I find it too simplistic to condemn Aung San Suu Kyi for ignoring violence against the Rohingyas.

I think ignoring genocide is bad. But that's just me.

I find it too simplistic to condemn Aung San Suu Kyi for ignoring violence against the Rohingyas.

Considering the history of Myanmar is noted for defending itself against Chinese military campaigns ([1277–1287] and [1765–1769]) and Muslim illegal settlements over the centuries, together with the on-going military rule and struggle for democracy, it is a political dilemma for Aung San Suu Kyi – as the leader of the NLD – to speak out about the Rohingya crisis while this action would be easily misunderstood as unpatriotic.

As for Suu Kyi, her about-face has been heartbreaking. We’re seeing a similar situation with Nobel Peace laureate Abiy Ahmed in Ethiopia. It takes guts to oppose authoritarianism from outside the system. It takes an altogether different level of guts to change it once you have the chance.

Well said. She is certainly no Vaclav Havel.

Then she tried her hand at ethnic cleansing and all of a sudden it was crickets.

The "crickets" on the left have loudly and publicly condemned her for the barbarities she enables. I am one of her old supporters but not now. She is in the same league as Xi Jinping as far as I am concerned.

Congratulation to Suu-chan. This is a small but a significant step toward a civilian government.

Uh, it hasn’t been crickets. Many of the people who praised her in the past have come out against her actions towards the Rohingya. Just because you haven’t bothered to look for criticism emanating from the left doesn’t mean it’s not happening. It just means you’re being willfully ignorant.

The recent big victory of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) is a turning point for the struggle for democracy in Myanmar. Through forming a government on its own, the NLD could further strengthen the democratic rule further under the next government. By then, to be able to rewrite the current military constitution, the NLD really needs some right-minded generals crossing the floor.

The military regime there was never a "benign dictatorship" in any one's viewpoint, other than their own.

A human rights abuser? A coward? A puppet? A practical politician?

I am unaware of anything forcing her to remain in her position or making resignation impossible. If I were in her position, I would have resigned long ago.

Then she tried her hand at ethnic cleansing and all of a sudden it was crickets.

Literally the first comment on this article was condemning her. It was mine. I think that, if you read through my comments, my leftist credentials will speak for themselves. If you do go through my past comments, I cannot recommend my jokes with the same confidence.

Me too. It is amazing to see the power of the corporate media again. The propaganda portraing the islamist terrorism in South Burma as some sort of crime against the poor hapless Rohinga (which most people never read up) has certainly been working.

Could you post links for us to find out what’s really happening?

Thanks in advance.

I'm old enough to remember when she was the big hero of the Left. "Strong independent woman", human rights champion, woman 'of color', Nobel peace prize, the rest of it.

As a figurehead for the army, I don’t think there is any alternative.

I read an article arguing something similar. I’m not making excuses for her but it seems very difficult to know how much power she has.

"She went from being one of the world's most inspirational icons for democracy and freedom to a genocide-enabling fool.

She did win the elections 'democratically'. If democracy leads to pandering to the racists who may be in a majority then I would prefer a benign dictatorship over 'freedom and democracy' any day.

Disappointing. Suu-kyi's treatment of the Rohingya minority in her country has been an international disgrace. She went from being one of the world's most inspirational icons for democracy and freedom to a genocide-enabling fool. Appalling.
