Well, OK, here's a link in case anyone does not believe the above post! http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/04/13/somalia.radio/

Some of those radio stations have come together and staged a protest by playing animal noises instead of the regular music, it has been reported.

thedeath: several websites are the reference for all Muslims. Good. OK. Got it.

Sounds so SIMILAR to the Baptists who banned dancing and drinking on Sundays, whether or not you believed in the sky God or not. I mean, really, St. Paul, decried party-going, so really, even in Fundy Christianland, the same proclamation would probably garner votes. God hates happiness you know.

TumbleDry, i think "Muchakucha" did explain it already above! some quick google also give me similar explanation from many muslim based site. that why i say what i said.

Somalia, so far away. We can just snicker at these people. Right?

Muslims in the West will also one day call for bans on music - and radios - when secular governments in those nations attempt to dissuade Muslim enclaves from building minarets to call the faithful to prayer. A ban is how they will counter the argument that the muezzin melody and call to prayer is unnecessary with the technology we have at our disposal.

thedeath: lol, see how lovely islam can be.

the problem is not Islam. It is the interpretation made by people.

If they came to Japan, what would these people ban?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Somalia has a tradition of music and most residents greeted the ban with dismay.

The Islamists frequently assassinate those who defy them or carry out Shariah-based punishments like amputating limbs.

lol, see how lovely islam can be. do they care if there will be minority non-muslim living there? let the peace lover answer that.

Wow, those guys are idiots...

neverknow2,

"Just because a point of view is different to yours, does not mean it is 'wrong'."

Having a different point of view isn't necessarily wrong. But forcing that point of view on others who don't share that viewpoint at the threat of violence or death most certainly is wrong.

I would expect most would be able to make that simple distinction before making such blanket "Diversity Makes the World Go 'Round" feel-good statements, as if banning things like a person's ability to listen to music, wear a bra, dance, interact with the opposite sex, appear in public as a woman without a male escort, or to worship (or not worship) were but quaint social quirks.

There has got to be a curbing in this islamic fundamentalism in this century. Come on islamic world, the christian world wouldn't let christian fundamentalists terrorize us all into their way of thinking. Rebel against this backward thinking before our big showdown with it comes.

No wonder it's so easy for them to find volunteers for "martyrdom". Everything even remotely enjoyable is prohibited, so heaven's got to seem like more fun.

Sorry, I got references to "backwards mohammedians" four or five links down. I saw "jihadwatch.com" and scrilled downwards...

Can't really say I want to argue with you, I've been clear enough on where I stand on Islam....

@The Question - it has to be frowned upon. Angry frowns.

What's their position on humming?

If it’s a simple choice between Islam and lead down the ears I’ll go for the lead down the ears any day. Far less painful.

For some people it's like the clock runs backwards....

@Madverts

The first link I see is one to a Sunni Muslim information site called "SunniPath. The Online Islamic Academy"

That site explains in great detail why music is Haram. Do you think that site is 'Islamophobic?'

"don't they know how many musicians like Cat Stevens, and Rappers are Muslims?"

Cat Stevens gave up music after converting, but obviously realized that was a crock so stopped being as "devout" and went back to it. Anybody taking any of the religious texts too seriously needs a physciatric evaluation IMO, though some of the Franco/Arab rappers really should take Mohammed's advice afterall in regards to their "music".

Nice buzzword from willi. Haram.

Heh, that quote about music supplied by Mucha in google gives the twenty or so first hits all from screaming anti-Islam blogs. It's like reading willi's JT posting history over and over again.

Heh, singing produces hypocrisy in the heart, right?

The Koran is different from the major religious own blubber in the sense that the texts are not modified in order to keep people believing their lies. Muslims somehow keep believing it without the modifications that has been necassary for the Church et al.

I've got nothing in people believing in a higher power through a lack of expalnation for their own existence.

don't they know how many musicians like Cat Stevens, and Rappers are Muslims?

@Madverts

Muhummad states: "Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance."

"On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress."

The Koran is supposed to be perfect and unchanging. So these Somali Islamists are just being good devout Muslims. That's not to say that Muslims don't enjoy music, it's just that their religion forbids it, or at the very least, strongly suggests that it's un-Islamic. This is just pure logic- no 'hate', no 'bigotry'. Islam needs to revise its holy texts to avoid this sort of thing. But it can't.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That is strictly within Koranic principles. Musik is haram.

Islam needs to start policing their own instead of quietly condoning extremism

Just because a point of view is different to yours, does not mean it is 'wrong'.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge I think you got a point there... seems anything not islamic is "un-islamic" ... guess I'm included in that list, darn.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"songs are un-Islamic"

Yeah, there's a lotta fun stuff that's un-Islamic.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Somalia wants to be unique,so let them be.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I really think an anti-Islam Extremist version of Radio Free America is called for here. I mean, reasonable muslims giving alternate views, leading prayers but also talking about world news, playing music, maybe giving a centrist point of view?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, from all the things they ban, you can see why these militant Islamists always seem so cranky. Most of the moderate Muslims I know are nice, fun loving people who enjoy things like music. These nutters, though, want to kill anyone for disagreeing with them.

The topic of freedom of speech has come up a lot on this site, so I'll be very disappointed if those who get upset at people wanting a right-wingers blasting hatred out a loudspeaker to quieten down don't jump on this topic with as much or more vigour.

Such a pity that they focus on all the repressive and narrow and dark parts of the Qu'ran. A bit anal, IMHO.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Heh, fun loving lot aren't they?

Beating and circumsising their woman and hanging out at the mosque won't have me converting to fundie Islam anytime soon......
