Amazes me how they can just "lose" an airplane. In these days of GPS and the like surely they can track it quickly. What about signals from peoples mobile phones on board?

GPS is passive, in that the GPS enabled device receives the GPS signals and uses them, it does not need to broadcast to use GPS.

What about signals from peoples mobile phones on board?
