A very reasonable concern. Many of the illegal weapons in Europe used by criminal gangs are surplus from the wars in Yugoslavia. The numerous grenade attacks in Sweden are all carried out using old Yugoslav M75 hand grenades.

I would agree to have the right to bear a handgun for self-defense after a rigorous evaluation (if you are a business owner, a lawyer, or other concrete reason why you need a gun) and months of waiting, anything beyond that is just madness.

Law abiding citizens in most countries have access to firearms. Including Japan. I grew up using rifles and shotguns in rural New Zealand. They just impose more conditions.

That's a good thing. Then you'd agree it is the non-law abiding citizens with access to firearms that cause all the problems with them.

Sure. That's a neat tautology. But the problems arise when non-law abiding citizens have just as much access to firearms as law-abiding ones, due to lack of meaningful character evaluations, absence of safe-storage laws, and background check-free private sales, for example. 

You have far less gun violence in places where that access is heavily restricted, like Denmark or Japan.

I've always maintained; target the people, not the weapons themselves.

The demographics of the US contribute to the non-law abiding citizens getting motivated to gain access to firearms. Japan, Denmark, NZ, etc. do not have similar environments.

Denmark has amongst the strictest gun laws in Europe alongside the UK, so what are you on about? Japan isn't massacre-free either. It just recently had a mass-murder committed with gasoline in Osaka that eclipsed any recent shooting in Europe.
