Yet he got a gun.
lostrune2
Buyers to disclose? Goodness, nobody would "conveniently not remember," right? Where's the required background check
sf2k
So they gave him guns! FacePalm USA
Your 234th mass shooting this year
I can't even...
smithinjapan
And still had access to all the guns he wanted. Well done again, US!
sf2k
234th shooting on the 239th day of the year. Travel advisories on USA?
CrazyJoe
Isolation and resentment coupled with easy access to firearms. Same as always. Isolation and resentment are much harder to fix.

It's illegal to own a gun if you have been hospitalised for mental illness, but the admission is voluntary? "I just got out of a mental institution. I want to buy a gun." Yeah, that works, NOT! As a result, he walked out of the store with two hand guns. However, due to there being so many guns in the US it is quite easy to buy a gun on the blackmarket without any checks at all. There are so many guns in the US they cannot accurately estimate just how many there are. Some conservative estimates are 3 guns per person. Others estimate there may be as many as a dozen privately owned guns per person in the US. There are around 35,000 gun related deaths in the US every year, over 60% of which are suicides. Only around 30% are violent crime related deaths and the other 10% are accidental deaths, usually children. Since they started collected records in 1968 there has been more people killed in domestic gun violence than were killed in all the US wars since WW1. It's absolutely absurd!
Andrew Crisp
Take a look at how many mass shooters were on similar drugs - research needs to be done on the role that these drugs had.
sf2k
sounds like the whole family needed a psychiatrist
Sneezy
Good thing he was allowed to buy guns, otherwise those kids would still be alive.
I wonder is Texas A&M will apologise for needlessly politicising a tragedy by accusing the shooter of doing it because he was anti-Trump with absolutely no evidence. I'm not holding my breath.
Sneezy
Why not do research on how many mass shooters use guns? I expect there's a close correlation there. Crossbows should also be banned IMO.
Kabukilover
This killer should not have had a gun. Why did he?
WA4TKG
First of all, this psyco is / was from MARYLAND, NOT Florida.
Secondly, he had been hosptalised for mental illness, I agree with whoever said it should be THEY
who report this to some register, hence, there would have been NO LEGAL sale of any firearm(s).
Yup, sounds like the "System" is STILL broken to me. Fix it.
gogogo
........ YET he was still sold a gun! #stupidAmericanGunLaws

@meanringo
Come on man, there's been video game tournaments since the 1970's and they aren't limited to the US. Relax.
Thunderbird2
And yet...
Nuff said...
Just ban the bloody things
theFu
System is broke if it doesn't require mental health professionals to disclose in the NICS about this type of individual. Self-reporting won't work. Obviously, people lie about themselves. HIPPA allows it, but doesn't demand it. If he was admitted to a mental health facility, THEY should have reported him. Start there. That seems to be the failure point.
Mother needs to be in the NICS DB too.
Among them are the following mental health prohibitors, which
provide that it is unlawful for the following individuals to possess a
firearm:
those otherwise determined by a court, board, commission or other
lawful authority to be a danger to themselves or unable to manage their
own affairs as a result of marked subnormal intelligence, or mental
worthless
Is there a source for this? It does not appear in the above article.

The one who made that law should be up for an award for being an idiot. Why would anyone wanting a gun disclose any form of mental illness.
Anyone buying a gun should go through a medical to check for their mental abilities.
extanker
Law enforcement in Switzerland is allowed to contact doctors to discuss medical issues before issuing a permit for a firearm. I have no problem with this, look at Switzerland's gun ownership rate compared to their firearm homicide rate. It really is the person, not the gun. Plus, it's just too late to ban guns in the US, the genie is out of the bottle, but there are other things that can work. I don't mind waiting a few extra days to buy a gun.

*Federal law requires gun buyers to disclose whether they have ever been involuntarily committed to a mental institution.*
__
There is actually a law now in Maryland that the family of anyone considered an imminent threat can go to court and get a temporary order that allows the police to confiscate that person’s guns. Another route would be if an involuntary commitment had been adjudicated though the legal system. That would be the only way it would show up on a background check and even then it would probably have had to have been for a month. Assuming the dangerously mentally ill could reliably be identified and then kept away from firearms, everyone would be for that but taking guns out of the hands of the small percentage of violently deranged is much more likely to result in fewer suicides than to save the life of anyone else.

Andrew Crisp,
You make a very good point.
The whole psych/pharma connection needs to be investigated and the actual effect of the drugs they are dishing out.

bass4funk,
It is due to mental "health" institutions that this situation arose.
The guy had plenty of mental health "help," but it didn't work. That's the point of this article.
Reopening institutions that weren't effective in the first place is not going to solve the problem.
The U.S.A. leads the world in psych drug use.

Worthless: in a separate threa, Mr. A&M made this claim. You are correct that there is no evidence.
mukashiyokatta
It was the pharmaceuticals.
MeanRingo
What? They have video game tournaments these days? Trump really is MAGA. Meh.
bass4funk
I think we should re-open mental institutions, because mental illness in the US is more dangerous than guns. Do that and watch the murder rate in many poor areas go down.
BertieWooster
Shows you how totally ineffective psych is, doesn't it?
