Just one more "achievement" Trump can add to his failure of a presidency.

Easy fix give Donald the money for his wall, America spends billions on stuff that does very little so why not on something that protects the American citizen - parts of the wall are currently getting upgraded to the standard that is wanted, its not that big a deal.

You clearly don't understand how politics work.

Last year Republicans were in charge of both chambers of Congress and the presidency. Yet Oct. 1 rolled around without a budget in place for roughly a quarter of the federal government.

There is no more fundamental responsibility of Congress than passing a budget for the federal government. Republicans kept claiming that they would return to "regular order" and actually pass appropriations bills in time to avoid the drama and gamesmanship of continuing resolutions under the threat of a government shutdown.

Their failure to do so deserves all of the blame for the impasse. If they had done their job, as they pledged to do, the federal government would be fully funded for the year and no one would have the leverage to shut it down or for it to be used as political brinkmanship by either party.

LOL! With all these unhappy unpaid workers, all of Dump's bankruptcies make so much sense now!

Worst President Ever! Hahahaha!

Chip Star - succinctly summed up.

Trump/Repubs failed to act responsibly when the ball was totally in their court. Too full of themselves.

Now Trumps crying foul play. Classic Loser's comment.

And people are suffering.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Too bad he can't shut it down permanently. Then Americans would have to figure out how to do the important things themselves, probably at a tiny fraction of the current federal budget.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Then Americans would have to figure out how to do the important things themselves

We already know how to, which is why we have the world's largest economy. The government is there to ensure a level playing field. You're welcome for the lesson.

I though we learned in school that governments are elected not to be rulers and masters but to be servants of the people.

Individualism is a core of American culture and the main value in America.

The Constitution created a country in which the individual’s rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness are recognized and protected.

It simply isn't the government's role to hand over medals to all regardless of effort, merit, achievement, as socialists and leftists would have it.

No soup for you!

The real National Emergency is Trump's deteriorating mental and emotional health. It's time Republicans quit ignoring the huge elephant in the room with an orange headdress. It's only going to get worse.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Keep the gov shut. Another caravan will be on the way. Eventually those invaders will try & breech the border. Then, BP will gas them. CNN will say (fake news) they were treated “inhumanly.”

Some dehydrated, sick kid(s) will probably die as they reach the border only to put the blame on the US authorities.

The US needs that wall, barrier, steel fence.......whatever you want to call it. Oh, btw, loved how Jim Acosta illustrated the point during his last vid he made at US-Mexico border.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

The Trump crowd seems to have latched on to this bizarre argument: America doesn't need this 1/3 of government anyway - it's dispensable compared with border security - yet this 1/3 of government not being paid includes those charged with border security.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Individualism is a core of American culture and the main value in America.

@Miyam_Muasashi - your post was all over the place so wasn't sure exactly what point you were trying to make our smart relevance it had to the news story.

However, the values that are self-ascribed to the USA are exaggerated - it has quite a conformist mainstream culture. This is a country where elementary school children are forced to pledge allegiance to the flag on a daily basis.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

It's not about the $5 billion, it's about denying Trump a victory. You have the Angel families on Trump's side. You have the border patrol agents on his side. That should be enough for the American people to see who's on the right side of this issue.

Again, if walls don't work... wait, Jim Acosta just proved it! Thanks. Jim!

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

It's not about the $5 billion, it's about denying Trump a victory.

Why does it need to be a victory? Can't the man just do his job without having to be seen to have beaten somebody? How likely are Democrats to co-operate if Trump were then to crow about how he beat them?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It's not about the $5 billion, it's about denying Trump a victory.

What victory? That Mexico paid for the wall? That the wall is pre-caste concrete? It's a fence? It's a barrier? He's already lost. Add in endangering our country by defunding TSA and the Coast Guard and it's a double-loss...

You have the Angel families on Trump's side. .You have the border patrol agents on his side. That should be enough for the American people to see who's on the right side of this issue.

