imus apologized.

i have no opinion about palin as a politician. i'm enjoying japan, that's enough for me right now. but she was dead right to defend her kids. if i was todd i would have slapped his smug face. dave was wrong. things have gotten out of control. his first apology was bogus, it only made it worse. now that he has properly apologized it's settled (for me).

if some want his head that's their right. they are no more fascist than those who went after imus.

isn't it interesting that dave mentioned it was mark shields who changed his mind. a liberal talking head with a sense of decency. refreshing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Letterman makes lowbrow jokes now and then, so what?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Inkjet. I have to agree that the right calling for Letterman's head was a bit extreme. Especially coming from Palin who was not exactly a charming character during the election.

Bottom line for me. Palin is a joke. A bad one that did the right side of the fence a lot more damage than good. She was the embodyment of all that was wrong with the Bush Jr. era.

The joke was off color. But then that is not so uncommon either. The right took it to heart because they have a lot of hope that Palin is a key player in the future of the GOP. As a devoted person of left wing persuasion, I sincerely hope she is a key player for the GOP. I can think of nothing better for my cause than Sarah Palin set loose to talk to the public. Go Sarah!!!

Free speech and fascists trying to shut it down? What Constitution are you looking at?

are you old enough to drink beer? did you go to high school in america? did you graduate?

i'm not going to educate you here. unless of course you want to pay me. i take beer for payment as a matter of f act.

i suggest you do a little research before you start calling people fascists. you really look like a fool.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Free speech and fascists trying to shut it down? What Constitution are you looking at?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

first of all this has nothing to do with the first amendment. you just demonstrate your ignorance by bringing up. try to keep your head it helps. cool your jets.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh, I see the double standard. The right spews its vile hate speech and two people are murdered--has O'Silly or Rash been fired? But Letterman cracks an off-color joke that is "misunderstood" and the right calls for his head. One of the differences here is that we in the reality-based community cherish the 1st amendment to the Constitution, while those on the knuckle-dragging fascist side believe only in the 2nd.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That's for your input, inkjet. Very illuminating.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Beerplease, Rush Limbaugh has gotten away with spewing hate, racism, sexism, slander, and general obnoxiousness for years

hey LFRAgain i think he was sarcastic.

are you suggesting the left don't give rush a hard time?

they can dish it out but boy oh boy they can't take it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Comrade, Shhh! Please to not use big three ruble words like "obnoxiousness." Intelligencia class don't do so good in Peoples Glorious Reeducation Camp and Spa. (Is glancing nervously over shoulder)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Beerplease,

Rush Limbaugh has gotten away with spewing hate, racism, sexism, slander, and general obnoxiousness for years. His punishment for those transgressions? He's now the de facto spokesperson for the Republican Party. Gotta' love it.

This fabricated (coff! coff!) "outrage" with Letterman has been duly noted. Palin supporters have squeezed about as much mileage out of this as they can. Can't wait to see what's next. Meanwhile, the Republican Party is still in shambles, the economy is still a mess, and US soldiers are still dying needlessly on the other side of the planet for another fabrication. Interesting to see where everyone's priorities are.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

of course they do. and they are vilified for it.

imus...fired. oh yeah, no context. puuhleeese.

didn't they have to apalogize for a political cartoon recently because the left found it racist? and that was a cartoon about obama, the president, not obama the daughter.

can you imagine if bush complained about the vile images they used of him?

if you don't see a double standard you are not looking.

the left love to complain about others. they can dish it but they can't take it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"The left's been getting away with this stuff for years."

Yeah, no one on the right ever says anything outrageous. Try joining the reality-based community.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

MrBum at 05:35 PM JST - 17th June Actually, if Obama ran his campaign on family values and his daughter was knocked up in high school, had a baby out of wedlock AND was no longer a minor, I'm pretty sure Letterman would have made the same joke about them. It's all about context.

yeah right. that's a good one. ha ha.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As I was saying before I was so RUDELY interrupted, this is all about politics and has nothing to do with comedy. The left's been getting away with this stuff for years. This time, however, one old commie got the ridicule dumped back on him. Way to go, SARAH!

Besides, is all in goood fun. Da comrade?

"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage."

Actually, if Obama ran his campaign on family values and his daughter was knocked up in high school, had a baby out of wedlock AND was no longer a minor, I'm pretty sure Letterman would have made the same joke about them. It's all about context.

The Don Imus thing had no context, and was just plain racist.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Palin is considered a potential future candidate for national office"

REALLY...!! I suppose after Bush anything is possible.

