Its a bigger picture than just the drought, there hasn't been increase in water catchment areas for Sydney or New South Wales for decades, then add on the population growth this was bound to happen - at least the previously unused desalination plant is getting a work out.

I saw a documentary recently showing how intensive farming has diverted more and more water away from the dwindling rivers.

I recently saw a documentary about desalination plants in Australia and Isreal.
Their output was still relatively small but they are working hard to increase it and they are gradually building more of these plants to combat the global drought phenomenon.
