As much as I want U.S. troops out of Afghanistan after 18 years, let's not ignore the fact that without U.S. military intervention, Afghanistan would not be having this election, the entire country would under control of the Taliban and no girls would be going to school.

Why are the Taliban so afraid of the Voice of the People?

These people are amazing, braving death to simply vote, as hopeless as it may seem. They put the west to shame.
I think the US has no business here on one hand, but on the other hand, I don't want to see these wonderful people thrown to the Taliban wolves.

What is needed kin Afghanistan is UN peace keepers not US military. It is the US that is responsible for most of the problems in Afghanistan. As normal, the more the US interferes the worst the situation gets. One should also note that the US helped train and finance the Taliban.

@Riperez: "One should also note that the US helped train and finance the Taliban."
But did they? I thought (and I stand to be corrected here!!!) they armed & trained the Mujahadin against the Sov "invaders" AND the Taliban, and then became the Northern Alliance?

Do you have some sort of crystal ball to tell you want would have happened 20 years after any sort of event? For all we know, without America's devil may care warring for profit, Afghanistan might be a paragon of democracy by now. Instead we have had near 20 years of droning, bomb dropping, check point machine gunning, door kicking and home invading, and who knows how many dead because the American military industrial complex sees dollar signs in instability, invasion and shoot 'em ups.
Yeah, they would not be having this election. This election might not have even been necessary if the U.S. government and powers that be were not greedy murdering dregs.

This will will blow your mind but if there is no Taliban candidate on the ballot, its a bogus election. Call it democracy if you like, but its not without Taliban candidates. Think about it.