USA = laughing stock of the world!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If she becomes president then we will have truly seen the Raise of the Idoits out to it's conclusion..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I support Palin on this ONLY because if it was a "comedian" that said it about obama's daughters, there would be riots in the streets and the person would be fired. The same thing happened when Don Imus - a man hired to be shocking and controversial - said the US Womens Basketball team was a bunch of "nappy-headed (bad word for easy women)" and was fired, and activists demanded he be fired. Letterman used to be the favorite of college-type humor in the 1990s, but now isnt funny any more. He didnt have a TV show during the "writers strike", so it is obvious he doesnt even write his own jokes.

Letterman is also FAR FAR to the left politically, and Palin is slightly to the right

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I bet Letterman intended to joke about Sarah Palin, but he referred to the wrong agent-- her daughter NOT Palin herself.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another phony issue in a string of phony issues that the right wing echo bunnies create because they cant face the truth.

Everyone remember the attack on Christmas?? That was a good one.

Anyway, Palin will disappear into the dustbin of republican losers soon. Letterman is doing her a favor by keeping her in the news. She cant do it on her own cause nothing she says makes sense.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ratings are up, that explains it all.

It explains all for those who are blind to the relativity of Letterman's "success" here - he has been losing viewers for years. That a 62 y.o. man had to resort to rape 'jokes' about a 14 y.o girl shows you where the Left is.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ratings are up, that explains it all.

If you want to score points with the American public, make fun of Sarah Palin. Its that easy. She is the Dan Quayle of the 00s, except not as smart.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Anyone with the mindset to joke about the statutory rape of a 14 year old girl is a sick man. Regina should not leave Letterman and their son Harry alone together in the same room.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

republicans still pinning there hopes on her? enjoy the wilderness

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Letterman is usually entertaining, but he has debased himself with this remark. I back Sarah Palin 100% in this. I hope she is the next President.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't fool yourself, there was no pressure from advertisers. Palin ain't that important.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow! The pressure from the sponsors must have been intense for it to force a sincere-sounding apology out of an arrogant libertard like Letterman!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Okay, you're all wrong. Letterman's ratings were up last week. Now tonight in America, Letterman did a second apology, he took the high road. And it was issued such that the next time sarah and todd whine about "those people" in New York and Hollywood, she will come off as petty and vindictive.

What we're left with is: The joke is over, and sarah palin has STILL never issued a policy statement nor position on anything except a couple of the red meat issues for conservatives. After almost a year in the national spotlight. Heck, she never even got back to katie couric about which papers she reads.

The Ten Top Reasons Dave Letterman Shouldn't Visit Alaska

Grizzlies can smell ‘dead meat' from miles away.

It's really difficult to walk back to shore from the deck of a fishing trawler 200 miles off the coast of Unalakleet.

Dave would be the only guy stupid enough to lick the flagpole in front of the Barrow post office in February.

10,000,000 mosquitos would just love to perform fellatio on Dave, strapped naked to the float of a bush plane.

A man Dave's age would have a difficult time out-running a bullet from Sarah Palin's favorite moose rifle.

From the center of the Harding Ice Field no one can hear you scream.

Strands of silver hair sticking out of sled-dog poop make lousy Iditarod trail markers.

That pin-striped suit inside a crab pot at the bottom of Resurrection Bay, probably wouldn't keep the Dungeness away from Dave's genitals.

Fourteen year old polar bears have no sense of humor when it comes to performing kinky sex acts with some old bug-eyed dude from New York City.

Dave would have trouble getting a laugh when telling a Sarah Palin joke from the bottom of a crevasse on Mount Denali.

This from an old retired white operative in the Republican party in the state. Unbelievable. And this guy is not a comedian like Letterman. Typical racist mindset from the over-the-hill gang.

Palins children practice sex from early age which tons of proofs scattered all over media. It is a shame that she is fighting with Letterman instead of teaching her children how not get pregnant before college years. And that kind of woman/politician running for big political events is totally reflecting how brain dead acting the supporting political institution behind her.

And so is her Daughters.....Them Palin's breed like rabbits after all.

A-rod is a 14 years old girl?

Tele, why the surprise? They only want tolerance and non-judgemental behavior towards THEM. You certainly can't expect them to live by the code they demand of others, do you? That would be nonsense.

Palin is joke, always was, always will be. Trailer trash somehow made into a national figure.

Perfect example of the sort of liberal "tolerance" and "non-judgemental" commentary discussed in the short video below (url which JT's html or Firefox won't correctly display, so you'll have to search).

Palin is joke, always was, always will be. Trailer trash somehow made into a national figure. She says we should not consider her a front runner. I say Letterman has a better chance of winning the GOP nomination than Palin. She was a painful last ditch effort to bail out McCain's floundering campaign and she's a memory they most likely wish they could have everyone forget.

