Saudi women begin challenge to driving ban

Sunday drivers!

I am sure our Arab brothers must be quite horrible drivers, and now when our Arab sisters behind the wheel, jump out of the way and get ready for some serious road rage, I am sure these women must have a lot of pent of stress!

Oh boy, a lot of "woman driver" jokes. Those were old fifty years ago. I have personally never known a female driver as bad as the male drivers I've known.

Good on Saudi women for standing up for themselves. It's about time that they pick away at these little rules that keep them down. I bet it's hard, though, knowing that you could suffer serious consequences just for driving.

And no, a ban on driving doesn't mean they necessarily have no driving experience. You don't know where else they might have lived. Even my tiny hometown occasionally gets Saudi families coming over to study/work at the local uni. In this area, driving is a MUST. Otherwise you're stuck at home, since there's no public transport and nothing is within a reasonable walking distance. I bet educated Saudi women who have worked, lived, and studied abroad have been able to learn how to drive.

Here's a link to an editorial from the Christian Science Monitor written by an American female Moslem doctor who spent a couple of years in Saudi Arabia not being able to drive or go outside without a male relative by her side: Dr. Qanta A. Ahmed. Seems subjecting females to a lesser place in society is un-Islamic.

It's times like these when we need to remind ourselves of who we are dealing with.

True. Women just can't drive cars! On the other hand, men also should have no say in the bringing up of children. I have watched a few Japanese (and foreign men) spending time with their children here - they just don't know what they are doing! It's kind of hilarious watching men attempting to bring up kids! Let women do that stuff : let men do driving cars and earning a salary.

Go women go!!! About time these women stood up for themselves and demanded change. Starts with this and will continue to go. Saudi is next in terms of countries going to be a mess with the public demanding change! Can't happen fast enough there!!

I agree with the Islamic clerics, women should not be allowed to drive motor vehicles under any circumstan ha ha ha just kidding!

I remember when a female U.S. military pilot based in Saudi Arabia was irked at being forbidden to drive motor vehicles.

I say go for it and fight. Maybe they should send Rosa Parks to SA and help make the point. I'm not sure if Rosa Parks has passed away or not but if she's still around...send her. She's my hero!

I'm figuring if they are banned from driving they are also banned from owning a drivers license. I hope no one gets run over.
