Confuses me too. as the word gay isn’t even contained in the law and no one is talking about someone’s normal sized privately displayed pics on their desk.

Someone should look up poll taxes. Those racist laws never mentioned the word race, but they still clearly disenfranchised blacks. The same with this bill, you don't have to explicitly use the word "gay" to effectively silence gays, which is exactly the point of this bill

A long time they did, not as much these days, the nation has come a very long way.

The same with this bill, you don't have to explicitly use the word "gay" to effectively silence gays,

You are not silencing them, if they want to say what they are, they can. You will not be arrested or thrown in some basement for admitting you are gay. Now I do think they don’t want their schools to be like In many of the blue states and put a more heavily focus and emphasis on the gay agenda and it overriding heterosexual studies, makes perfect sense which should always come first and be in the forefront since the overwhelmingly majority of kids are heterosexual. I think this bill is pretty good and necessary.

-3 ( +8 / -11 )

But some worry it sets a tone that will leave LGBTQ teachers and kids feeling ostracized

No it won’t.

Nobody force fed me any lessons on sexual orientation whilst I was in school and I have never felt the need to discriminate against homosexuals etc

Kids should be worrying about their school work not their sexuality all the time.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

poll tax? 1964 called and wants their narrative back. that discriminated against ANY poor people, not just Blacks.

Well unless you think all or most Blacks are poor. then thats your racism shining through.

he same with this bill, you don't have to explicitly use the word "gay" to effectively silence gays, which is exactly the point of this bill

so why cant you just name the law correctly like poll tax was named correctly?

“one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway.”

Some people need something to be angry about, sometimes inventing then.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

hat Governors in both Texas and Florida are doing is a creative little game where they don’t do the oppressing themselves. They just build the framework for “everyday citizens” to do it for them.

which is not what is happening. but is what happened in blue states with COVID restrictions and mandates though.

I didnt send my kids to school to learn from their teacher about how "cool and edgy" it supposedly is to be gay.

Lol and rightists like DeSantis are fighting to bring back bigoted policies. You do understand Jim Crow laws targeted minorities, without explicitly stating so, right?

As Kurumazaka pointed out, this law is designed to harass gays, and others. You think people are going to talk about the being gay, if they risk being sued for it.? Of course not. No one is being fooled by DeSantis or any of the other authoritarians

3 ( +9 / -6 )

one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway.

if it was not covered anyway, then wouldnt be restricted from doing anything at all. and wouldnt be upset.

no need to worry about potential penalties for something you arent doing, right?

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

You think people are going to talk about the being gay, if they risk being sued for it.?

it is irrelevant to the educational process that a teacher is gay or not.

Why the need to openly proclaim their sexuality to 8 year olds? what part of mathematics does this cover?

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

it is irrelevant to the educational process that a teacher is gay or not.

Oh, but I thought you were just saying how this law doesn't mention gays? Now you're saying gay people shouldn't talk about being gay.

Why the need to openly proclaim their sexuality to 8 year olds?

Why should people have to hide being gay? Hmmm weird.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Now you're saying gay people shouldn't talk about being gay.

not to 8 years olds at school, no. what subject is this in elementary school?

Why should people have to hide being gay? Hmmm weird.

They dont have to hide anything about themselves. They just wont be allowed to "teach" or "promote" it.

But you know this.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

My teacher and my childrens teachers never spoke of their sexual orientation or political affiliation in the classroom. They didnt mention if they were married, divorced, churchgoers, atheists, smokers, drinkers, celibate, swingers.

Its all irrelevant to an educational process for small children.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

not to 8 years olds at school, no. what subject is this in elementary school?

Who said anything about 8 year olds? I'm glad we were able to establish the claim that this bill "doesn't mention gays" was nothing but a red herring.

They dont have to hide anything about themselves. They just wont be allowed to "teach" or "promote" it.

Lol how does one promote home sexuality? No one is fooled by anti-gat rightists.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Lol how does one promote home sexuality

do I really need to explain this to you?

number 1, by needlessly identifying yourself as homosexual in a setting that doesnt require it.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Who said anything about 8 year olds?

"bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade"

so 8 or 9 year olds.

I'm glad we were able to establish the claim that this bill "doesn't mention gays" was nothing but a red herring.

we have established no such thing. You just mad cause the law wont allow you to do something you want to do. Otherwise you wouldnt care. I dont care about laws that dont allow stealing because I dont steal, and have no intention of stealing.

so why do you care about a law that makes it illegal to do something you dont want to do?

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

The process of proving innocence can cause both financial and professional ruin.

oh so if someone were the subject of numerous witch hunt type investigations where they were assumed guilty but were actually innocent. that would be a problem for you now? Interesting....

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

When I was a kid, gay meant happy. I had a coloring book titled "The Big Gay Coloring Book for Boys". There was nothing homosexual about it, just a big book of outline picture for young boys to color in. Pictures of soldiers, firemen, cowboys and Indians.....

Oh wait...Now I see it, now I see it.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Its all irrelevant to an educational process for small children.