As for the joke. Who cares. Letterman attacks everyone with his jokes. Bad taste or not it goes with the territory of being a public family.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

teleprompter is full of it as usual.

He said:

Read the original "joke." It's about Yankee shortstop A-Rod and Willow Palin. It's clear we have in Letterman a "liberal" - progressive man, 62 years old, wishing rape upon a 14 year-old girl.

Read it, Read it, like I said earlier I watched the clip after hearing your accusations.

You are just sick for dwelling on such a sick thing.

It was clear ... you say "It was clear" then you are sick. That is obviously what is in your mind. That it where your mind leads.

NOT MINE. I thought he was speaking of Bristol. I still think he made a mistake. I think people like teleprompter are sick individuals who actually are now trying to politically profit by using Willow and gross allegations to slur other liberals with no connection to Letterman.

I don't watch him. I never did spend more than a few minutes a very, very long time ago watching him and not liking him. I believe he gave an extremely plausible explanation and sincere apology.

It is time for guys like teleprompter to get the 14 year old out of their head. I never even mentioned her until sailwind directly addressed me with a question of which daughter. Now I find the whole lot of you SICK!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

More likely that Letterman got the daughtes mixed up, given the reputation of the older daughter and the nature of the joke. He probaly meant to joke about the 18-yo, but it happened that the 14-yo was the one who came to New York, in which case it would be statutory rape at least.

Not likely. Letterman has been savaging Palin for months. He has a weird fixation on the woman. And as many have pointed out, is it somehow excusable for him to go after Bristol Palin because she is 4 years older? I don't buy the oversight excuse. He has a team of writers. That said, I don't think he deserves to be fired. But I do think a sincere apology is in order.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As Palin explained it was her 14 year-old daughter she went to Yankee Stadium with. Read the original "joke." It's about Yankee shortstop A-Rod and Willow Palin. It's clear we have in Letterman a "liberal" - progressive man, 62 years old, wishing rape upon a 14 year-old girl.

I guess it was much easier for you to make that connection. If the conservatives would not have been the ones to bring a 14 year old into the discussion then everybody would have assumed it was Bristol. But you guys continue to think about the 14 year old. Taka,

Heh, perhaps our friend is refering to the "terror" that rational human beings might have felt, of obviously varying magnitudes, back at the time when she was eligible to become the vice-president of the US. That's scary enough after the Bush Show, but that coupled with a candidate who's ripe old age potentialy could have had him croaking in office and leaving her at the wheel at anytime.....

The radical conservatives at JT seem to think her refusal to shriek back to Alaska is to be seen as a positive - only I get the impression that every time she opens her mouth, or like-minded shrieky mouth-pieces such as limbaugh - it only serves to push the GOP further into the void that the bungling last administation, and of course the disasterous McCain/Palin campaign ticket sent them down.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Madverts,

Although "terrify" is obvious hyperbole (and hilarity), there is one thing about sarah palin that DOES cause at least one "leftie" to have a bit of concern.

If she were to win the GOP nomination in '12, the Democrats would win SO handily that complacency and cockiness could set in. Next thing you know, some of the nuttier folk within the Democratic party would start howling about a "permanent Democratic majority" or some other bit of nonsense, possibly setting the party up for a real step in the wrong direction.

Other than that, she's the gift that keeps on giving.

Smitty,

No one should have to apologize for being a dolt. That's the same as saying people should apologize for being gay. That's just what she is.

I have to admit, Letterman really shocked me and palin was was definitely wronged. What's even more shocking is that the same people who have put Bill and Hillary Clinton through far worse are so quick to throw out the victim card, which in a few short months has already become quite dog-eared. Pace yourself, guys.

Give it a rest sailwind. If you've read the thread, then you know I'm not saying the comments are defendable. They're in-appropriate.

When you're a public figure, you've got to expect nasty attacks from all round, and let's face it, palin is pretty well qualified at giving sustainable fodder to her critics.

I've failed to notice you lambasting commentators such as rush the shriek Limbaugh - in fact, I almost remember you defending that horror mike savage the other day....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nothing more and nothing less.....is what I meant to end with.

Letterman needs to be totally condemned for speaking of impregnating one of Sarah's daughters

Which one? Bristol? Or Willow age 14? After it was Willow that attended the Yankee game with her not Bristol. Sex with a 14 year old is called rape.

He deserves to burn in hell. He needs to write a written apology over and over until his hand breaks off.

Your "sincerity" shines thru in that comment.

The death penalty is the only way to right manner to deal with these comments.