You have ISIS too...Trump is making it much easier for them to come in our country thru our air and sea ports...

Again, if walls don't work... wait, Jim Acosta just proved it! Thanks. Jim!

Another Trumper converted from Faux News to CNN! Let's keep it up!

But the real loss this week was Trump learning Manafort was openly colluding with Russians by sharing campaign data.

"No collusion, no collusion" has become "Well, yes collusion, yes collusion"...

Donnie will have lots of time to check out concrete walls at Leavenworth...

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Trump again, adding one more victory notch on his belt. Hold the line.

The real National Emergency is Trump's deteriorating mental and emotional health. It's time Republicans quit ignoring the huge elephant in the room with an orange headdress. It's only going to get worse.

He got a clean bill of health last year, so since that idea was shot to pieces, what now? Also, why would the GOP go against Trump when his popularity is so high among Republicans? He should dig in his heels and if federal workers don’t get paid, sad as it is, the bigger picture is not having a safe closed border

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

How petty are the Dems that they won’t do anything for the American people unless they get a political win from it?

How likely are Democrats to co-operate if Trump were then to crow about how he beat them?

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

why do liberals always have to pivot from the topic they are losing to Russia as proof they aren’t losing? Russia has nothing to do with our border security between us and Mexico.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

What victory? That Mexico paid for the wall? That the wall is pre-caste concrete? It's a fence? It's a barrier? He's already lost. Add in endangering our country by defunding TSA and the Coast Guard and it's a double-loss...

And the Democrats are endangering the country by allowing the drugs and illegal aliens to cross the border. Funny, none of these cowardly Democrats will talk to any angel parent or the families of murdered police officers and border patrol officers, why? They Dems are confident in their positions and yet they won’t meet or talk to any of these people.

You have ISIS too...Trump is making it much easier for them to come in our country thru our air and sea ports...

But we are talking about the Mexican border as pourous as it is.

Donnie will have lots of time to check out concrete walls at Leavenworth

How? He won’t be convicted or even be removed. There will never be 2/3 of a vote in the GOP Congress to remove him.

Who do Americans blame more for the government shutdown:

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trump-has-lost-ground-in-the-shutdown-blame-game/

More Americans blame Trump for the government shutdown

The two YouGov polls found a 4-point increase in those blaming Trump. There was a 4-point increase among registered voters who most blamed Trump in the two Morning Consult polls. And surveys from Reuters/Ipsos also found a 4-point increase.

Blame against Democrats hasn’t changed much

As for where Democrats stand in the blame-game, Morning Consult found a 2-point increase in those who blame them the most between their two polls, while Ipsos/Reuters found a 1-point drop and YouGov found a 3-point drop.

Those aren’t huge shifts, but remember that the shutdown began with most Americans blaming Trump — that view is held among a near-majority now, on average.

For 200 years the American government worked the way the American Constitution said it should; Congress Legislates and overseas the Executive branch, the Executive branch executes according to the laws, and the Federal courts are arbiters of the laws and the Constitution. Then, about 200 years into the Republic, Republicans decided that they would introduce something new into the Federal governmental system, namely, the government shutdown. Whenever the Republican controlled Executive branch, or the Republican controlled Congress, decides that they want to get their way, but they don't have the votes in Congress or the will of President on their side, they hold the people of the United States hostage with a shutdown. An added complication is that this particular president may intentionally be harming the fabric of the United States, and of world trade, as a way of furthering the interests of a foreign power.

An intentional government shutdown should be declared Unconstitutional by the Courts, but the Republican controlled Supreme Court is not likely to do that, unless or until it is to the advantage of the Republican Party to do so. Interestingly, the writers of the Constitution never foresaw that there would evolve such a thing as political parties. I imagine that if they had, they would have written the Constitution differently.

Objection. Relevancy? Any relevancy, whether legal. (FRE 401)

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Simple question. What does the government shutdown have to do with wall funding?

Simple answer. Trump is holding a certain segment of the American public hostage in order to fulfill a carelessly thought out campaign promise fed to him as a mnemonic device by Roger Stone.