Well, fortunately “one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway”

Teachers are confused because the ‘law’ doesn’t actually explain anything clearly and those supposedly enforcing it also have no idea what it entails.

There are several examples of this cited in the article above.

But in the meantime a lot of easily riled up folks are riled up by their ‘imagination’ and desantis’ circus.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

You understand this concept Bass and Blacklabel?

Yes

What Governors in both Texas and Florida are doing is a creative little game where they don’t do the oppressing themselves. They just build the framework for “everyday citizens” to do it for them.

No, the people pushing the gay agenda as hard as they can to the forefront are the ones doing the oppressing

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

oh so if someone were the subject of numerous witch hunt type investigations where they were assumed guilty but were actually innocent. that would be a problem for you now? Interesting....

Lol no. Orientation is a protected class, being a crook isn't.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

“one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway”

then just dont start doing anything new that you werent already doing and you will be fine.

Werent doing it? well then dont start doing it now.

and if the person is not a teacher in early grades, it doesnt even apply to them.

Its pretty basic.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

we have established no such thing. You just mad cause the law wont allow you to do something you want to do. Otherwise you wouldnt care. I dont care about laws that dont allow stealing because I dont steal, and have no intention of stealing.

so why do you care about a law that makes it illegal to do something you dont want to do?

Exactly.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Readers, please don't become fixated on this story. Please make your point and then move on to other stories.

Werent doing it? well then dont start doing it now.

Nope. The right needs to explain why this law is necessary. It isn't. A bunch of anti-freedom bigots.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Excessive posts by some.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

They dont have to hide anything about themselves. They just wont be allowed to "teach" or "promote" it.

The problem with this law is its vagueness. Which is deliberate for two reasons. First, grade schools don’t even teach or promote this stuff, but the law insinuates that they do, riling up feeble-minded rightists. Just read some of the comments above claiming such. Second, the law is vague so that parents can interpret “teaching” or “promoting” however they want. This ends up putting enormous fear into LGBTQ teachers.

And that’s the point of the law.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

The new law, championed by Florida’s GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as material that is not deemed age-appropriate. Most educators do not expect a major change in lesson plans — one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway.

BINGO! This was DeSantis just playing and manipulating the MAGA-faithful...

It's pure MAGA-cancel culture - just like CRT...make up a fake issue, express outrage, and use it to get money and votes. And the MAGA-masses fall for it each time...

DeSantis has to be the happiest guy this week - his neighbor and rival at Mar-A-Lago just had his worst week...

4 ( +8 / -4 )

The actual title of the law is "Parental Rights in Education."

It wasn't even mentioned in this article.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Part of the law staes that it prohibites classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain grade levels or in a specified manner.

That's for the K-3 grade levels only.

Surely any normal human would agreed to that?

The children are there to learn about the three Rs, not what the teacher likes to do in their free time because it literally has nothing to do with the three Rs.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

If it were up to me, it would be K-12.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Now that the "Don't Say Gay" an "CRT" laws have been past, DeSantis is now working in his next faux issue to move the masses....

The J6B - Jan 6th Bill....it will permit only the "correct" version of Jan 6th to be taught in school - that it was a peaceful protest with no violence, involving mostly tourists, and a few FBI trained Antifa instigators.

In addition, a rider on this bill requires teachers to say only good things about red caps. Teachers caught saying disparaging things about red caps could lose their jobs and be fined...

Lastly, there's a clause that says in Florida it's legal to store classified up tp TS/SCI in your closet.

You know, back in the day I remember my teachers NEVER putting up posters of anything that they liked to do in their free time. Never. And I knew some of these teachers very well and personally as they were/are friends of my family.

These people were the epitome of what it means to be an educational professional. Their job was to educate the children in the subject they taught and that was it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Can't say that now.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Ron DeSantis has completely mismanaged the CoVid situation and other affairs in the state of Florida and as such, anything he enacts or signs should not be enforced. He is negligent, a derelict, and therefore his authority is nothing. Void. Oh, he's a lackey for the unAmerican traitor Trump too, that says enough right there.

The new law, championed by Florida’s GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade

Of course.

Who went to school in the Staes and were taught this stuff anyway, during those grades?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Surely, it is completely understandable to bar talk of sexualization to small children in the grades of K-3. Surely. Any rational person would agree with that.

As for me, it doesn't go far enough.

In an above comment that I made, I'd rather it go from K-12, but I can surely understand that when a young person's body is changing and they themselves start developing questions on THEIR OWN without outside influence, sure, absolutely go and investigate WITHOUT outside pressure especially from teacher-activists.

What should be done is have the school health services/counseling discuss the matter with the student AND parents present to come up with a solution for all involved.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Surely, it is completely understandable to bar talk of sexualization to small children in the grades of K-3. Surely.

That's not happening though, no one is trying to sexualize kids. This is another garbage talking point from a garbage political party, that doesn't have any real solutions for Americans so they just invent culture war nonsense.

This is just one example of so many one can find quite easily on youtube.

A principal in an elementary school pushing trans books to K-2 little kids.