As does your Adverts.

This is actually one issue that you both should put your partisan B.S on the shelf for once. The man is a 62 year old jerk that made a mean spiteful joke and a lame attempt at humor, involving an innocent young girl. If the best you can do is belittle that in a sorry attempt just to get your slams in on Palin, I think your moral compass could really use some major adjustments.

I would be just as incensed if he made the same lame jokes at Chelsea Clinton if this was during the Clinton Presidency and not Obama's. I would hold just as accountable as I'm doing now. Leave the children out of it. It is plain human decency nothing and more nothing less.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

sailwind says I defended Letterman. Where did I defend Letterman? I simply oppose people like you calling it rape. You never said Levi raped Bristol now did you? It is dishonest to say I defended Letterman. In my opinion it is equally dishonest to use the word rape in this instance.

Letterman needs to be totally condemned for speaking of impregnating one of Sarah's daughters. He deserves to burn in hell. He needs to write a written apology over and over until his hand breaks off.

By the say sailwind I already read your reference to NOW. You are being repetitive. Please do not continue to say things about me that are not true. I never defended Letterman. I know you get upset when someone points out that you overstated your position as in using the term "rape" but that is no reason to spread falsehoods about me.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

P:S And Palin's side also.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I already addressed Letterman's behavior by stating, "It was inappropriate of David Letterman."

Now that is a "real slam" on the man. His behavior was "inappropriate".

Palin made it clear with the statement "it was time for people to rise up against Letterman’s form of humor" that she endorses the puritanical witch hunts of the past. Maybe she would like to make it a movement. Considering that more comedians use a much lower form of low brow humor than "Letterman's form of humor" she is talking about a vast number of comedians and entertainers. But like I tirelessly state, the conservatives are control freaks and can't wait to impose the limitations they used in the past. It is always about dragging us back into the past or preventing us from moving forward.

The National Organization for Women, no fan of Palin at all would disagree with you on that one. I never thought I'd see the day that you were even further left than I ever thought. You even leave NOW behind.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman's stature, who appears on what used to be known as "the Tiffany Network" (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.

http://www.now.org/issues/media/hall-of-shame/

I'd take up your defense of Letterman there if I were you. They seem to be on my side on this one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wonder if some of the posters here would show such indignation if the joke were about one of President Obama's daughters. Or if they acted with indignation when so many comments were made at Chealsea Clinton's expense.

This whole silly flap is nothing more than a reflection of the level of political discourse in the United States.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Most of the conservatives on this thread are playing this for all it's worth. They have used the term "rape" because their media moguls told them too.

Here is a perfect example of someone trying to capitalize on the moment.

Sarah Palin should never complain about a joke that her daughter got raped ... [I'll refrain from quoting the entire lame sarcasm as it has reached ad nauseum.]

/

The man makes sexual perverted jokes about her and her daughter,

The poster went on to say that I had the audacity to think Palin should apologize after Letterman made such comments. I already addressed Letterman's behavior by stating, "It was inappropriate of David Letterman." Maybe the poster does not realize the two apologies can be mutually exclusive. Since when did thinking two people should apologize for unrelated issues become surreal? Talk about a flair for drama. Of course there was more than one Drama Queen; all the rest of the opportunistic conservatives were overplaying their hand in equally dramatic fashion.

Was it sexual perversion when Levi got Bristol pregnant? Letterman may have used a crass term but he was speaking of pregnancy. I am quite sure mentioning the words "knocked up" were not used sparingly in reference to Levi's actions but in this case it is a "sexually perverted" reference.

Hell, most liberals I know WANT sarah palin to win the '12 GOP nomination.

It would greatly please me if she won the '12 GOP nomination. But I don't give that any chance. All the Republican candidates at that time will tear her to shreds. You think she looked bad with well arranged interviews and so few debates; the other Republicans will crush her. They will not have to manhandle her. They can use kid gloves and still demolish her. She has about 1/10 as many brain cells (metaphorically speaking) as Hillary does. Hillary definitely had to squirm in the heat. If Palin's handlers encourage her to run or if she ignores their advise not to run it will be the biggest mistake of her political life. She is going to go out hunting moose with her rifle and the moose are going to have tow missiles and know how to use them. The campaign trail is no place for candidates with double digit IQ's.

By the way can you imagine what these ranting conservatives would have wanted to do with Lenny Bruce? Palin made it clear with the statement "it was time for people to rise up against Letterman’s form of humor" that she endorses the puritanical witch hunts of the past. Maybe she would like to make it a movement. Considering that more comedians use a much lower form of low brow humor than "Letterman's form of humor" she is talking about a vast number of comedians and entertainers. But like I tirelessly state, the conservatives are control freaks and can't wait to impose the limitations they used in the past. It is always about dragging us back into the past or preventing us from moving forward.

