Seems like a pretty stupid move with three years left to go to antagonize the nutters. I can only assume he was facing impeachment.

There is a close correlation between US satellites and martial law declarations, coups, one-party-rule etc. Hardly the first time by any measure here or elsewhere.

It's what they call the “rules-based-order”.

Instituting Martial Law due to a political impasse? President Yoon truly is a moron - he needs to be impeached and removed before he does any more damage - and the damage done to that country is already enormous. SK has been in a terrible way for a long time now.

Yoon will absolutely be spending his last days in a Korean prison, as is the tradition there for ex Presidents.

After Yoon's gone, the most anti-Japan president in Korean history swears in...

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will lift the martial law a few hours after he has declared it.

The difference is the dictatorship brigade is continually under martial law.

I was about to go to bed when Yoon declared a state of martial law. Utter lunacy, and a huge miscalculation on his part.... Was he hoping, that at the time that he did announce the martial law, that assembly members wouldn't of mobilised as quickly as they did? Was he hoping that Korean citizens wouldn't of mobilised outside the assembly building at such short notice on a very cold winter night? Well, they did and I have to commend those who acted quickly to preserve their freedoms.

Whaaaaaat ?

What has the US got to do with this?

I'm not well-informed about other "US satellites" declaring martial law. Please teach me master, but don't include the nut-job African countries that have a coup every decade

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will lift the martial law a few hours after he has declared

Yes, that was the title of the thread.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

I don't follow Korean politics, there is enough going on here and back in the US, but I did like the fact that Yoon tried to lower the temperature between Japan and Korea. I thought on that point he should be commended.

He screwed up,and he will pay the price of impeachment

Yes, that was the title of the thread.

No the title of the article is the parliament voted against martial law. A few hours later the president said he would lift martial law. Two different events,

South Korea is in turmoil.

the headline does not mention the president withdrawing martial law. He will be impeached and imprisoned.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

the headline does not mention the president withdrawing martial law.

South Korean “parliament” votes to defy president by lifting his declaration of martial law

That headline was kind of the indicator for us.

He will be impeached and imprisoned.

Well, that’s also obvious.

NJC, White European are not the model of Democracy and US voters elected Trump who tried to overturn a election through roiting in the Capital

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

The president's wife is also facing corruption charges.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The South Korean president may face "Impeachment". A temporary president will be needed until new elections are held.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is an old saying in South Korea: No happy ending for anyone being the president of South Korea !

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Well that was a bit of a bad decision.

I wonder did he hit the Soju too hard

If that's really what you think, then you need to open a dictionary and relearn the word "Democracy".

You might not like the outcome of the election, but that was a free and fair election and we should respect the results.

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law has sparked a heated debate about the domestic and international factors driving South Korea’s current political turmoil. While the immediate reasons cited by Yoon center on internal threats and accusations of anti-state activities by the opposition, a deeper look reveals a likely correlation with broader geopolitical dynamics.

Yoon’s presidency has been marked by significant strides in strengthening alliances with the U.S., Japan, and Australia—an alignment that challenges traditional regional power balances. His administration’s support for improving relations with Japan and its firm stance against North Korean provocations have disrupted decades of political norms in South Korea. Furthermore, South Korea’s vocal support for Ukraine in the global conflict against Russian aggression, coupled with reports of North Korea deploying troops to assist Russia, positions Yoon’s government in stark opposition to key regional players like China and North Korea.

Could these alliances and policies have made Yoon a target of coordinated efforts to destabilize his leadership? Critics argue that the opposition’s alleged anti-state activities might be linked to foreign propaganda campaigns aimed at weakening Yoon’s pro-Western stance. Social media and misinformation have emerged as tools for manipulation in similar scenarios globally, raising questions about their potential influence in South Korea’s current unrest.

While Yoon’s declaration of martial law was met with swift backlash and a parliamentary reversal, the situation underscores the challenges of navigating domestic stability in a geopolitically charged environment. If anything, the events in South Korea serve as a reminder of the intricate ties between internal politics and international alliances.

My take Is Yoon’s crisis a result of internal missteps, external influences, or both. Regardless the next president after Yoon could undermine all the progress of building relationships back with Japan and see more comfort woman issues and the like of predecessors.

Poor Mr. Yeol,

Must be painful to leave or give up the Crown, this is how DICTATERSHIP starts.

