Both Manchin and Sinema have argued that preserving the filibuster rules, requiring a 60-vote majority to pass most legislation, is important for fostering bipartisanship.

Come on. Republicans killed bipartisanship long ago. Pure disingenuousness from two senators on the take from big donors.

They also warn of what would happen if Republicans win back majority control

What will happen? They will pass some bills that are massively unpopular even with their own base. And they’ll be out on their rear ends next election. Call the GOP’s bluff. They know their platform doesn’t have popular support. That’s why they need the filibuster.

"to defend our democracy" - over and over and over, but it isn't about that at all. Read the John Lewis Bill - it is about a Federal takeover of state election laws. If that bill were to pass by some incredible miracle for the Democrats, it would immediately be challenged and end up in front of the Supreme Court that would easily find it in violation of Article 1, Section 4, clause 1 of the Constitution and the 10th Amendment. Schumer is all about protecting the filibuster until it became a pothole for this plan from Biden to give oversight of state's voting laws (and approval/denial of them) to the Federal government. This bill is going nowhere, the Dems know it’s a full on power grab and nothing more. As for Manchin and Sinema, they’re not stupid, they know this bill is full of crock and their constituents know it as well. These are the only 2 people in the Democrat party that care about the Constitution and bipartisanship.

it’s a full on power grab and nothing more

Making sure that voters have reasonable access to the polls is a power grab? Making sure that state legislatures don't overturn election results that are not in their favor is a power grab?

Yes! How many decades have republicans been trying to stop black voting rights?? None. How many decades did Democrats try to take away Black voting rights? From 1870 until at least 1965 - that's 9.5 decades. How many Democrats and other Whites were killed by Republicans for helping Blacks vote? None. How many Republicans and other Whites were killed by the Democrats (KKK) for helping Blacks to vote? 1,297 How many Blacks (or other so-called minorities have been prevented by any government (Democrat or Republican) from voting for at least the last 5 decades? Again, this bill is not going to pass, the Dems know this and at the end of the year when the parties change watch the Dems deeply embrace the filibuster, that’s when it will be important to keep and hold on to it.

perhaps you could be kind enough to tell us when Strom Thurmond became a Republican?

Probably the same time as Democrat Robert Byrd. Didn’t Biden oversee his eulogy?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

wow, almost word for word expected answer.

how about you finish the story about Sen Byrd, Bass?

I don’t need to, both men are gone part of history and from the past and both had nothing to do with this current bill that will sink in a ball of flames.

This whole problem shows what happens when politicians ignore what their constituents actually want in favor of what will make the politicians look good. Most Americans don't care about this (no matter their ethnicity). They care about inflation, jobs, the price of gas.

When the rhetoric heats up to the extent that it has, you know that side is the losing side. The Democrats are hyperventilating in a faux display of outrage- tells you that it's over. References to Jim Crow, Bull Connor, Jefferson Davis? Please.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Man, Biden must’ve made a deal with the devil that went like this: I’ll get you in there, but you ain’t gonna win much or accomplish anything.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

another defeat for Biden. He really does not have the mandate to make all these changes.

Obama and Clinton were at least personally possible and had enough support from the people to put pressure on others to get what they wanted. Biden has nothing, Stacy Abrams wont even be seen with him in person.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Georgia actually has more voter rights than New York or Delaware.

Easier mail in ballot approval, longer early voting period.

So its all hyperbole from the Democrats.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I didn't see anything in there about the proposed voting legislation by a Dem that requires a vaccine passport to vote. I'm sure that didn't go over well with the constichuency.

the issue is that the Republican Party of Nixon was the 1964 Southern Democrats. That is whole “Southern Strategy.” Attempting to link the Democratic Party of John Lewis and Elijah Cummings to the Dems of 1964 who held that record breaking filibuster is beyond dishonorable

Ok, so the Democrats tried at every given turn to stop the 1964 civil rights act to become law, so now how are their rights being jeopardized? No Democrat will give an answer, they know it’s crap, if the country were inherently racist a guy like Obama would have never become President. Again, you guys can have all the temper tantrum’s you want. Manchin and Sinema two Democrats are the ones and not the Republicans that are upholding the constitution and preventing the US to fall completely off the cliff of No return. When the GOP retake the House this year the Dems will be very happy they lost on this bill. They will need the filibuster and they know it. Those are the people holding it up, NOT the GOP.

