This most sad of countries, they don't deserve this piled on them.

I hope a lot of countries offer to help.

lots of countries have already offered help. Sadly, the truth of "help" is that the countries who "help" also profit immensely.

This is like the last thing Haiti needed. I've already made a contribution to the International Red Cross.

Scary stuff, wherever these things occur. My prayers and hopes go out to the Haitian people. Like Sarge, I'll try to make a contribution.

One positive benefit of the Internet age is that the world comes together to help people in times of crisis like this more rapidly than ever before. We saw that with the U.S. response from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Now we await the Japanese response.

The U.S. has responded, and now we await the France, Britain, Japan, China, Russia, and Italy responses.

The US is preparing to send cutting equipment and a disaster response team. Venezuela says it will send a 50-strong "humanitarian assistance team". The Red Cross is dispatching a relief team from Geneva and the UN's World Food Programme is flying in two planes with emergency food aid. The UK said it was mobilising help and was "ready to provide whatever humanitarian assistance may be required". Canada, Australia, France and a number of Latin American nations have also said they are mobilising their aid response.

I hope the people of Haiti get whatever help they need, from whoever is able to give it.

So sad. So sad!

Never build your "house" on a deck of cards. -Quality always. Many people want to take short-cuts, or cheapen themselves trying to find the shorter/easier path. A good life is a struggle for quality.

Overall, it's probably not as bad as as being reported. Hysteria sells copy. Anyway, in two weeks we'll have a better picture or a news blackout.

Scary ! ! ! There is no where to run or have time to hide during a 7.0 quake. It is even hard to stand up right during a 7.0 quake. My prayers go out to these people. It's scary

Badsey, are you also implying that diplomats, embassies, UN peacekeeping mission and the presidential palace and a major hotel etc all build on a deck of cards...? This was a powerful earthquake. Plus, very poor people don't usually have the luxury of choosing from the best materials.

Oh, and lunchmeat, in 2 weeks you may forget about it but others won't.

This is going to get a lot worse because their poor electrical, water and sewage systems are now totally out of commission. Disease, looting and fighting will be their next enemy. Sad sad thing to happen to such poor people.

First 72 hours are key. Unfortunately, in a major disaster like this, it often can take more then that to get supplies and equipment into place to be of help. The people who are still alive, buried underneath the collapsed buildings, might not survive long enough to be saved.

Shoddy buildings, no infrastructure, overcrowding... expect the death toll go to much higher.