And yes, if Letterman needs to apologize 'to women world-wide' than Palin needs to apologize to everyone for being such a dolt.

Anyway, if you need proof that people don't take Palin seriously, look at how much media attention, and how much more popular Letterman is getting, as a result. Plus, there was a pretty funny Palin interview the other day where she... wait for it... made an a$$ of herself once again. Nothing can beat her Couric interview, but you go on ahead and keep insisting she is an intelligent and important politician. I'm going to watch the Couric interview again just for a laugh.

Palin needs to apologize to humanity for being so utterly stupid.

To all of humanity? What a bizarre statement, even for you.

She's a former executive and journalist.

Palin has nothing but her own personal interests at heart, to the detriment of both her family and her country. Whether it's accepting designer clothes that your taxes paid for, or covering up her daughter's illegitimate babies.

How many times do you need to be told? - the RNC paid for the clothes.

One more time: McCain's campaign staff requested she get her family new clothes.

When did she "cover up" her daughter's "illegitimate babies"? There was one. She never tried to hide a thing. Her daughter Bristol is an unwed mother at 18 - as was Obama's. You'd think people might consider how creepy these attacks are in light of the parallels...

It is amazing. Palin terrifies not only American Lefties but the foreign ones as well.

Seems to me Palin would be pretty much out of the news except that Libs just won't leave her be. You'd never know the Democrat Party has the WH, Congress and the Senate. I hit a lot of conservative/Libertarian sites and Palin was somewhat in the background once the election was over.

I see these attacks and I chalk em up to the mental derangement that 8 years of spoon-banging and shakin angry lil fists at Bush has done.

The need to hate is just too powerful for many on the Left. Obama, the consummate narcissist, has tapped this powerful animus and intends to exploit it for a while yet. When they finish with Palin they'll find someone else.

It was inappropriate of David Letterman. Having said that Palin is the biggest joke of a person in America since V.P. Quyale.

She is a great bellwether of someone's intellegence. If someone can't see she is dumb as a rock they are never going to get on the Dean's List and are certainly never cum laude candidates. Best to keep them away from the sharp utensils also. If these conservatives would just admit that they are sexually attracted to her and that is the source of their chilvary we would not have to hear their endless showman defences of her.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Presto - Yeah you're right on it. The Founding Fathers stipulated you can only have free speech if you are nice and don't hurt anyone's feelings. There's no law against not having empathy. How would one enforce that anyway if there were? Should she take him to court for that? "Judge, Dave hurt my feelings!" Did you read your post? Dave messed up a joke, so what. I didn't even remember Palin had a second daughter until I read the article. Everyone only talks about the unwed mom, who is a testament to Palin's disasterous belief system. First thing I thought reading the article was, "isn't her daughter 18 and legal? Who's Willow?" Dave probably heard she was in town with her daughter and thought she was there with Bristol. I know that's what I thought. Dave just made an oopsie. It happens, Palin needs to get over it. We all know how well her moral lessons work. We don't need more failure from her in that arena.

we are Americans, and freedom of speech is a right and not a privilege for the party elite

You can substitute (random) Frenchmen, Britons, Dutchmen, Germans, Europeans, etc. etc. for Americans. They all pride themselves in the right to freedom of speech. But let's ask ourselves, does that right include the right to hurt the feelings of one's fellowmen? Does this mean one can say anything that pops into one's mind? I don't think so. Freedom of speech does not mean you can do away with respect, restraint, common sense, empathy.

Time for you guys to find yourselves a new fresh piece before the place starts smelling worse than it is......

Now a song for my far right wing friends, hit it Sam....

Turn out the lights the party is dead.......err over.......sorry was looking to the next election! LOL

buddha - "I do not like Palin the politician" What's not to like?

Sarge, if the Obamaniacs are too much for you, then why do you sound like them when Palin's name comes up? She has never impressed me politically (even on issues where I tend to be more conservative) and now she is just a political celebrity having it out with TV comedian. Sorry.

The angry mom, I get. Beyond that she is a famous person with some power and influence and there are a lot of people like that in this world.

Letterman is an a$$hole, but there are plenty around who get a kick out of those characters cracking jokes and making derogatory remarks at the expense of others.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

JoeBigs I have no idea why you would lump me with the "far right wingers" just because I think Letterman made an oopsy on TV. I do not like Palin the politician but that does not blind me to the fact that Letterman sought to needle her through her children. That would get most parents riled - even a liberal like me.