It’s not going to pass.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

The Democrats used the supposedly "racist" filibuster just last week to block Russia sanctions.

Now they want to "carve out" exceptions so only the things they want dont have to get 60 votes.

Ummm what? so anything you want is unrestricted but everything else still is? based on what?

How would you even categorize the things that are exempt other than "Dem priority/non Dem priority"?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Yeah, the President comes to your state to give a speech about your signature issue for your racial identity and you have s “scheduling conflict”?

the President of the United States is less priority than anything else?

not buying it. Other groups actually boycotted Biden. Said less words more action. Ouch.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This lackluster performance by the President is really no surprise. He has never been, or had to be, a leader in his entire life. Spent a half century in Washington being 'good old Joe from Scranton', seen as nothing more than a lightweight nobody from a nowhere state. Modicum of notoriety for plagiarism back in the day. Undeserved reputation as a foreign policy expert, due purely to longevity in the Senate.

Now he has to navigate a party he doesn't recognize or remember, even from his days as VP. He is obviously confused by the infighting and factional warfare. His public speeches are not his own words, nor his own thoughts, nor his own positions. Almost feel sorry for the guy.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Yes some days I think “incompetence” other days I think “elder abuse”.

but to feel sorry for him now supports him staying in the role he obviously has no ability to perform. Allows unelected people in the background to continue to manipulate and pull strings.

I will feel sorry for the man himself once he is permanently back in his walled beach house.

Just another clear example that the former Republican Party is now the Anti-Democracy Party...

They have rejected free and fair elections for only one reason - they can't win them....

So they did everything they could to stage a coup in 2021 to nullify the will of the majority...and they continue that today with Red State laws restricting voting and taking the election certification process out of non-political election boards and giving it to partisan legislatures....

Subverting democracy and inciting violence - all because they can't convince a majority of the people to vote for them. Sound familiar?

The Myanmar Generals just did the same thing for the same reason...

Yeah. It's not about not having a "mandate," rather it's about having a GOP party which isn't interested in working with Democrats. This wasn't always the case. Unfortunately, though, Republicans seem to think only Republicans should be allowed to govern.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Yes some days I think “incompetence” other days I think “elder abuse”.

Indeed. I'd bet on Ivanka and Jared. I don't think Don Jr and Eric are smart enough to pull it off....

but to feel sorry for him now supports him staying in the role he obviously has no ability to perform. Allows unelected people in the background to continue to manipulate and pull strings.

No doubt, Putin pulled the strings for four years...and likely still does....

I will feel sorry for the man himself once he is permanently back in his walled beach house.

Yep, the indictment for tax and insurance fraud will be coming any day, then it's off to the walls of Rikers Island...

Ron DeSantis will be really celebrating then...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Yeah. It's not about not having a "mandate," rather it's about having a GOP party which isn't interested in working with Democrats.

They do want to work with the Democrats, the problem is the Democrats don’t want to compromise on anything, it’s either our way or no way and then the equate to not wanting to work with him in good faith or being obstructionists, or being racist, or being white supremacists or whatever you euphemism they can find to label the GOP.

This wasn't always the case.

Well, The Democrats weren’t hard left, they didn’t get crazy ideas a few years ago were outrageously progressive, they were still pretty much moderate, but Republicans are not going to say it was a party that just want to free-for-all, and want to subvert the rule of law, they don’t want the rest of the country to look like California or New York and it was good reason.

Unfortunately, though, Republicans seem to think only Republicans should be allowed to govern.