Idiotic.

You want to talk about border security? Fine. The Democrats approved a deal twice on that matter. One was shot down by Tea Party hardliners who couldn't stand allowing people who've lived their entire lives in the U.S. to continue to contribute positively to the country they love. The other was shot down by Trump after fearing disfavor from rightwing media pundits who make their living off sowing discord, and from creepy Stephen Goebbels Miller.

Democrats favor border security, but not a wasteful wall.

Democrats favor separating the issue of border security from government funding. Who wouldn't?

Trump is playing this as a politics, to his base, as usual. He's afraid of Mueller and SDNY, and he's afraid of 2020. And this egotistical moron has got the GOP by the nuts. Think about it. If there were a real crisis at the border, the GOP would have called it in the early 2000s when illegal border crossings were triple what they are now, when GW was president and the GOP largely held control of Congress. But they didn't. Why?

You know why.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Funny, none of these cowardly Democrats will talk to any angel parent or the families of murdered police officers and border patrol officers, why?

funny I was thinking the same thing about the Republicans whenver there is a mass shooting in the US, 2018 worst loss of life in schools on record, over 30000 gun deaths in the US

Some dehydrated, sick kid(s) will probably die as they reach the border only to put the blame on the US authorities.

When someone is under judicial custody, the authorities owe them and their dependents a duty of care because their ability to care for themselves or their dependenets has been stripped with their freedom once placed in detention, ehjchbis where those unfortunate children died.

Here's an argument for all those illegals and cartel members on how ineffectual a wall is - wonder if he said "Mark my words, mark my words.....

"Don’t give up. Don’t allow it to happen. If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it. Go over it. Go around it. But get to the other side of that wall," he continued.

From an area Hillary carried by 3 million votes. It's called a representative sample that any credible polling source would employ or face almost immediate exposure to the bias, which would kill their credibility.

Any adult with any high school education knows how to throw a poll. Yoinks.

BS - see one of the many other posts in this thread or others that show this to be absolutely false...

I did, but not liberal proved otherwise, so I think I’m bullseye spot on or show me where the Democrats have made significant improvements to the border, so much that it would be almost impossible for anyone to easily come in, that goes for any caravans or drugs.

Stop the irresponsible demonizing - didn't you say a few days ago to turn down the hate

And yet, I don’t hear anyone of the Democrats telling their lemmings to tone it down, why is that?

The northern border is much more porous and 41 individuals on the terror watch list tried entry thru there - why isn't Trump trying to get Canada to pay for a wall?

But that has nothing to do with the Mexican pourous border and illegals coming in from Honduras, El Salvador and Honduras? What about MS-13? What about the other cartels that come through the southern border cartels like Los Zetas, Gulf Cartel or the Sinaloa cartels are destroying everyday American lives, why is it Democrats don’t even flinch about this?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Trump was elected with the idea that building a border wall was good. Of course, everyone wants someone else to pay for stuff, except Starbucks-drinking, fairly wealthy, democratic-voting, Americans.

Americans with current family ties across the border don't want the wall either, which I don't understand. Parts of my family are California hispanics and they want illegal immigration slowed as much as possible. They know shutting it off completely isn't realistic. They live in central Cal, not SoCal.

Americans away from borders think it is terrible that someone can just walk across the US border, unstopped, at any time. They are unhappy when visitors overstay their visas without really good reasons like being hospitalized. Well over 50% of all illegal immigrants simply overstay their visas according to CBP reports.

This govt shutdown is a gift from Trump to everyone. Shortly, there will come a time when both houses of Congress decide they have to be adults and get a 2/3rds bill passed to get passed Trump. Every parent knows that you cannot negotiate with a 2 yr old having a tantrum. You put them down for a nap and let them cry to sleep. Bedtime Mr. President.

I did, but not liberal proved otherwise, so I think I’m bullseye spot on or show me where the Democrats have made significant improvements to the border, so much that it would be almost impossible for anyone to easily come in, that goes for any caravans or drugs.