He doesn't get a pass because he is a comedian, that's part of the job description - failure. And failure is not failure if there are no consequences. Colbert flirted with failure when he roast Bush and the Media several years ago. He succeeded because he was able walk the audacious line; Letterman didn't and now he is paying the price.

I'd like to think that regardless of political affiliation, joking about someones daughter being raped, be they a politician or no, would receive equal condemnation from both sides. I'm sorry to see this is not the case. If Rush Limbaugh came out and made the same joke, let me tell ya, I for one would be saying he needs to apologize. Sad seeing that people on the left still want to defend Letterman because they hate Palin so much.

Guess it says more about them then anything else.

BTW how would you far right wingers compare Palin to Thatcher? Do you think that she could hold her own with that marvel of a woman?

I found Thatcher to be a more interesting women than Palin would ever think to be. I for one find it more interesting when a woman can discuss current affairs than the color of her hair.

Take my wife, (well not in a Henny Youngman sort of way) She makes me think, she talks to me and she makes me think of my responses.............I do not know about anyone else, but I for one like it when my partner makes me think.

I would hate a babe with looks and no brains. Those I have learned in my time make me very bored.

I like a women who can answer some of my questions and toss back some darn good questions....Hell is that not what anyone of us is really looking for, a partner who makes you think?

Well correction, unless you are a far right winger!!!LOL

They like`em barefoot and pregnant!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

In my book any politician who tries to use their kids to gain favor needs to go....In this case Palin and her slave need to go bye bye,.....No later but sooner.....

Who is it thats trying to use their kids to gain favor? Who is it that keeps constantly bringing up her kids? Palin's kids came up because it came out that her older daughter was pregnant, and at the time was underage and unmarried. She wasn't trying to use her daughter to gain airtime. If anything, she did her best to downplay the whole affair.

I don't like Letterman, and this joke is just another example of why I don't like the man. While he definitely deserves to squirm, after joking about Palin's 14 year old daughter getting knocked up. Oh, and a 30 something year old man having sex with a 14 year old girl is rape by the way. However I don't believe he intended her to be the target, but rather the 18 year old daughter. That doesn't make the joke any better however. Regardless of who the target was, going after the child of a politician is pretty sleazy. Not enough to be fired over, but in my mind, he definitely should apologize for it.

Nessie - In fairness to Letterman, it's hard to sort the trash in that family. He goofed on the daughter, provided a plausible explanation and an apology, and gave Palin a forum. That's where it should end.

Exactly. He should apologize, he hasn't done so yet, but he should, and thats where it should end.

Where does JoeBigs get this stuff? Jeez, that must be why the first female secretary of state was a Republican.

Er, Sarge, I believe the first female secretary of state was Madelaine Albright, definitely a Dem. The first black female Secretary of State was a Republican. As was the first male black Secretary of State.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well it is so refreshing to hear from a superior intellectuals on J.T that Sarah Palin shouldn't at all be upset that David Letterman went after her daughter in a sorry attempt at 'humor'.

After all, they just do the same thing and have no qualms at showing how crass and tasteless they are also when it comes to Sarah Palin. I was always curious though as to how they think they are so 'superior' to Sarah Palin that they feel they can attack her family and condone it. True 'liberal class' once again on display by the pretentious bunch.

SezWho2 at 04:24 PM JST - 13th June sailwind, If you will check you will find that neither JoeBigs nor SezWho2 said what you claim. I think that puts you rather squarely into one of three camps--illiterate, careless or diversionistic. Shall we sign you up for the last of these three? Letterman's joke was tasteless, as are many of his jokes. Nowhere did he say that Palin's daughter was "raped" (as neither did Palin when announcing the pregnancy of her daughter) and your use of that word is intentionally inflammatory. The term Letterman used was "knocked up". Clearly, the audience got a chuckle because not even a "LAUGH" card will override moral outrage.

Sezwho, you are correct, but in the world of far right wing politics correctness is not important. It is better to slander and pander to the base rather than to be correct.

But slowly, "too slowly in my book" Americans are beginning to see the faults of the far right and the far right is paying for it.

Palin is trying to make herself out to be the new defender of all women rights. But her party has had an all out assault against open minded women for over 70 years. How can she or her party expect to be trusted when they themselves will not trust women. Hell the far right would rather trust a Guckert than a women.

She has been attempting to find a platform that would bring women to her side, and using her own kids is nothing new. She and her supporters may claim many things but facts are hell to hide from. She is just another in a long line of republicans whose only hope to reach the White House is if she lie to get there, and in her book so be it..

