well you stop supplying arms and ammunition made in places like the us, russia and china, you stop providing financial support to military dictators and instead only offer support that cannot be turned into financial gain of the corrupt warlords. Sure keep the warships in there but make their mission to protect the soverign rights of the national interest of somalia. I bet there is alot of money exchanging hands between countries like china and the "government" of somalia that exchanges resources for arms and money for the corrupt leaders. basically if the leaders don't have money or guns how are they going repress the people who like all people everywhere generally have good intentions at heart.

The NUCLEAR WASTE part comes from italian mafia getting paid by european governments to take there nuclear waste off their hands then dump it offshore of somalia's coasts. Becasue there is no coastgaurd to stop them or arrest them they can easily get away with this, this is also why you see fishing trawlers from other countries getting hijacked cause they are probably stealing somali fish. These "Pirates" were originally just trying to protect their own families then the realised they could make money from the people stupid enough to sail in their territory. If you actually research the cause of the problem you'll see that these guys didn't have a lot of choice at first, but no, its too easy to just say yeah kill them all. And yeah the point was made that there are many other hostages being held so if they killed some of the pirates then perhaps the pirates would kill some of the other hostages they are holding. Well the Spanish were never ones for a good navy anyway with that Spanish Armada and all. They know when to cut their losses if even the Brits can beat them. But the Royal Navy has been losing it's influence ever since about 1776 or so. Maybe Spain could handle them these days but not Somali pirates. They are too unpolitically corrected.

By perpetuating the idea that pirates can get away with this garbage aren't they putting even more lives at risk? The pirates aren't in this for some grand crusade to bring attention to the problems in their home country, they are exploiting those problems to make a whole lot of money really fast.

Apparently they kind of are, the British won't send money, the U.S won't send money, and France has even gone so far as to place marines in civilian trawlers for protection.

By the way, that Al-Shabaab gets a large share of the piracy "income" is hardly a secret, seeing that they brag about it themselves.

I am surprised that no-one has put two and two together. The kidnappings in Yemen for ransom, and the hostage-taking at sea off Somalia. These two countries have a long intertwined history, and hostage-taking for ransom must be part of their culture. Very rarely do the hostages come to any harm, so that must be an unwritten rule. For this reason, the West is probably reluctant to start killing them as it may force their hand to retaliate in some unpleasant way, or drive the pirates closer to WilliB's Islamic fighters.

Congratulations pirates! Another successful mission, with plenty of money going to the jihad, and god willing there will be plenty more to come. The stupid kuffars just keep coughing it up.

Pirates always got away with many things throughout history. What would Spain's island of Majorca be nowadays without the pirates? Every building was financed by them.

Time to consider either mining all of Somalia's harbours or declaring unrestricted submarine warfare on everything that sails out from them.

Wow implosion I guess you sympathize with these poor pirates. Pity most of us don't. I agree with blowing them out of the water. We must sacrifice some hostages to teach them that taking hostages won't be profitable. It's like giving into a little kid all the time only spoiling them. I cant believe how simplistic people can be. One, foriegn governments cant just waltz into another countries waters and kill its civilians even if they are breaking the law, (apart from the USofA which does what it wants) imagine if china just sent troops into japan and started killing people for stealing chinese made bicycles! It's not up to another country to dictate what it sees as crimes punishable by death to another country. The fact that these crimes are happening at all is because the "western" world powers find it easier to use force than try to solve the problem at the root which is the corruption and anarchy in the countries economy and government. These "pirates" are trying to "capitalize" on the situation so if anyone who lives in a capitalist society thinks what they are doing is wrong maybe we need to stop setting the example! they only reason they do this is cause our contries go into their country which is now not protected by a coastgaurd or law enforcement and steal its resources i.e. fish (what the hell was a spanish Fishing trwler doing in somalia anyway?" and we allow the dumping of NUCLEAR WASTE slowly killing communites and more fish. I am glad most of our governments still have enough sense to restrain from outrightan illegal killing of these "pirates"

While I agree with the sentiment of using these pirates as a target for a live fire exercise (I would love to see a Phalanx System adapted for such a purpose), you have to remember that the pirates were not dumb enough to release all their hostages at the one time.

At the same time, however, I am rather taken by the idea of tracking the money, and then turning up with a helicopter load of special forces soldiers early one morning.

Finally, the attraction of money is that you have to be alive to be able to spend it. As such, perhaps the good guys are going about this the wrong way. Maybe they should seek vengeance in a couple of months time, once all the hostages have been released.

Obviously pirates have been common things around places like Philippines, to other small countries/islands ONLY best they could do was steal the ship & hope to get money for the rusting hulk in their hands to the products.

Mind you once pirates from Somalia started to attacking Western World ships the money was so easy to obtain & yes though they claim not to fork out money to said pirates it is being done through hidden means unknowen to the media.

Unless I miss my guess or forgot how to read for a moment I believe the artical stated, "The trawler had been seized Oct 2 with 16 Spaniards, eight Indonesians and 12 crew from five African countries on board."

And unless my math is horribly wrong I believe that 16+8+12 = 36 which, oh my, is the exact same number of hostages that were released. So my question stands, after the hostages were released why the heck didn't that Spanish Warship blow the snot out of the pirate boat?

This may seem like a dumb move, but governments have got to be at least thinking along these lines. At the very least they should have the offending vessels tagged somehow. It's not like a hostage movie where the bad guys escape into a crowded city...
