I would rather have a refugee than a Republican of any income level as my next door neighbor.

The USA cannot even care for its own population of homeless, or properly care for senior citizens or the mentally ill. These Afghanis are in for a rude awakening when they discover that the American Dream is an outdated fantasy.

These armchair warriors had better keep their mouths shut about this. Taking in foreign personnel who helped our troops in their TV entertainment wars is the least we can do for them, for all they did. Just like the Somali and Vietnamese immigrants.

The American Dream is a lie for everyone. Still, these refugees will have a chance to make something for themselves. Contrary to popular myth, there are no free rides, not for refugees or immigrants. That's a Trumpian lie and we know he is unreliable.

Off to a fantastic start, measles outbreak and no jab for refugees.

Pretty safe prediction that red states will be prioritized to receive the multicultural blessing. Always keep an eye on demographics.

Yaaaaay it's the racist "great replacement" conspiracy theory!! Cool stuff, next tell us who the masterminds are and why you don't like their small hats!

And why shouldn’t they? They were the ones who b*tched the loudest about Biden ‘leaving our allies behind’. Time to pony up, buttercup.

Depends on what that "dream" is. Almost anyone who works hard can make a life better for their children in America than what they had elsewhere. It doesn't happen in a week, month, or even a year, but in a few years, if you are legally inside the USA, you work hard and aren't dumb with decisions, take advantage of educational opportunities, an immigrant and their family can do well. In 20 yrs, they won't be struggling anymore and their kids will be just as rude and entitled as typical American kids.

Almost every American has an immigration story. I'm 2nd generation. My grandparents were born elsewhere and fled that location when the govt there became nasty. Their parents and others in that community sent over a few 20-40 yr old men to begin creating new communities. Each year, a few more would go, join the existing community and help. then they had their families come, built schools, sent a few to advanced education - as a community. They kept speaking our native language even in the US, but also learned English. They were honest in their businesses and dealings with everyone.

The Afghans coming to America should follow that model as best they can.

Vietnamese have done it and thrived since the 1970s.

Japanese and Chinese have done it and thrived. There were some terrible setbacks for the Chinese who had federal laws put in their way.

Indians do it today. Europeans have done it and still do it today.

Legal immigrants are welcome. Both my neighbors are immigrant families - Ukrainian and Indian on either side. We are quite mixed in the 'burbs.

$1200 isn't much, especially in expensive locations which easily cost 50% more to live than AL or MS do. If their family can support them, that's a huge leg up.

Welcome to America.

Immigrants to the US often do a lot better than the native born. They come here hungry and work harder than most native born Americans so their kids can worry about going to university. Americans are too soft to pick lettuce, work as gardeners, handymen or wash cars. They leave the hard physical jobs to the immigrants while disparaging them for being foreign, then whine when the immigrant kids excel in school and leave their kids in the dust later in life.