It appears more and more that she and her husband are willing to do anything to get there. This includes lying betraying our nations, or throwing their kids under the bus to get there.

In my book any politician who tries to use their kids to gain favor needs to go....In this case Palin and her slave need to go bye bye,.....No later but sooner.....

Hell she would rather stir the hate pot than try to fix it, is there any other proof of who she is?

SezWho2 at 09:22 AM JST - 13th June Tasteless? Maybe. We like tasteless jokes--except when we don't.

Most comics in America live off making fun of others. They make fun of politicians and most of America loves them.

Most Politicians who have a brain will try to be the butt of these jokes and will try to be on the comics shows. The really stupid one will try and make a stand at the expense of these comics.

Usually these stupid politicians careers fall as they try and fight these icon comics. Palin and her endless wisdom has decided to try and make Letterman her future. But she will soon find out that most Americans love their comics and hate politicians who can not take a joke.

In her case Americans hate politicians who lie about a joke.....Soon her career will end as most other stupid politicians careers have also ended.

Her 15 minutes of fame will soon come to a bloody end, but her brainless supporters will still try and defend her.

History is a mean sob that strikes you in the place where it hurts most.

Letterman 30 years of making us laugh, Palin just under 2 years, who do you think will win?LOL

God I love when the far right keeps hammering in those nails themselves!!! Who the hell are handlers?LOL

So bloody stupid I think!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Doesn't politics such, left wing treehuggers and right wing zealots one and all.

As I pointed out earlier, politics here is the last issue you should be considering. This somewhat risque joke was directed at Palin's daughter who happens to be a minor. That is the only issue relevant to this discussion and I believe that Letterman should be made to squirm because of it.

On another level, I don't think bias can be analyzed in terms of a left/right paradigm. When Clinton was in the White House, his daughter was off limits until such time as she grew up. So were Bush's daughters. They were not criticized until they started to get on the booze.

At a higher level, all President's get an easy ride from the media until such time as the fxck up in a big way. Clinton got a good ride until he started doing cigar tricks in the oval office. Even G.W. was a media darling immiedately after 911, before he started filling body bags with American kids (and worse). In a contemporarty sense, Barack Obama is still flavor of the month, and he will probably continue to be so until such time as he places his foot in his mouth (or does something equally stupid).

Finally, sometimes I wish those in the media were subjected to some of the (unwelcome) attention that they themselves generate. It doesn't have to be Palin, but as somebody who believes that kids should be left out of politics at least until they are old enough, I would love somebody to rip Letterman a new arxehole over this joke.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

hoserfella,

I'm pretty sure you don't have daughter. If you did you would feel differently about a joke about raping one.

How dare Sarah Palin get upset at this, who does she think she is a mother protecting her daughter? The NERVE.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The jokes were totally within reason and actually funny. Ill bet Palin is more upset about her slutty air stewardess comparison (also true) As for Letterman. He is the funniest thing on American television. People who don't get his humour should stick to the easier, more obvious newspaper jokes of lame-os like Leno.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I have been reading about this for a few and it is down right stupid. In aa attempt to stay in the news Palin is throwing another one of her kids under the bus. This time it is her 14 year old.

Letterman made a quick joke about Palins 18 year old and Palin and her team of want a be dictators try to blow it out of this world by claiming that Letterman was talking about their 14 year old kid.

Funny thing is Letterman goes on liove national TV after the fact to get the Palin B.S. story correct and lays it all out. But then the Palin strike back by claiming that Letterman in some sort or Pervert who wants to go after their 14 year old kid.

But the joke was never about their 14 year old kid.......These Palins are some sickos to toss their kids under the bus to try to be in the news.....

Someday they will have to pay for their sickness......

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't think an apology is necessary. Palin made her family an issue. When she did that, she made them fair game for tasteless jokes.

If we had wanted to have good taste, we wouldn't have stopped being British.

palin's right. Dave owes her, and her family an apology and a far better one than was given. I think coughing up some major gomen money to a charity for Down's Syndrome would provide some much needed grease to the forgiveness sled, but first and foremost, a serious apology is owed on this one.

Taka

0 ( +0 / -0 )

flies her kids everywhere, dines in restaurants and hotels with them in tow while on government business, etc. I'm not saying it excuses anyone else, and they should have to pay for such things as well.

Let me explain a few things about being on the "government dime" when

taking trips. Normally the person in an official status is the one that is getting the travel and per diem paid for by the government. If family members are going along, then they are drawing such entitlements, but the person who is on official duties has to pay for them out of their own pocket. I have done this on several occasions. My work takes me someplace, and I get the free trip. The wife can come along, since I have to pay for it out of my own pocket. The end result is, instead of me paying for a trip for two, I only pay for one.