Read and remember - I don't want to have to post it again...

*The U.S. Senate dealt a fatal blow on Thursday to President George W. Bush’s bipartisan overhaul of immigration policy. The bill tied tough border security and workplace enforcement measures to a plan to legalize an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, most from Latin America, and to create a temporary worker program sought by business groups. But the president was unable to overcome fierce opposition from fellow Republicans. *

bass: Who was polled? Which demographic and how many liberals, conservatives or Republicans or Democrats, Federal workers.

That's taken into account by the margin of error, part of which is determined by a weighted average to even out the different kinds of people polled. For example, they aren't expecting to perfectly match the % of black people polled to the % of black people in the US, so they account for that.

But, here it is anyway.

YouGov poll (±2.9%)

Who did you vote for in the election for President? Hillary Clinton: 29%, Donald Trump: 28%

Party Affiliation? Democrat: 30%, Republican 25%, Independent: 31%

Who do you blame? Trump/Republicans: 55%, Democrats: 32%

Reuters/Ipsos (±3.1%)

Who do you blame? Trump/Republicans: 58%, Democrats: 32%

2,203 adults, including 722 Republicans and 867 Democrats

Morning Consult (±2.0%)

Who did you vote for in the election for President? Hillary Clinton: 34%, Donald Trump: 37%

Who do you blame? Trump/Republicans: 52%, Democrats: 32% (registered voters only)

6 ( +6 / -0 )

bass: show me where the Democrats have made significant improvements to the border

Two bipartisan immigration bills. One even said the border will not be deemed "secure" until Republicans sign off on it, and at that point the Democrats start getting some of their concessions, but not before.

But we all know the crazy, radical fringe of the GOP killed that since it had the votes to pass.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Chuck and Nancy can’t stop the shutdown anytime they want. Just give Trump his wall which is 0.7% of the total budget.

They simply can’t allow Trump to have this “win” so they choose to make unpaid workers suffer instead.

If trump is a monster and an evil man who will never reopen the government don’t Chuck and Nancy have any obligation to save these people? Or are liberals cool with “the polls blame Trump” and plan to do nothing?

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Hey unpaid worker, we Dems could help you but can’t let Trump have a political win. So best of luck to you, polls say we can’t be blamed for our inaction.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

@super

What on earth are you talking about? Lol, talk about a veering off course.

Remember, the EC is the ONLY thing that counts, nothing else.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

They simply can’t allow Trump to have this “win” so they choose to make unpaid workers suffer instead.

The Democrats have passed legislation to open the other parts of government, but Trump and the GOP refuse to sign. They are holding the workers hostage.

Mind providing evidence of this alleged bloat and corruption? Naked assertions hold no water,

Alrighty.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

“the polls blame Trump” and plan to do nothing?

yes Trump plans to do nothing, the longer this goes on the worse its going to be, even if Trump does manage to declare a emergency, 5.6billion is a long way shy of his wall, will he continue to declare fake emergencies every time he needs more money and continue to skirt around the democratic process. Trump's going to set a precident that Republicans are going to squeal like piglets when the next Dem POTUS uses it against them.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Remember, the EC is the ONLY thing that counts, nothing else.

well then Republican can never use the phrase "the American people" voted for Trump as that would insinuate that most American support him, which is in fact wrong. And since the mid-terms show that the actual "American people" support the democrat party and Trump can no longer get everything he wants it seems the EC isnt the "ONLY thing that counts"

3 ( +4 / -1 )

So where are 30-40 Dem lawmakers this weekend when federal workers aren’t getting paid?

They are partying in Puerto Rico with lobbyist money and free food and entertainment, getting bought and paid for.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Uh, you asked what Dems did to strengthen borders and I showed you the bipartisan 2007

So what did Obama do? What happened the last 8 years, they could have done something, he with this mighty pen. If the Dems are for border security didn’t they do anything, why didn’t they block money from the sanctuary cities?

