Gotta wonder what the plan was, assuming there was any plan after "get out of prison."
Not the sharpest tacks in the box.
In a week, they should have been able to get to an unwatched US/Canadian border crossing. There are a number of those and even more that are manned during the day, but not at night. It is hard to monitor a 5,000 mile border.
