One of the mistakes that the outside world makes is to think that their enemies should be our enemies.

Nelson Mandela said it best, and very directly, when faced with the same sort of questions, by the same sort of people, about the same countries.

It has close ties with Moscow, a friend of the governing African National Congress when it was a liberation movement opposing white minority rule

Not just South Africa but many other countries in Africa and Asia were supported by the Soviet Union when they were fighting for their independence or had become newly independent.

That is not easily forgotten, and Russia enjoys widespread sympathy in the global South for that reason.