Again, why don't the Republicans do anything on the northern body where most terrorists are stopped?

We don’t have illegals from South America going through Canada, that goes for the cartels, drug smugglers and rapists as well as MS-13, so why won’t they take appropriate action and why are they all talk? First they say they are for border security and then they tell Trump they’re not. Kinda odd don’t you think?

Hey Mr ISIS terrorist, see how much I am helping you - I'm cutting and running in Syria so you can rebuild and am doing nothing on the northern border where you try to enter. I'm Donald "I love ISIS" Trump...

Don't worry, he’s going to leave a contingency force, something his predecessor didn’t do and then we have troops stationed in Iraq, so in a way, liberals should be happy because they hate wars and conflicts, Obama started the pullout and Trump is finishing it...with a a contingency force though.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

well then Republican can never use the phrase "the American people"

They can, referring to the people that brought him over the finish line.

California and NY don’t call elections. Look, get over it, the election is over and Trump one, nothing else matters.

voted for Trump as that would insinuate that most American support him, which is in fact wrong. And since the mid-terms show that the actual "American people" support the democrat party and Trump can no longer get everything he wants it seems the EC isnt the "ONLY thing that counts"

Actually, he can, now he can get more conservative justices through now that he has a bigger majority in the Senate. Also, the Democrats need to also play nice with the Republicans if they want to get their liberal moonbat agendas through. So yes, the people did speak.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It's just strange watching them create their own little worlds.

Blacklabel: So where are 30-40 Dem lawmakers this weekend when federal workers aren’t getting paid?

Well before leaving they did pass a series of bills to fund each agency individually. Trump and the GOP refused, then McConnell left. I'm not sure how logical it is for you to argue that Democrats are getting in the way of funding since they are the only ones who have voted for funding.

I also get the sense that you're trying to build some reality where it's the Dems fault for not leading and getting us out of this by.....overcoming Trump.

bass: They can, referring to the people that brought him over the finish line.

I think bass is actually going to try to argue that Trump can claim majority support after losing the popular vote. This should be fun.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The Dems could end this at anytime. The talking point about “the poor workers” is just a pathetic misdirection.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I think bass is actually going to try to argue that Trump can claim majority support after losing the popular vote. This should be fun.

No, I’m thinking more that the Dems were perfectly content with the EC before the election. So again, why are liberal policies so racist towards minorities and why do the Dems not care about Americans and the border? I really want to know why.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Elizabeth Warren is donating her salary, but not to the workers who aren’t getting paid. But instead to some activist refugee group.

ocasio-Cortez the socialist is taking her check, of course.

Dems don’t care, if they did they would take the loss and reopen the government.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

dems LOVED the electoral college. “No path to 270 for Trump!” they and the liberal media crowed. Until they lost. Again.

Reopen the government and learn to compromise with the man who won.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

So where are 30-40 Dem lawmakers this weekend when federal workers aren’t getting paid?

They are partying in Puerto Rico with lobbyist money and free food and entertainment, getting bought and paid for.

Why should they stop doing anything because Trump threw a hissy fit and shut down the government?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The Dems could end this at anytime.

The Dems aren't the ones with the responsibility to do so:

"If you say who gets fired, it always has to be the top. Problems start from the top, and they have to get solved from the top, and the president’s the leader, and he’s got to get everybody in a room, and he’s got to lead. And he doesn’t do that, he doesn’t like doing that, that’s not his strength."

"when they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time. They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head the Senate, who’s running things in Washington. So I really think the pressure is on the president."

“FACT – the reason why Americans have to worry about a government shutdown is because Obama refuses to pass a budget.”

Why are you people disagreeing with your Dear Leader? He was very clear that it is his fault - he even proudly took responsibility for it. Yet you people keep trying to say that the Democrats have something to do with it - the only people who have actually done their jobs and passed legislation.

