This is sad tragic event, a human tragedy. Even if it's in China, which has an oppressive evil government.

Better late than never for this news. Thanks, JT.

A tragedy for our neighbours.

Tragic. May they all Rest In Peace.

bad news.

The plane stopped transmitting data 96 seconds after starting to fall.

This is suspicious. Data transmission can be manually shut off. Condolences to the families, and I hope they find the data recorders - those can't be shut off.

There isn’t such a thing like safe flying or safe airplanes. Humans are land animals and equipped only with capabilities at ground speeds at about walking speed, ranging from standing still to running speed. Everything else is outside of the limits and accompanied with the corresponding dangers for life. Swimming, going by ship, driving at higher speeds by car or train, flying by plane or sports devices…that’s maybe all very interesting and useful, but it contradicts with our biological layout completely and therefore with quite a probability brings the relating tragedies like body damages or death.

Truly terrifying if the passengers & crew were still conscious in the final seconds.

The video below looks 90 degrees straight down from perspective and, possibly. something like a wing separating form the plane. Other videos may show a steep angle before impact.

Noted with thanks.

Seeing how the crash went, I did not expect any survivors, but still absolutely tragic. Hopefully an investigation helps to correct this kind of thing from ever happening again.

Prayers for all on board and the families impacted by the loss of their loved ones.

Another tragic event with so many lives lost and sorry for anyone’s loss of family or injured friends. However, can’t fault @UK9393 for at least providing any immediate information from any source available when details were still scarce at 10:30pm last night. @rainyday can also attest details were extremely sketchy at the original 7:30pm news time causing some confusion throughout that thread.

At first, it sounded like a defective Boeing plane, but looking at that photo of the nose dive crash looked frighteningly deliberate. Maybe a crazy pilot, passenger or a terrorist. Anyway, possibly deliberate.

You're gonna lose it when you discover that the computer or smartphone you're posting on isn't naturally occurring.

The video circulating if genuine is very concerning. It looks like deliberate flight into terrain (not CFIT), ie suicide.

It stopped transmitting data because it hit the ground.

@zichi: Diving from that height and that speed, thankfully the passengers will have known little about it, as autopsies from previous such crashes have proven - they would have passed ouit LONG before impact. RIP.

Another Boeing 737

Another Boeing 737

I’m not sure what you mean, as the 737-800 has one of the safest track records of any modern airliner.

If you’re comparing this to the crashes of the 737 MAX, you’ll note the article itself states that the plane in question was NOT a 737 MAX and that Chinese airlines don’t fly that plane.

Another Boeing 737

More 737s have been produced than any other airliner in history. Consider that over 10,500 737s have been produced over the years compared to just 1,640 777s or 1550 747s. With the notable exception of the A320 family, fewer than 2,000 examples of every other airliner have ever been built. Even with the best safety record measures in mishaps per 10,000 flight horus, that many 737s gives it a higher likelihood of being in a mishap than any other airliner.

If you look at the statistics in the link below you see the Boeing 737-600/700/800/900 and the Boeing 747-400 have the lowest mishap rates of the group. Earlier model 737s also show a very low mishap rate. Also notice the 737-600/700/800/900 is the only series with over 100 million flight hours. For all 737 models the accumulated fight hours total 239 million. Lots of 737s flying lots of hours every day, the world's most popular airliner.

bad news.

That's what I said and meant. I don't care where it occurred, a tragedy is a tragedy. Period. I'm not taking this lightly in the least.

Must have been a horrific final moment for the passengers and crew.

The British Sun newspaper is scum and in my birth city, it hasn't been sold and bought since 1990 when they insulted the Liverpool fans over the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989.

I remember that 1989 incident and anybody who insults soccer fans over that has no class. Just like now. Anybody in the media who sasses off about the pilot, crew or passengers also have no class. My prayers and sympathies go to the victims and their surviving loved ones.

We won't know the cause for months. At this point, could be anything.

If you are flying domestically, a B73 is very likely to be used. All the records for that aircraft will be researched and reviewed. I don't know who China maintains that, but in the US we can see every flight a commercial airliner has made and all the maintenance records.

It is a little worrisome that the CCP told news reporters to leave. Makes it easier to cover up something if the people there to report aren't allowed, I suppose. I don't want them walking around the mountains, but being in local towns with the opportunity to ask the recovery team questions daily would go a long way to providing trust.

Has a passenger list been released yet?

I don't think it is that sinister. The police are trying to preserve the mishap scene for the investigators I presume. It won't like the situation where the airliner was shot down over Iran and people were at the crash scene picking through the wreckage possible disturbing evidence the investigators need.

Totally unnecessary comment @zichi
