I think you misinterpreted my tone. I am curious to know what someone with knowledge of the systems on the craft thinks what may have happened.

Yes, while most are sleeping, they would surely notice. Those stationed there would also be under orders not to disclose any info either. Some non-military islanders claimed to have seen a plane, though.

There are a LOT of planes there and even some commercial airliners under contract to ferry personnel on and off the island. While there may be orders not to talk about what happens at Diego Garcia, the UCMJ specifically provides for servicemen to be able to blow the whistle on illegal or immoral acts by their command. The hijacking and kidnapping of hundreds of civilians would definitely fall under this category.

And probably the biggest reason your comment is ignorant: If, for some unknown reason, the U.S. needed a plane for a covert operation, they could quietly take one of their own and remove all identifying marks. There's no need to cause an international firestorm by hijacking a civilian airliner full of passengers for the job.

I'm still in the "I dunno..." group until there's any real evidence. So far, there's been none to really support any of the theories including the Southern Arc one, other than faint blips and "partial handshakes".

Sorry. :-) Sometimes I get fed up with the conspiracies that people seem to pull out of their... lower orifices. ;-) I actually entertained the idea of the plane being flown to a remote strip in the Middle East as it was a possible reason for the sudden silence and the course change, but once the Northern route was rejected by the searchers I have no clue why the plane went where it did.

But exactly when the Boeing 777 began running on autopilot is still not known.

For any commercial 777, the A/P is engaged right after lift off and the plane is put into Lateral Navigation (LNAV) and Vertical Navigation (VNAV) modes. There would be no reason to take the plane out of autopilot until almost at the end of the flight when the plane is on final approach for landing. Even changes to the flight plan can be done while the autopilot is active by simply changing from LNAV mode to Heading-Select mode, and from VNAV mode to V/S mode. The question of when the A/P was engaged is a red herring posed by people with no knowledge of how modern autopilots work.

Triple 7's have many ELT's (Emergency Locator Transmitters) that automatically go off when there is a sudden deceleration (crash landings will set them off). These ELTs are located within the aircraft at various points and usually with all slide/rafts so being that this 777-200 has 8 doors, there would be at least 8 of these plus two more at minimum on board and NOT ONE made so much as a peep. This plane either landed somewhere or before it crashed all the ELTs were snatched up and deactivated or a UFO snatched the plane or the plane traveled through a wormhole to another time and place. One seems likely followed by two and the other two, well, as Mulder would say, "spooky".

Time to play "Scully". ELT's are not designed to work under water. Their signals would have been squelched as soon as the part of the plane with the antenna sank below the waves. Even the EPIRB's that are provided with slides/liferafts are designed to float so that the antenna is in the air rather than underwater. Once the plane impacted the water, the ELT's would have triggered, but depending on how the plane broke-up the cable connected to the external antenna could have been one of the first things severed. Regardless, the EPIRBs are packed inside the liferaft and slide packages, and those are opened only if the doors are opened. During an uncontrolled impact with the water those doors would never be opened and the slides never released. So no ELT signals and no rafts with EPIRB signals is not "spooky", but to be expected in any situation except for a controlled water-landing.

I fear that some group of nutters has landed this plane up towards the dessert flats and will use this plane when everyone has forgot all about it do some nasty 9/11 like damage with it or worse. I am sure that the 'super powers' have thought about this too and have a plan to find this plane but I'm sure we will never hear about that search or that possibility. I just hope they find this plane soon and put to rest the suffering of all the families and loved ones waiting for an answer.

Where is the island that the command pilot was planning to land in his simulator? Down in the South Indian Ocean according to reports? Why not just disclose the location and show us some pictures? And have the other reports such as the wreckage seen in the Andaman Islands been properly checked out? Guess the 'powers that be' are hoping that we'll all forget about it...