I consider myself on the right, but to be honest I don't like the politics of Palin. BUt, just becuase I don't like her stance on issues, does not mean that I have to go after her family to voice my disagreement. I go after her on policy, not family. Since many believe that there is not a "left media bias" I can't wait until Letterman and the rest go after Cher's daughter who has decided to have a sex change operatioin. She/he is a grown adult, and they (Cher) decided to make it public so according to how some on the left think she should be fair game for the ridicule and jokes. But I doubt if you see any. Once Rush makes a comment (I don't really like his politics either) you will hear an outcry from all the Gay and Transgender organizations asking for his removal, and Maddow on MSNBC will probably issue a blisering attack. But no such thing for a 61 year old man going after a 14 year old girl.

Hey Smith,

She went to New York State for this reason with her family.

to address a fundraising dinner in St. James hosted by an agency for the developmentally disabled.

Palin, who rocketed to fame last summer when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) picked her to be his vice presidential running mate, will speak to and be honored at the $125-a-plate dinner of Independent Group Home Living, her spokeswoman confirmed yesterday.

Palin's 1-year-old son, Trig, was born with Down syndrome. Palin declared herself an advocate for developmentally disabled children during her September speech to the Republican National Convention.

"We wanted to honor her as a mother who has a special-needs child, to try and bring as much exposure as we could for families who do have these special-needs children," said Frank Lombardi of the IGHL Foundation.

Letterman also said palin looks like a sl*tty stewardess. She does, with all the winks and nods. The winger boys like that type apparently. " so, if I said that about your mother, you'd just forget?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Anyway, this is much heat and no fire. Its forgotten in a few days and Palin too will be forgotten in a few months. The USA has enough of stupid leaders for a long, long time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't know the details of all this, but I would assume that Letterman has better things to do with his time than take aim at the family member of a politician who happens to be a minor. Don't know if there was any vicious intent in the joke, but somebody doing research definited stxffed up.

In no way am I a supporter of Palin, but having some clown out in Hollywood take aim at your kids (a minor) does seem to be a pretty low blow. Moreover, I don't like the comparison being made with President Obama's kids. It is not a case of one or the other. All of these children who are minors should be off limits.

Turning to another issue, all this talk about Palin being the front runner for the GOP in 2012 is just hot air. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to realize that Palin's chances of higher office have come and gone. Despite its setbacks, I hope that the GOP develops a fresh crop of talented individuals who are able to obtain a degree of success in public life in the US. Having one party dominate all branches of government is both boring and symptomatic of a democoracy that is not functioning to its fullest capacity. With no voices of opposition who speak out on the issues, accountability goes out the window. And here I am not talking about right-wing reactionary shockjocks, rather I am talking about people who are able to give a reasoned argument about their views and beliefs.

Why ... Sarah Palin owes an apology to mankind!

skipthesong: "smith, she is not even in the top 100 government spenders. Check out Chuck Shumer, if that is what is getting you irked."

I don't care if she's not in the top 100 or not, she accepts expensive clothes on the taxpayer's dime, flies her kids everywhere, dines in restaurants and hotels with them in tow while on government business, etc. I'm not saying it excuses anyone else, and they should have to pay for such things as well.

And yeah, Letterman had heaps of tasteless jokes, and is an arrogant cuss when you get right down to it, but then, that drew him a lot of fans as well. I never watched any of those late night shows, really. Conan was funny from time to time, and Leno makes some pretty good cracks, but Letterman was a long time in retiring.

Anyway, again, doesn't warrant an apology any more than any other hosts jabs or jokes. If she's so angry because she was with Willow while travelling on business, simply don't bring your kids along on the taxpayer's dime and watch.

smith: "Despite Palin being an outright dolt and a laughing stock"

smith continues to confuse Sarah Palin with Tina Fey.

smith: I don't think an apology is necessarily warranted"

That's because you hate Sarah Palin, and don't think she would ever deserve an apology from anyone for anything.

I agree with skip. Letterman's a jerk. His Top Ten list always bites.

If he had said that about my daughter, I wouldn't even bother asking for an apology.

smith, she is not even in the top 100 government spenders. Check out Chuck Shumer, if that is what is getting you irked.

I never liked Lettermen. he's always had tasteless jokes.

Tasteless? Maybe. We like tasteless jokes--except when we don't.

Despite Palin being an outright dolt and a laughing stock, she is right that the joke was tasteless (and was she travelling with her kids on the government dime AGAIN??). That being said, it's not the first tasteless joke, nor will it be the last, and I don't think an apology is necessarily warranted.
