Well that's settled then... Sunak takes the top job.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Both are absolutely horrendous. Mordaunt was the better choice, but only if one has to choose between least bad options.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Polls show Truss would beat Sunak in the party members' contest.

As I said earlier.....

Many Conservative party members' will find something a little off putting about Mr. Sunak. They will say it is his policies but it's something else... Can you guess?

Liz truss looks like the cat that swallowed the canary and not to be trusted !

Trust Truss !

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

The Conservative Party members are mostly male, over 50, and white.

There's hypocrisy and cringe-inducing lying:

And there's comedy:

Liz Truss, the pound shop Thatcher. What a nightmare...

Mostly over 70

I wouldn’t make Liz Truss responsible for a single brand of cheese, let alone a whole country. A truly awful candidate. Dishonest, disingenuous, and a complete and utter charlatan.

comedy for masses.nothing else.

indian vs geographist.

same thing whoever will take take position.Albion is doomed .

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Less Trust being questioned about why she is cozying up to the Saudis and what exactly she said to them about human rights was cringeworthy and a complete shambles. She gets a thumbs up for putting full effort into avoiding answering questions - will make a great PM in that respect.

As for Rishi, a billionaire who spends tens of thousands of pounds a year just to keep his swimming pool warm, I doubt whether Winchester has prepared him to understand what it feels like to struggle to put food on the table. And is his family still raking in the millions doing business with Russia?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

With these last two remaining in the race to the bottom it looks like the Brits are well and truly "Trussed" (and oven-ready for another roasting if the Tories play their third "Queen of Hearts" card to hide their cruel austerity for the plebs program behind the soft image of a distaff candidate. The alternative of the country being led by the "artful dodgy banker" with his bag of tricks does not bode well for the welfare of the country, either, leaving a helpless nation to the tender mercies of a clapped-out right-wing political party of incompetent chancers.

Hey, you are describing the outgoing PM and he was in power for three years.

Many Conservative party members' will find something a little off putting about Mr. Sunak. They will say it is his policies but it's something else... Can you guess?

The ties he wears?

“All you Tories eat yourselves alive”

Nice, what’s a Tory?

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Who's Indian? Both Britain-born and bred.

Yes, they are. Some just like to stir the pot. Useless people.

Labour will be hoping the early polling of the Tory membership is correct and Truss will win this.

Less intelligent than Kier Starmer is no disgrace but less charismatic than him takes quite a bit of doing

what’s a Tory?

Google is useful not only for conspiracy theories, you know.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Sunak is British-born, Southampton I think, to Indian parents, and is a practicing Hindu. Even those born in the Commonwealth can become MP and PM.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The country is in dire straits. Some of it is because of nature, and some of it is because of this current government. John refused to close the borders when the covid started which led to an astronomical number of cases and deaths. The rising costs of energy and daily essentials.

These two will not make the radical changes needed.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

No, I can't. When the decision is made, the conservative party will be led by either a woman, or by someone from an ethnic minority. Neither of which the Labour party has yet managed to achieve in its leadership

True, although I did hear one member of the hysterical anti-woke mob claiming it was just virtue-signaling from the Tories.

It seems racists, crazed woke and anti-woke idiots are the ones fixated on race and gender though.

Wastes of space.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I saw an interview with Kemi Badenoch where she simply answered all of the interviewers questions and criticisms in a direct and straightforward manner - obviously she didn’t stand a chance in the leadership race. The remaining two are just career politicians and will have no chance of connecting with the so called “red wall” voters. The next election is Labour’s to lose - all they need to do is keep a lid on all the indulgent woke and radical stuff that turns off a large swathe of British voters outside of the capital.

countries increasingly closing on themselves with "controlled movements" of visitors, but still wanting to keep all the niceties (Brexit for the UK, cutting itself off from the EU (immigration) but still wanting the perks from the EU market

This could often depend on which Brexiteer you asked. Some saw the ‘perks’ as hindrances.

Some are still debating whether Brexit is actually ‘done’.

“All you Tories eat yourselves alive”

Nice, what’s a Tory?

Surprising that such a knowledgeable sort as yourself doesn't know. Canada has them. So did the USA for a while around the time of the War of Independence.

blueToday  09:38 am JST

a completely out-of-touch and arrogant (conservative) ruling class (Eton rulez!) and an inefficient opposition

Labour have at least managed to hold themselves together, unlike the continually fragmenting Japanese opposition parties, they generally manage to keep up with the Conservatives in the polls and perform respectably in elections, and people generally have a good idea of who their leader is as they go head-to-head with the Prime Minister every week, and Keir Starmer has invariably wiped the floor with Boris Johnson.

Hello Simon, I thought I’d ask it simply hoping to get a kind of a “gut” reaction instead of some copy/paste, or some talking point. In the States, there is very little difference between the two parties IMO. Not sure about UK politics.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

A British born Hindu as Prime Minister of the UK ?

Hmm...

We'll the Guatama Buddha was a Hindu so perhaps its possible.

After the last PM perhaps anything is possible.