No, that would be the Democrats, they know exactly what they’re doing and they’re hoping that this will rally up and pull in their base, and so far it hasn’t, the only thing that it’s doing is sending the entire party over a cliff, just yesterday two more Democrats decided not to run for reelection, that brings a total of 28 Democrats not running going into November, and they think that the country will go for them getting rid of the filibuster, for the life of me I don’t know what’s in the head of these people.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Nope. Just look at Mitch McConnell and Obama. Mitch McConnell came right out and said, "my goal is to make sure Obama is a one term president." That is the GOP's goal. It's not about doing things to better the lives of Americans, no, it's about the accumulation of power for the sake of power.

he Democrats weren’t hard left, they didn’t get crazy ideas a few years ago were outrageously progressive, they were still pretty much moderate,

Lmao Trying to safe guard voting rights isn't hard left. Neither is providing healthcare to people. Or daycare for children.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Nope. Just look at Mitch McConnell and Obama. Mitch McConnell came right out and said, "my goal is to make sure Obama is a one term president."

But that is The game of politics, none of the Democrats want Trump to succeed, and please don’t say that they did it, they tried at every turn to oppose the former president, now why would The Republicans want Biden and his radical agenda to succeed? They don’t want that, the majority of the country now on the latest poll doesn’t want it and for the first time in 25 years the Republicans are favored to lead the country responsibly over the Democrats 47–40. This is a huge shift, and all the democrats are doing is making the whole bigger for themselves and making them as well as their policies more toxic, and becoming more abrasive to the voters, the Democrats are losing a lot of Hispanics and African-Americans the heart and soul the Democrat party, they keep this up, they never going to win again for the next foreseeable future.

That is the GOP's goal. It's not about doing things to better the lives of Americans,

Texas, Florida, Tennessee would beg to differ

Lmao Trying to safe guard voting rights isn't hard left.

Again, Obama became president of the United States, that was the greatest achievement and the greatest day for the United States, it showed the world that we had indeed overcome racism in the biggest way, and even though racism is still with us, it’s not impossible for people of color to attain and become anything that they want.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

You frequently make the same comment numerous times.

As do you and a lot of others

Because Obama was elected president twice does not mean America became less racist.

Definitely not more racist.

Many whites attacked him, including Trump who claimed he wasn't even American.

Well, without getting into it, that rumor never started under Trump so give that one a rest. For the record and I have always stated I never agreed with it, I never believed it, I think Trump should’ve never carried on with it, but it didn’t start with him.

And for the record Trump was attacked by a lot of minorities, does that make it right?

Trump continued with his Obama attacks during his single term.

Again, two wrongs don’t make a right and again if you’re going to dump on him for saying that, then please dump on the people that started it, be fair in your compensation, you knew how I felt, I never liked or agreed with it and thought it was toxic for Republicans to even touch it.

There are more than 700 billionaires but only 7 are Black Americans, so you could also make the claim all blacks could become billionaires.

Yes, they can as long as they work hard, Stay in school, become self-reliant and depend less on the government, I believe that they can, of course and that is another great thing about America

American racism is better than 50 years ago but for those who live it, daily it's still a major problem.

Understandable, But that’s not the America today.

Hopefully, one day America will become colour blind

Not just America. But America has come up long way compared to other countries that have a black population, definitely.

The left had a cute way of naming things they are not.

infra bill wasnt infra. Voting rights isn’t voting rights. Build back better isn’t better. Covid relief wasn’t for COVID. (They didn’t buy any tests)

then they disingenuously cry out how can Republicans be against these things?

biden changed and said it’s not who votes now it’s who counts the votes….counts the votes….counts the votes! So even he has abandoned this fake idea that there are people who can’t vote.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

it's about the accumulation of power for the sake of power.

Kinda like manipulating the system when you don’t have the votes to get what you want legitimately? Yes Dems are trying that right now. Eliminate filibuster for what we want but keep it for everything else. What’s that?

Dems told Schumer if they can’t change the election rules, they can’t win. So they can’t win in a fair election without COVID “adjustments”- that’s interesting to hear.