Get him out office before it's too late.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

All the people who got behind this guy lol

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Yoon appears to have attempted a military coup, dragging SK back to the Dark Ages of dictatorship. That was an unexpected and daft move. SK has developed beyond that sort of thing.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Not long ago S. Korea was one of the most oppressive nations in Asia, it sure looks like things hasn't change much since then except they are in Suits now.

The reminiscence of that era still haunts the S. Koreans till this day.

It shows how Democracy is CONSTANTLY under threat by the forces of EVILS.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

“I will eliminate anti-state forces as quickly as possible and normalize the country,” he said, while asking the people to believe in him and tolerate “some inconveniences.”

HOW SAD, we are in 2024 Mr. Yoon. may be he should just move across the border to north and join Kim.

NJC as member of the loyal opposition,I will do everything to legal undermine Trump illegal activities all you people want to contribute by giving to the ACLU,who has pacified Trump illegal activity in the past through court action Google ACLU Donate

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Apparently, democracy not going so well in SK, makes sense, smart voters can't be so easily fooled and don't like their Govt. corruption. Ditto USA, hence #47Trump!

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Another 'bad look' for weak democratic leadership so inter-connected with their $special interests rather than the needs of their citizenry.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Voters in SK and US are getting organized digitally, call it populism if you must, they are fed up with the $corruption!

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

One thing I admire about Korean democracy is how unlike Japan and the US for that matter they vigorously prosecute some chaebol oligarchs and their political lackeys. And are very effective at mobilizing the streets and labor in protest.

Inequality though has still grown in SK and the people are hungry for an economic populist.

Yoon needs to show his backside as quickly as possible.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Better run a 'clean' democracy in these highly educated countries, that's how northern Europe manage it so well.

SK Pol's can't continue the grift, it's high time for political integrity, Japan and US too!

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

This guy was the best friend of the current US administration.

Last time I’ve checked he was singing American Pie at a US state dinner with Joe Biden:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFi2zrcgYiY

I bet Army Generals in Washington are alarmed about the last order they placed in Seul for $6,2 billions of weapons. Will it be still valid?

https://www.reuters.com/world/us-state-dept-oks-potential-sale-f-15-aircraft-upgrade-to-south-korea-pentagon-2024-11-19/

The whole vicissitude shows the depth of American politics

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Very disturbing.

Democracy is fighting a running battle right now, and not just in S. Korea.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I was disappointed that the leadership of the South Korean military did not step up and say, Mr. President your order is illegal and we will not order troops to take over Parliament or any other illegal act. I have a much lower opinion of the Korean military now and am not sure the US should support them any more.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

He screwed up,and he will pay the price of impeachment

...and you know all the facts?

In SK, virtually all Chaebol execs, family has been in jail. virtually all politicians, their family from all parties has been investigated or sent to jail.

In a system where a politician or family member refusing gifts or benefit from wealthy donors is a mean to end their own political career, and chaebol refusing favours from politician is making them enemy of the political establishment.

It's not as black n white as people think. The only thing black n white is power elites design, run, and decide the fate of the game. Ordinary people are there to pay for it, regardless of outcome.

Hey where are all the JT regular posters who have praised Yoon over and over again?

Yoon is an obstinate fool so he will try to cling onto office as long as he can but the clock is ticking and he will be impeached and removed from office unless he gets the military to support him.

This crazy insane South Korean political chaos is Christmas come early for the genocidal despot dictatorships of North Korea, People's Republic of China.

Japan government, its people need to take notice, adopt a milltary stance that includes a comprehensive deterrence.

Korea whether North or South is politically unstable structurally, constantly in danger collapse.

No it isn't. This is typical Korean politics.

Hey where are all the JT regular posters…

They are trying to regroup. Need to hear from the Pentagon the official stance. You don’t want to mess with the US lobbies, check the Boeing stock after the potential sale to South Korea of F-15K aircrafts upgrade for $6,2 billions. That explains a lot about the role of Washington in the conflicts of Eastern Europe and Middle East

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Amateur.

He should have asked Marcos for advice.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

A spokesperson for the National Security Council said President Joe Biden’s administration was not notified in advance of the martial law announcement and was in contact with the South Korean government

Wow

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Marcos is certainly top of the list for next potential Asia martial law president. Like father, like son.

He should have asked Marcos for advice.