As China and India are back on track to be the worlds strongest economies once again ,for the UK to have a British born of Indian descent PM might be an advantage diplomatically

It wasn't a very nuanced question though, was it. In general the Tories, or Conservatives lean right and favour low taxes, private enterprise and employer-friendly policies whereas Labour are historically left-wing and support more state control over public services. In practice though the ideologies blur a bit depending on what appears to be necessary or popular, e.g. Labour were calling for a windfall tax which the Conservatives opposed until they changed their minds and decided to introduce it.

Maybe a fantasy, but it occurred to me that Sunak has engineered this so he goes head to head with Truss. Although popular now with members, Truss will lose because she is fundamentally an idiot and the scrutiny she comes under in the next month will demonstrate what an electoral liability she would be. Sunak can't win on his own because of the non-dom thing with his missus, his green card, and most of all, because he's seen as having betrayed Johnson. He needs Truss as his opponent to make him look the less bad option. If Sunak beats Truss, he also temporarily defeats the ERG right wing nutjobs who have turned the Conservative Party into a mix of UKIP and the EDL. If Truss wins, the ERG would be even more powerful than they are now. For those not paying attention, it was the ERG who brought down May. Mourdant too had a weak standing and did not seem to have any clear policies, so she too would have been subject to ERG control. If Truss and the ERG beat Sunak, the Tory Party will implode, it'll be more of the same but without Johnson's jokiness to distract people, and Starmer will win in a landslide. Sunak may win and still face major problems with the ERG, because no amount of Brexit is ever enough for them and their next mission is to stop all net zero projects.

It does not appear things are going to get any more sensible in Great Britain anytime soon. Boris Johnson is going to be replaced as the Conservative Party Prime Minister by either a) a corrupt Indian with shady global finance connections or b) an incompetent Remain lunatic who does a convincing neocon impression.

137 Rishi Sunak

113 Liz Truss

105 Penny Mordaunt

Dominick Cummings clearly saw this coming, as he shared his thoughts on the leadership race, and the woman he dubbed The Human Hand grenade in particular, four days ago on his substack. Keep in mind that in spite of Sunak getting the most votes in every round, the early polls of the Tory MPs indicated that either Mordaunt or Truss would beat him in the final head-to-head competition. While those polls are not entirely reliable, one would have to say at this point that the highest probability outcome is that Britain will have a pro-EU globalist neocon warmonger at the helm before the autumn. Oh what fun, for every girl and boy...

I gave Truss the nickname ‘human hand grenade’ when she worked in the Department for Education. She said this week it was a ‘compliment’ because she gets things done. No. It was because she caused chaos and misery INSTEAD OF getting things done. Truss is the only minister I shouted at in No10. The reason was her compulsive pathological leaking. As soon as she left any meeting she would call people like Harry Cole (The Sun) and blurt out what had been said. This routinely caused chaos and often damaged the UK. I called her over to No10. I sat in that tiny little room near the Cabinet room next to the loos (G39). I said to her: what are you doing leaking everything, stop, focus on your real job where you’re failing to grip your department, focus on that… The eyes had a thousand yard stare. ‘What do you mean the real job?’ she said. It was pointless to go on. For her, leaking to the media was the ‘real’ job. And in many ways, inside the Simulation, it is the real job!

Boris is supporting Truss. Why? 1) He thinks it’s the best way to stop Sunak. 2) He knows Truss is mad as a box of snakes and is thinking, ‘there’s a chance she blows, there’s another contest and I can return’.

And with the human hand grenade, she may catastrophically escalate the war — remember she has defined the goal as pushing Russia out of Crimea, which if seriously attempted would be seen by the vast majority of Russians (including even anti-Putin Russians) as an attempt to destroy Russia and could lead to nuclear weapons.

Dominick Cummings, 16 July 2022

Truss is fully on-board with both the EU and the NATO Expansionists, which suggests that the chances of the NATO-Russian war going thermonuclear hot will rise if she is elected PM.

Buckle up.

"What I believe is that lowering taxes, opening up opportunities, is going to help us deliver the economic growth that Britain needs," she said. "And it's also going to help deliver us the next election."

Does that mean she will issue 50-years bonds to consolidate the COVID debt? Massive tax cuts make it difficult to pay off debt.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Oh dear. We have a post-war debt without any post-war to celebrate. I am surprised anyone wants to be PM.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Puffed up Lizzie thinks shes a tough nut.

I think she'll learn her lesson soon with both the EU and Russia.

The wannabe Thatcher is a joke.

What happened to the UK

Tory party are as bad as the republican party in the states.

Just beholden to big donors.

Crazy

with "great knowledge of geography" and how to ride tank :)

this is what Albion needs right now / irony off/

by my opinion that rich indian guy always better choice.

They had Neil Kinnock...

He's Welsh AND ginger!

a corrupt Indian

A corrupt Brit.

The fixation with his ethnicity is a bit suspicious.

Oh dear. We have a post-war debt without any post-war to celebrate. I am surprised anyone wants to be PM

I agree with the idea that to believe you are the right person to lead a country takes some degree of narcissism. The bigger problem is when you have little or nothing to justify such inflated confidence.

Liz Truss has far less than Sunak and I’m not a fan of Sunak at all.