You always go off about Yemen as if you have a position based on integrity, then you blame the shutdown on the party that doesn't have responsibility for it, in a show of hyper-partisanship. Hyper-partisanship is the inverse of integrity. You're going to have to dump your holier-than-thou attitude with Yemen stories if you're going to be taking illogical hyper-partisan stances in other stories.

"The Great Negotiator" -- turns out to be a FAILURE. You're fired!

They are partying in Puerto Rico with lobbyist money and free food and entertainment, getting bought and paid for.

oh you mean like all or Trumps golf trips paid for by the US taxpayer, Trump business gets paid $100000 by the US taxpayer for the secret service use of his golf carts to watch him play his taxpayer funded games of golf and his Mar Largo resort gets paid by the taxpayer for him to stay at his own resort.

Reopen the government and learn to compromise with the man who won.

why Republicans never wanted to comprimise when Obama won.

Dems don’t care, if they did they would take the loss and reopen the government.

why if Trump cared about the federal employees hed open the government so they can get paid, negotiate a wall deal separately, afterall his is a master negotiator.

The Dems could end this at anytime. The talking point about “the poor workers” is just a pathetic misdirection.

no the misdirection is claiming the border is a national secuiry issue , Trump could end it at any time and sign the funding legislation.

10000s thousands of people are killed in gun massacres / homocides every year in the US, maybe Trump should declare a national emergency and fund greater gun controls.

They can, referring to the people that brought him over the finish line.

the minority support of the American people who brought him over the finsih line. Majority support of the American people didnt win Trump the election , the EC did. there fixed that for you

why Republicans never wanted to comprimise when Obama won

Why would the GOP go with policies that they know will be disastrous for the nation? More and more entitlement programs, the GOP never wanted and part of it.

Democrats should agree to Trump"s $5 billion. When it passes the Senate and goes to the House the Dems should announce they won't sign unless they get $10 billion for one of their own projects.

Then Fizz and Black will be here blasting Trump for not letting people get back to work and bass would be screaming for him to compromise.

If he can get exactly what he wants and not a penny less before, then I agree, he should capitulate.

bass: Why would the GOP go with policies that they know will be disastrous for the nation? More and more entitlement programs, the GOP never wanted and part of it.

No one should enter politics with the mindset that they can't compromise. The Freedom Caucus idiots showed that with the amount of damage they did.

But we had a deal. The Senate passed it 100-0. Soon after something happened to Trump, most likely hearing criticism from Fox pundits, and he suddenly changed his mind and made another demand. He didn't offer anything else in return, just flat out made a demand, and he's put everyone in an impossible position. That's not negotiating skill, that's emotional amateur hour.

Now people are openly wondering if Trump declaring a national emergency is the only way out. The Democrats will sue and win, and at some point in the future Trump can chalk it up to some radical judge stopping his campaign promise. That's literally the win people are looking for to get out of this mess. All because of the "master negotiator."

So what did Obama do? What happened the last 8 years, they could have done something,

For the ten thousandth time, Obama deported more undocumented immigrants than any other president, slowed border crossings from south to north to the point they are dwarfed by north to south border crossings, and was ready to sign the two bipartisan bills that house republicans killed in 2013.

Why were republicans weak on immigration until they held the house, senate, and presidency and then were so ineffective? Can you say, "manufactured outrage"?

You posted a link to an article yesterday that showed border crossing from south to north have been increasing under Trump. Why is Trump so ineffective on border security compared to Obama?

The point at which Trump and his followers start attacking the justice system is as soon as they are handed a loss. The only time these people see any legitimacy in any of our institutions is when the institutions are sulimoly bending over for Trump. It's disgusting and corrosive to our democracy l, but Trump and his supporters lack the intelligence and emotional maturity to understand this.

ROFL! Smh. Unicornverse. LOL! Oh my . . . HAR!

Why would the DEMS go with policies that they know will be disastrous for the nation? More and more exploitation of the poor for the benefit of the rich and hate, the Dems don't want any part of it.

Hilarious that it's okay for republicans to obstruct but completely unreasonable for Dems to do so. Someone doesn't understand universality.
