You should never encourage shoddy work or materials. -always buy expect quality and expect it to last.

Welding is dangerous. Had a welder cut into a hydraulic line (oil) and took out a whole waste-paper warehouse locally. Fine paper or other carbohydrates (grain dust) are some of the most flammable things = every year a grain elevator/silo/food processor will blow up. Sugar plant down in Savannah 2yrs ago. The dust from the construction could have easily caused a fire if it was flammable -but usually it is not.

Hillbilly fire logic: never run up the hill in a fire scenario. =In a building always go down if there is a fire.

I guess some people forgot about the shoddy work in Japan when it came to building earthquake-proof apartments. These things happen in many countries. I see the article on India got fewer snide remarks.

imomofo it's not the same. We are not bashing the victims we are bashing shoddy Chinese standards. I was in Taiwan in 99 and a few months later back in Japan, that city in Taiwan had a quake and shoddy buildings fell killing people. The construction companies took shortcuts and there were gaps in concrete filled more with garbage where concrete should have been. China is known for it's crap quality and this only proves it. Yes it's too bad for the victims. One day China may have standards but I doubt it.

not surprising, considering that about a quarter of the world population lives in china. Now that they are living in high rises instead of hovels, this kind of thing should happen more in the future.

You used to hear about things like this in Philly or Chicago, and now that you consider all of these buildings going up in China, international news of disasters is going to be filled with China China China for at least the next decade. It does not surprise me. Probability explains it.

To the people taking this opportunity to bash China just because it's Chinese news, I got to say you people got class and probably would do fine as a SS guard back in WW2 in Austwitz gassing the state's enemies or information extractor at Abu Ghraib. Victims of disasters are the same everywhere. Instead of expressing sympathy and condolensces to the people who perished, you took the time to bash the 'skill' of Chinese construction. For the 'mericans(which the majority of us on here are), this is akin to foreigners pointing out how shoddy the WTC towers construction were the day it collapsed. Sympathy and generosity goes a long ways, people. You just never know when you're are going to be needy enough to be on the receiving end yourself, yeah, even you anonymous brave armchair internet commentator hiding behind your screen handle and proxy servers.

Just shows how lapse the Chinese are about safety, quality control and construction standards. A lot of the skyscrapers over there are actually very jerry-built.

I agree. China lacks any quality control, quality assurance or good standards at all. Name one Chinese product you know that is known worldwide as high quality.

Anytime a disaster happens in China or India, a lot of people get taken out. Still, hate to see this happen anywhere.

Tokyotom : what you have speculated might be one of the causes. Like most of incidents/accidents, such accident needs the necessary condition of a series of errors to make it happen..

Could happen anywhere, any time. Do you not recall the world's biggest luxury cruise liner catching fire JUST before it was finished and being totalled? As was the case then, it was probably caused by someone being irresponsible (ie. smoking where they shouldn't have been). Regardless, the end result is the same, and that is one of tragedy. RIP to the victims.