Truss is not cut out for anything approaching this level.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Britain’s already had a couple of female Pm’s So give the guy with Indian heritage a chance—-he’s not going to be there very long anyway and it’ll make 1.4 billion Indian’s chests swell with pride that one of their own could become the British PM.It’ll bring happiness and pride to so many people.

Becoming UK PM is no big deal when a woman of half Indian ethnicity is already US VP. And most Indians don’t even like her that much.

The more relevant question for Indians is what is his stance on China. I hope UK desis don’t end up supporting Sunak because of his ethnicity and then face the heat from their relatives back home.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And is his family still raking in the millions doing business with Russia?

No Infosys generates more revenue from China than from Russia and has more significant business operations in China.

Though more than 60% of its revenue still comes from North America.

Sunak, Truss ready for battle to be Britain's next PM:

Well, some predicted months ago that Great Britain could be run by a South Asian descendant.

It does seem so, as wealthy Sunak is gathering momentum to march into No: 10.

Fortune changes, British, once the colonial master, may become a serf..

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Thanks Simon. Sounds like a one party system like the states that keep the folks divided over tax and services meanwhile running up huge amounts of never payable debt. Are there any parties that are anti-war or anti NATO?

invalid CSRF

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Ethnicity/gender is a red herring,

Truss and Sunak so called preposterous Thatcherite platform/comparisons are ludicrous

Thatchers closed minded mindset influenced by Friedrich Hayek/Milton Friedman blinkered brand of free-market economic philosophy would and should never be associated with 21st century global gradualism and flexibility in the conduct of monetary policy.

Thatchers poisonous monetarism, brutally controlling the money supply along a policy of high interest rates to kerb inflation led to the devastation of UK manufacturing industry and mass unemployment.

Thatcherisn hollowed out UK, the very heart and soul of communities at the alter of individual self achievement.

So Truss and Sunak propose to revisit a industrial relations policy that is sclerotic and dysfunctional.

UK is heading into a summer of industrial discontent.

Fuelled by inflation, a continued covid pandemic, and cost of living crisis.

If either of these candidates believe that the medicine is a jolly good dose of Thatcherisn three times a day, well be prepared for rioting in the streets.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Are there any parties that are anti-war or anti NATO?

No major parties, probably because it's an extremely unpopular opinion that guarantees you never get elected.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Truss and Sunak, in fact all the candidates held office that afforded/granted them the ability to innovate polices that could have relieved the burden for families trapped in poverty,

Sunak....

"We need to restore trust, rebuild the economy, and reunite our country"

Truss.....

"What I believe is that lowering taxes, opening up opportunities, is going to help us deliver the economic growth that Britain needs," she said. "And it's also going to help deliver us the next election."

In the years both have been in Government why haven't either come close to fulfilling these pledges?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The Tories have been in power for 12 years, and the current situation is the best that they can do?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Nihon Tora....

The next election is Labour’s to lose - all they need to do is keep a lid on all the indulgent woke and radical stuff that turns off a large swathe of British voters outside of the capital.

But they won't...They can't....

But Britain is already guaranteed to get either its first prime minister of color or its third woman leader.

And its third PM in 6 years...

3 PMs in 6 years is nothing compared to the history of Prime Ministers in office.

The record number of PM in the shortest time was back in 1834.

There was 4 PMs in one year.of different parties.

From https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prime_ministers_of_the_United_Kingdom

Sir Robert Peel 1834 – 1835 Conservative

Duke of Wellington 1834 Tory

Viscount Melbourne 1834 Whig

Earl Grey 1830 – 1834 Whig

In a space of 2 years from 1922 to 1924 the was a total of 5 different PMs of different parties.

Stanley Baldwin 1924 – 1929 Conservative

Ramsay MacDonald 1924 Labour

Stanley Baldwin 1923 – 1924 Conservative

Andrew Bonar Law 1922 – 1923 Conservative

David Lloyd George 1916 – 1922 Liberal

Today Rishi Sunak claimed to be the 'Thatcherite' option for next PM.

Thatcher left office over 30 years ago!

The mass unemployment through monetarism were funded with the revenue from north sea oil.

Great Britain does not have that energy revenue to fall back on.

This pandemic has ended the pretence of economic globalization, the reliance on global supply chains.

Climate change has nullified just in time manufacturing/modelling, where motorways are mobile warehouses.

Sunak back to the future, is no more than yesterday political wet dreams.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Massive tax cuts make it difficult to pay off debt.

oh? massive government spending makes it difficult to pay off debt, if you ask me.

Tax rate cuts in practice often don’t result in lower tax revenues. But higher tax revenues often don’t result in lower debt, because politicians in democratic countries promise to spend more of other people’s money in order to get themselves re-elected.

Thatcher had a great quote about socialism I think being fantastic, until one runs out of other peoples money.

JFK has a notable quote about the tax revenues point, noting a paradoxical truth that a best way to boost tax revenues in the long run is to cut tax rates now.

Sunak seems very flaky from what I have read, and Truss seems to lack charisma but at least she seems to understand Thatcher better than Sunak.
